new mexico game notesScouting MinnesotaMinnesota is coming off of a 111-91 victory over Detroit Mercy on Sat-urday to snap a three-loss streak to Georgia, North Carolina and Florida State. Despite the losses, the squad is averaging 80.9 points and 46.9 rebounds per game.

The team is led by Carlie Wagner who averages 21.6 points per game. In addition to Wagner, the Golden Gophers have two more scorers averag-ing in double digits including sophomore Kenisha Bell (17.3) and fresh-man Gadiva Hubbard (14.6).

Beynon BlowoutIn the Lobos’ last contest vs. SMU at home on Saturday, junior Cherise Beynon racked up an outstanding 32 points. Her 32 points ranks her fourth all-time in UNM history for points in a single game. The last time a Lobos scored 30 points was on Dec. 15, 2002 when Jordan Adams scored 30 vs. Memphis.

The Lobo Big DThe Lobos have boasted strong defensive numbers so far this season, holding regular-season opponents to an average of 34.9 percent shoot-ing from the floor. In addition, UNM opponents have shot just 28.0 per-cent behind the three-point arc. Not only can the Lobos stop the shot, UNM is also out-rebounding its opponents 48.7-43.9, a +4.9 rebounding margin.

It’s all about the reboundA key focus of Coach Bradbury’s offense is the ability to get the re-bound, and it’s clear why. UNM is 0-3 this season when they are out-re-bounded by their opponent. Conversely, the Lobos are 3-1 when they secure the most boards. So far this season, UNM has pulled in over 50 rebounds in three of its seven games - 57 vs. FDU, NMSU (11/15) and Tulsa.

The Mountain west stack upWhile UNM’s current eighth-place spot in the Mountain West rankings may look less than ideal, the Lobos are right on target when it comes to the defensive stats. The Lobos rank first in the conference in defensive rebounds with 35.0 per game. They are followed by UNLV with 29.7. In addition, UNM is ranked second in defensive field goal percentage in allowing opponents to shoot just 34.9 percent.

Lobo lead trendsThe Lobos have led at the half in six of their seven games this season but have had trouble closing for the victory until Saturday’s game vs. SMU. UNM is now 3-3 when leading at halftime and 3-1 when leading after the third quarter.

Van der keijl’s big ImpactSenior Richelle van der Keijl is averaging a team-high 15.7 points per game and 10.9 rebounds per contest in her first season as a Lobo. She also leads the team in shooting percentage, 64.8. In five of her last sev-en games, van der Keijl has registered double figures including 20-, 19-, 21-, 15- and 21- point games, respectively.

Double-figure lobosFive Lobos are averaging in double figures heading into Tuesday’s game including Richelle van der Keijl (15.7), Cherise Beynon (13.9), Alex Lap-eyrolerie (11.6), Jaisa Nunn (10.9) and Mykiel Burleson (10.6).

Record for beynon Junior Cherise Beynon tied the all-time New Mexico record for assists in a single game with 15 on Nov. 15 against NM State. Beynon tied former Lobo play-er - and current Lobo administrator - Janice Ruggiero (Branch) who set the record on Jan. 23, 1987 against Adams State.

Regular 20s The Lobos have had at least one player rack up 20 points in six of their first seven games of the 2016-17 season. In the season opener vs. Fairleigh Dickinson, it was Richelle van der Keijl (20) and Alex Lapeyrol-erie (21), in the second game against NM State it was Lapeyrolerie (22), in the Lobos’ outing at Texas Tech it was Mykiel Burleson (22), van der Keijl did it again against Tulsa on Nov. 25 (21). Despite a four-game slump, two more Lobos tallied double figures against NMSU on Nov. 30: Beynon (22) and van der Keijl (21) before Beynon scored 32 on Dec. 3 vs. SMU.

ABOUT THE 2016-17 LOBOS The 2016-17 edition of the New Mexico women’sbasketball team is going to have a much different look as the Lobos are under new direction with new head coach Mike Bradbury. The Lobos will show off a new style of play, speeding the game up with the dribble drive and shooting those outside threes.

The Lobos return seven lettermen from last year’s squad including First Team All-Mountain West selec-tion Cherise Beynon and All-Freshman Team selection Jaisa Nunn. The Lobos will add in six new faces, in-cluding three freshmen and three transfers (only one transfer will play this season).

Preseason Mountain West honorsJunior Cherise Beynon was named to the 2016-17 Mountain West Preseason All-Conference Team fol-lowing her stellar sophomore campaign while fresh-man Mykiel Burleson was named Mountain West Preseason Freshman of the Year. As a team, the Lobos were selected to finish sixth in the league.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOMETwo years ago, “The Pit” went underconstruction with the name of the arena. It is still identified as “The Pit” but has a few more letters added to it, as the name of the arena is now WisePies Arena aka The Pit. “The Pit” is nationally recognized as one of the top basket-ball venues. Need more evidence? How about Sports Illustrated ranking it as one of the top 20 sporting venues, of any sport, in the world for the 20th centu-ry. The Pit is truly a special place, and it has created an unparalleled environment for the New Mexico women’s basketball program. The Lobos have led the Mountain West in attendance every year of the con-ference’s existence since the 1999-00 season. During that same span, the program has ranked in the top 20 nationally in attendance in each of those years.

Student-athlete spiritAcademic excellence has become the norm for the New Mexico women’s basketball. The Lobos are reg-ularly taking home Mountain West Academic all-con-ference and Scholar-Athlete awards, but they shine in national academic rankings as well. For six of the last eight seasons, and eight of the last 11 seasons, UNM has finished in the WBCA’s Academic Top 25 rankings.

Lobos from near and farThe Lobo women’s basketball roster has a mixture of athletes from near and far on its 2016-17 roster. The Lobos have players from nine different states and one from another country. The Lobos are combined with players from Texas, Florida, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Washington. The Lobos have one player from overseas in senior trans-fer Richelle van der Kiejl from The Netherlands.

TWITTER

“Mike is one of the top up and coming young coaches in the country. He’s a proven winner with a tremendous work ethic. There is no question in my mind that he will build a championship program at New Mexico.” -- Ohio State women’s basketball head coach Kevin McGuff. “Mike has an innate ability to develop chemistry on his teams. Recruiting and strategy are critical to success in every program, but finding the right students that allow for tremendous chemistry on a team make the differ-ence between good and great. The Lobos better be ready to play well into March for the foreseeable future under Mike’s leadership.” – Morehead State Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson

“New Mexico has made an outstanding hire in Mike Bradbury. Mike is a tireless recruiter with a great reputa-tion, not only for his ability to recruit, but also his ability to develop and coach players. He is going to play an exciting and entertaining style of basketball that will allow them to be successful and their fans will love. I have no doubt that Mike will work extremely hard, not only coaching his players, but in the community of Albuquer-que, as they have one of the best fan bases in all of women’s basketball.” – Louisville women’s basketball head coach Jeff Walz
