Correspondence (1900–1960) relating to Henry Simpson Johnston’s political and legal careers, and to his affiliation with various fraternal organizations; legal papers (1909–1934) documenting court cases with which Johnston was involved; speeches and other papers (1914–1930) relating to his political campaigns; and printed material and newspaper clippings (1920–1960) collected by Johnston. __________________ Collection description: This collection contains a wide variety of papers accumulated by Henry S. Johnston. The dates of the papers range from the early 1900s to the late 1950s. During these years, Johnston practiced law and from 1927-1929 acted as the Governor of Oklahoma. A large portion of these papers concern legal cases that he handled including several boxes pertaining to railroad companies. Other boxes deal with cases involving divorce, education, Indian oil, telephone companies and financial affairs. Several boxes in the collection contain papers concerning the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch. The collection contains several boxes of general correspondence and some personal correspondence with family members and friends. However, most of the correspondence is with various publishing companies, political parties sand other organizations including the Knights of Pythias, the Masons, and the Ku Klux Klan. Some files contain pamphlets documenting the positions of these organizations on various issues. The collection also highlights Johnston's political campaigns in 1908, 1914, 1920, 1928, and 1930 with both political correspondence and pamphlets. Correspondence and other papers dealing with campaigns include bills and receipts, Johnston's speeches, newspaper clippings and other materials. Campaign correspondence is generally arranged by year of the campaign and by county. Johnston, Rules of the State Senate, state debts, individual federal income tax and Oklahoma sales tax. The boxes are arranged in chronological order or alphabetical order depending on the subject matter. For example, campaign correspondence is filed by county, and legal cases are arranged by date.
