Doug Boxell Head Coach Doug Boxell, the winner of five High School state championships in Texas, begins his first season as the head men’s basketball coach at Ozarks.

Boxell spent the last 13 years as the head boy’s basketball coach at Ponder High School where he won three state championships, including back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009. 12 of his 13 teams won district titles there. Boxell also served as the

school’s athletic director the past five years.

His extensive Texas coaching experience spans nearly 25 years, including two other stops that resulted in state championships. Prior to Ponder, Boxell spent two seasons at Sudan High School, and led the Hornets to a state title in 1995. His first head coaching stint was at Santo High School, where he spent five years and won the state title in 1990. He also had stops at Lampasas High School, Neches High School and Alpine High School. He owns an impressive 670-175 (.792) career record.

“Ozarks is a great university where student-athletes can receive a solid educa-tion and develop friendships that will last a lifetime,” said Boxell. This university will not only prepare you for your profession, but also for the game of life.”

Boxell will emphasize fundamentals, sound defense and team play.

“Our focus will be on developing a team that is like a family. We want play-ers that understand how to make their teammates better players. We want a program that prepares to win. Players must first learn how to set goals, stay focused, work hard and be diligent in order to be successful.”

During his career, 23 of his teams have made the playoffs, with 17 of those winning district championships. He guided 16 of his teams to the regional tournament and seven made state tournament appearances. He was the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) Coach of the Year twice and District Coach of the Year 14 times. He was named the Denton Record Chronicle and Fort Worth Star-Telegram Coach of the Year three times. In 1990, he was the head coach of the TABC All-Star game.

Boxell received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from University of North Texas in 1980. He has a master’s degree in Physical Education from Sam Houston State University.

Boxell and his wife, Jeananne, are the parents of four sons.

Luke HammondAssistant Coach Luke Hammond begins his third season as the assistant men’s basketball coach. A native of Yorktown, Va., Hammond played at Averett University in Danville, Va., for three years. He was team captain his junior season. He was a student assistant at Averett during the 2006-2007 season, helping the Cougars earn a spot in the NCAA III tournament for the first time in 17

years. Hammond’s summer camp experience includes working with the Prep All-Stars Camp in Nashville, Tenn., Blacksburg, Va. and Charlotte, N.C. Hammond graduated from York High School (Va.) and received Second Team All-Conference honors his senior season. He is a 2007 graduate of Averett University where he majored in Physical Education.

Boxell brings an impressive resume that includes five state championships collected in Texas High School basketball. With only one returning starter, 70 percent of the scoring gone, and six returning lettermen, Boxell faces the chal-lenge of rebuilding in his first season as a college coach. And that starts with an enormous recruiting class totaling 20 newcomers. “We need to find the right 12-14 guys that can help us,” said Boxell. “It may not always be the most talented kids, but rather those that work together and listen. It may be a kid that isn’t a good offensive player but is a good rebounder. It might be a good teammate. We are trying to get the kids to understand how to become a good team. I want them to see the whole picture.” The cupboard is not empty for Boxell as he inherits four players with signifi-cant playing experience.

Junior guard Andre Williams headlines the returning group with 45 career starts under his belt. The 6-foot-4 Williams is among the top three-point shooters in the American Southwest Conference. He is the top scoring threat back from last season after averaging 9.2 points per game. Williams hit 44-of-143 (30%) from the three-point line, while nailing 84 percent of his free throw attempts. “Andre is a real smooth player,” said Boxell. “I am real impressed with how he handles the ball, and his shot selection is good.”

Sophomores Colby Woolverton, Blake Mitchem and Jerard McGinty return after productive freshman campaigns. Woolverton, a 5-foot-11 guard, was named to the ASC All-East Division Freshman Team after scoring 6.6 points per game

and hitting nearly 40 percent of his three-pointers. Mitchem, a 6-foot-6 forward, is expected to play a greater role for Ozarks in the post area. Mitchem averaged 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds. McGinty, a 6-foot-3 guard, proved to be an outside threat, shooting 34 percent from beyond the arc.

“Colby is used to being a three-point shooter,” said Boxell. “But I think his role has grown to even more. I am real encour-aged about Blake’s scoring ability, especially around the basket. And, he listens and wants to get better. He has a lot of natural ability and he will continue to get better. I hope we can make Jerard could have a good year for us. He just needs to learn how to attack the basket a little better.” Boxell expects several newcomers to contribute immedi-ately. Among those are transfer Josh Odom and freshmen

Tyandre Freeman, Mark Perez, Isaiah Boxell, Clayton Crouch and Jessie Raglin. Odom, a 6-foot-4 left-handed guard, was at Eastfield Junior College last season and has shown explosive scoring ability. “Josh has great quickness off the dribble and in his first step,” said Boxell. “He sees the floor real well. He is a great scorer and a good slasher. He is a real asset to this team. Tyandre is a man inside. He is probably one of the best on-side ball post players we have. He gives us great strength and size. Mark has a

chance to do a good job for us. He brings a lot of energy and Isaiah does a good job of getting the ball to the open man. He is not flashy, but brings stability on the perimeter. Clayton can shoot the ball well and Jessie displays energy on the defensive end and he can shoot the three. It is just a matter of developing these kids and having them settle down and play within the framework of the team and use their strengths.”

Offensively, the Eagles will adapt to its personnel in the game, according to Boxell. “We will adjust our offense as to what personnel we have in the game,” said Boxell. “We will ask them to play to their strengths. We don’t need a certain group of kids that fit into a system, they just need to understand how to play as a team. We need to run our offense to get points every time down the floor. We have to be a good passing team and we have to share the ball and understand what good shot selection is.”

Boxell was well-known for his High School squads playing team basketball, something he wants to continue at the collegiate level. “Just because a player hits two three-pointers doesn’t mean it improves the team because they may not be able to do that every night,” said Boxell. “I want them to understand how to make our team better every night. We want them to get as much satisfaction out of making a good pass to help the team. We want to be able to score points because we have done a good job moving the ball and we have put ourselves in position to score points. We want the kids to be excited about playing on the defensive end, not just on the offensive end.”

The defense must be improved in order for the Eagles to be successful. Ozarks gave up nearly 76 points per game a year ago.

“We will play a half court man-to-man defense,” said Boxell. “We want to put pressure on the ball while everyone else will be playing the gap and trying to control penetration. We have to play good team defense and we have to have all five guys blocking out. If we don’t block out as a team, our defense is nullified because the other team will be getting

layups. We have to be physical enough for our freshmen kids to stop senior kids. If we fall on the floor we need to get right back up.” The Eagles have been among the smaller teams in the ASC the last few seasons, but Boxell has added size to the team with Ben Martin, a 6-foot-8 sophomore, Nate Miller, a 6-foot-7 sophomore transfer, and Shawn Curtis, a 6-foot-4 freshman. “Ben is a smart player,” said Boxell. “He is good on the defensive end. He gets himself in good position. He understands the game. Nate is a real hard worker in practice and works hard in the weight room. Shawn is the type of kid that when he gets the ball I trust him. He makes good sound decisions.” Despite a young nucleus of players and the transition to a new coach, the Eagles still figure to be in the mix for a playoff spot, something the program hasn’t done in three seasons. “Our goal is to make the conference tournament,” said Boxell. “And if you get good enough to make the conference tournament, I think the ceiling is the limit and I think you can go as far as you want to go. Right now we are probably not good enough to get there, but I think if we keep working we have enough mate-rial where we could get there. I think it is a realistic goal to make the conference tournament.” The schedule includes 11 home games and 14 games on the road. The Ea-gles open the season against Hendrix College in Conway November 15. Ozarks will then take on NCAA II UA-Fort Smith November 17 in Fort Smith.

Boxell Re-Energizes Basketball Program

New University of the Ozarks Head Men’s Basketball Coach Doug Boxell has re-energized the program in just a short time, but he will need to find some quick fixes in order to continue a

championship caliber team after four starters graduated.

2009-2010 Men’s Basketball Media Guide - 17

Eagles Top Nationally Ranked Opponent The Eagles defeated nationally ranked UT-Dallas, 68-66, January 20 on the road. Senior guard Tony Brock sank a pair of three throws with 18 seconds left to help the Eagles pull off the upset of the No. 20 Comets. With the Eagles up 64-63 and 3:48 remaining, the Comets answered with a jumper to go up one point a minute later. The Comets then forced a turnover on Ozarks next possession, but the Eagles returned the favor when Chris Williams stole the ball and converted it into a layup. After exchanging shots, the Comets again turned the ball over and fouled Brock with 18 ticks on the clock. Brock, who went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the game, calmly hit the game-winners. Williams played a major part in the upset, scoring a game-high 23 points. Brock ended with 12 points. Big Man With A TouchAt 6-foot-4 and 225-pounds Chris Williams was among the strongest forwards in the American Southwest Conference. Using his athletic ability and strength, Williams led the ASC in rebounding (8.6). However, Williams was much more than an inside power player. He often displayed an impressive outside touch, especially from the three-point line. He ended his senior campaign leading the league in three-point percentage (48%). He hit 31-of-64 from the arc. He nailed four against both UT-Tyler and Louisiana College. Within the ASC, he finished seventh in scoring (15.5) and eighth in steals (1.7). He led the team in scoring ten times and in rebounding 14 times. He posted ten double-doubles and had 20 or more points five times. Against Texas Lutheran University January 10, Williams scored 27 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and recorded three steals in 31 minutes of action. He reached double figures in scoring in all but four games. He earned ASC All-East Division Second Team and was ASC Player of the Week once last season.

The 6-foot-4 native of San Antonio enters his junior season with 79 career three-pointers. Williams has hit 79-of-243 for a 32.5% career per-centage. He made five against Schreiner University his freshman campaign, and then hit five more on two more occasions last year. Last season, Williams was eighth in the ASC in three-point fields goals per game (1.8). He hit at least two three’s in 12 different games. He finished the season scoring 9.2 points per game. Williams was a member of the ASC All-East Division Freshman Team.

Brock Cracks Record BookPoint guard Tony Brock moved into Ozarks’ career top-10 list in assists following a productive senior season. In 2008-2009, Brock totaled a career-high 128 assists for an average of 5.1 per game, second-highest in the American Southwest Confer-ence. He finished with five or more assists 14 times and topped out with 10 against Sul Ross State. He had 8 or more six times during the 2008-2009 season. He led the team 18 times in that category. American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, will celebrate its 14th championship season of competition with the 2009-2010 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 15 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states — Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi — the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2009-2010 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler, and Texas Lutheran University. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.

For 175 years, University of the Ozarks has ap-proached education with an unyielding search for truth.

That search led our founders to establish the first co-educational college west of the Mis-sissippi. It set the stage for the first Arkansas woman to receive a college degree. And be-cause truth often defies convention, ours was the first historically white college in the state to admit African-Americans.

Every day, our history inspires Ozarks students to discover their own individual truths. But we won’t expect you to find the answers alone. Through every step of your search, we’ll stand by you as true scholars, mentors, and friends.

Founded in 1834 as Cane Hill School, University of the Ozarks is a private, four-year comprehen-sive university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Located on 30 acres in Clarksville, Arkansas (pop. 7,500), Ozarks is home to about 675 students from 22 states and 20 countries.

More than 80 percent of our faculty hold the highest degrees in their fields. Because we’re small by design, our average class size is 14 and the student/ faculty ratio is 13:1.

More than 60 majors, minors, and preprofes- sional degrees, from Composite Science to Stra-tegic Communications are offered. Many Ozarks graduates also go on to top graduate programs

in law, medicine, and engineering.

The central mall of campus is flanked by historic Munger Chapel and Walker Hall, a $7 million facility that houses a television studio, radio station, and state-of-the art editing suites. The 38,000-square-foot Robson Library houses more than 175,000 items for reading and research.

Seventy-five percent of students live on campus in one of six residence halls that feature such perks as recreation rooms and in-room com-puter connections.

At roughly half the national average for a pri-vate, liberal arts education, University of the Ozarks’ tuition offers exceptional value. About 95 percent of students receive some type of financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work study. Over $7.7 million in financial aid is distributed annually. You may have heard that a liberal arts educa-tion is all about mental agility, intellectual prowess, service to others, and critical thinking. We couldn’t agree more. But at Ozarks, we’re also steeped in the tradition of preparedness – for your career, for graduate school, for life. A key part of being prepared is knowing when to ask for help. Ozarks’ Student Support Services (SSS) provides free tutoring, a 24-hour com-puter lab, resume assistance, career and grad school strategies, and more than a dozen

other services to help students achieve their very best.

Internships are an essential part of the college experience, allowing you to practice newfound skills “in the field” and try a career (or two) on for size. Ozarks interns are doing research in polymer chemistry, working with the forest service, and volunteering for national political campaigns. Just how much can one student get involved? One Ozarks student landed internships at both the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. and the FOX News Network in Manhattan and created films for Little Rock’s “48 Hour Film Festival” as well as the Cinequest Film Festival.

Once Ozarks graduates get out into the world, there’s no stopping them. Our alumni pursue a truly incredible array of careers, from writing for ad agencies and practicing clinical psychology to working for the Secret Service. And if you’re interested in furthering your education, expect to be in good company. More than 85 percent of Ozarks students who apply are accepted to top graduate, medical, and law schools. If you’re not accustomed to personal interaction with your instructors, you’ll get used to it soon enough. Both in and out of class, Ozarks faculty demand accountability (don’t be surprised if you get a phone call from your professor when you miss class). That sort of “personal attention” is just one example of our genuine concern for each individual student’s progress.

THE UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS

Page 33: University of the Ozarks 2009-10 Men's Basketball Media Guide

Our faculty is known for inspiring remarkable acts. With their help, students are studying abroad in Strasburg, Florence, and Hong Kong. They’re learning about new forms of interna-tional currency trading from experts in the field, and using their Latin skills to enhance research papers on medieval drama. If this sounds more like master’s work than under-graduate, it’s no accident. Because University of the Ozarks is small by design, professors have the time to delve deeply into every student’s interests – and help make the most of their talents. In the political science pro-gram, Dr. Gil Parks’ students are researching national human rights legislation at American University in D.C. and taking on internships with the National Republican Senatorial Com-mittee. They’re also attending law schools nationwide, including Notre Dame, Pepperdine, and Georgetown. Similarly, Dr. Sean Coleman encourages his pre-med students to take full advantage of the liberal arts, with foreign language minors, and immersion trips to coun-tries like Mexico and Italy. With over 40 clubs and organizations to choose from, it isn’t hard to find one you’re truly passionate about. For some, it’s a club with academic affiliations like Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) – a global, non-profit organization that helps members

develop leadership, teamwork, and communica-tion skills by championing free enterprise and community service. Others pursue more per-sonal passions by joining Amnesty International, College Republicans, or Young Democrats. And if you’re simply looking to have fun, you won’t be disappointed. In the student center, ping-pong matches have been known to go on for hours, and you never know when a soccer game might break out in the quad. Movie nights often hit the big screens in the residence halls, where camaraderie and community come together. At Ozarks, serious sports fans have a lot to cheer about. As a member of NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference, our teams square off against competitors from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Our teams make the playoffs and our student-athletes consistently earn All-America and All-Conference honors. Our Eagles compete academically, too. They regularly appear on ASC all-academic rosters and are recognized for high marks by national organizations. Fans packed the house for home basketball games a charm-ing Mabee Gymnasium. The student section is well-known by opposing teams as vocal and energetic, giving the Eagles a true home court advantage.
