UMD hos launched its 26th year of service to the citizens of Minnesota with o record number of new academic programs.

Anew tv.-· veor School of Medicine, dedicated to training fOIT!ily p[;ysic ;o11s for non-metropolita, areas, opened in September with o cl ass of 24 students. After spending two years at UMD, the students will transfer to the Twin Cities campus to comp I ete their degree requirements.

The School of Social Work, which will grad-uate social planners for rural and regional posi-tions, began operation August 28. Students wi 11 spend from one to two years, depending on their previous training and experience, earning o Mos-ter of Social Work degree. The first cl ass hos 23 students.

A two-year Dental Hygiene Program began cl asses in September with 16 students. The pro-gram seeks to meet the needs of state dentists for auxiliary personnel to handle such duties as examining and charting, toking x-roys, cleaiing teeth, decoy control treatment and patient edu-cation.

The complete raige of courses fur the new Moster of Arts degree in speech pathology first offered in the foll. The program provides graduates with a body of knowledge as it applies to the clinical setting, clinical practicum and research.

education at UMD, one wh ich i s designed to pro-duce a more professional t eacher.

Another new program is the two-year Associ-ate in Vocational Teacher Education degree in-tended to produce teachers for vocation al and technical schools. Studen ts with previous ski II s experience or training con rece ive credit toward the degree and, if they choo se, con continue study toward a four year degree.

Overall, UMD now offers 14 Master ' s degree programs, four boccol oureate degrees, and two ossoci ate degrees. Courses ore offered for 50 ma jor fields in 32 academic areas, 15 pre-profes-sional programs and Air Force ROTC.

Arrangements hove been made for student exchanges with both the College of St. Scholos-t ico and the University of Wisconsin, Superior so that students con toke advantage of unique of-ferings at neighboring campuses.

New thrusts in undergraduate programs in-clude internship s in urban studies, envi ronmental research, low enforcement and allowing high school students to toke UMD courses during their senior year. The new Indian Studies Program and the greater attention being given to oil minority and di sodvontoged students reflect new directions at UMD for service and education.

Students, th emselves, ore becoming increas-ingly involved both in the community and on cam-pus with such prograns as the Human Resources Bonk for volunteer work in the city and regi on, the Student Tutorial Program, the free Univer-city, and the Students' College.

"During the next quarter century, UMD wi 11 continue to strive to provide the best possible education for the students of Northeastern Minne-sota and the state as o whole," Provost Raymond W. Dorl and states. "It is our hope that we con continue to be responsive to the changing needs of both our students ond the community so that the quality of our lives con be enhanced even further. 11

Ralph Romano Athletic Director

UMD Athleti c Director Ralph Romano, eye-ing excellence and sportsmanship in UMD' s 11-sport program, is in his fourth year as the head of tbe deportment.

A native of Thunderbay, Ontario, Romano moved to Duluth while in high school. He gradu-ated from Duluth· Central and continued his education at UMD. While at UMD, he was a goalie with the Bulldog's h'bci<ey squad.

Following graduation in 1956 he served as a navigator in the Air Force. Romano returned to his alma mater in 1959 a s head hockey coach and sports public i!y d irector. He soon took on the responsibilit ies of a thletic ticket manager and athletic 'bus iness manager as well as continuing the coaching . He relinquished his coaching job in 1967 while accepting a position as UMD assistant athletic director .

The retirement of Lloyd Pe terson, a long time servant of UMD athlet ics, vacated the UMD athletic director's seat and Romano was the logical cand idate for the job.

Among his most significan t contributions to UMD was Romano's determ ined efforts in gain-ing entrance into the renowned Western Col-legiate Hockey Association , cons idered the NHL of college hockey.

Romano and his wife Barb are the parents of five children : Ralph Jr., Elaine , Kevin , Jeff, and Paul.

Athletic Department Bruce McLeod, a former UMD hockey coptoi n,

is the backbone behind the athletic deportment's business ond publicity, doubling as the business manager and sports publicity director.

A native of Fort Fronces, Ont. , McLeod grad-uated from UMD in 1969. He completed his hockey career as one of the Bulldogs' al I-time leading scorers.

McLeod handles the difficult financial deal-ings of the athletic deportment and is in constont correspondence with the news media ond other colleges.

McLeod is assisted with press releases, brochures, programs and press box work by Tom Knutson, a senior physical education student at the university.

The secretori al chores of the deportment ore handled by Kathy Erickson and Pot Bjorklond.

James Mal asky Hea d Coach

Jim Malesky MIAC Coach of the Year in 1970 is in his 15th season as the head mentor of UMD' s footbol I team

With a career record at UMD of 73-47-7 Mal -o sky has the best won- lo st percentage of UMD' s three all-time coaches . He led the Bulldogs to MIAC championships in 1960 and 196 l , and nar-rowly missed a conference title lost year when the underdog Bulldogs tumbled to Gustavus Adol-phus in the lost league gomeof the year to decide the championship

Malasky earned his reputation as a winning coach at Edina-Morningside High School and Morris High School. His 1956 Morris team won its conference championship and in 1957 Mal-o sky's Edin a Hornets were considered the number one high school team in the state ofter sweeping through the season undefeated .

Overall Malo sky's hi gh school coaching creditentiols read 27 vi ctories and just eight losses .

Malo sky is a native of Crosby , Minn. and he was a standout football and basketball player at Crosby- Ironton High School . He was selected to the All -State teams in both sports.

Highly recruited by colleges across the no-tion Malesky elected to attend the University of Minnesota where he become Bernie Bierman' s quarterback on the great Gopher teams of the I ate 1940' s,

Prospects

When assessing the forthcoming strengths and weaknesses of the UMD football team, Cooch Molosky is quick to point out that the Bulldogs hove suffered 12 lettermen losses, "all of whom were v~y impo rtant to our success I ost year.''

Howev~, Malasky doesn't hide the fact that there are two critical positions to be filled.

Probably the most serious loss to the S(f.Jod is Johnny 01 son, simply because of his versatil-ity. 01 son was the Bulldog 's leading halfback , o key defensive backfield player and one of the best punt~s in small college football.

His loss is coupled with the departure of the Bulldog's other halfback , co-captain Pete Furo . And to make the backfield o real Cf.Jestion mark for 1972 the second "critical" vacancy to be fi I led is at quarterback , where I ost year's co-coptoi n John Zupetz performed so wel I.

"Defensively we expect to be strong , " Mal-asky said. "We hove virtually everybody bock and we hove strong contenders for the few posi-tions where th~e ore openings .

" But on offense, we're 1ust hoping at this stage of the game. It's tough to lose your veteran halfbacks and (f.Jorterbock all at the some time."

Junior Eric Kaiser will undoubtedly man the fullback 106 where he was the Bulldog's leading rusher lost season. However, Molosky said the rest of the backfield is open.

Steve Skildum, captain-elect for 1972, will be o key performer as o guard on offense and o linebock~ on defense.
