Research assessment in the UKResearch assessment in the UKResearch Assessment Exercises have been going in UK since 1986 – the main purpose being to distribute public money on the basis of research excellence.

The last exercise (RAE2008) determined the distribution of a third of research income in UK > £1.5 billion.

It also affects reputation and league tables … so the two main things a researcher is motivated by .. money to do research and reputation.
