The IISERs were set up with theprimary goal to integrate high quality research with undergraduate teaching to improvescience education in India and to enhance the number and quality of future researchers ofthe country. The PhD program at IISER Pune is a blend of research, classroom curriculum and mentoringunder-graduate students. Research scholars are expected to complete at least 16 credits ofcourse work within the first two semesters followed by a comprehensive examination toassess the student’s candidacy for PhD. Our pedagogy is research-based and inquiry-oriented. There is a strong emphasis on using the current primary literature in the classroom.This ensures a continually updated content, and trains students to read, understand, andcritically evaluate the primary scientific literature.
