time: one semester. instructor: rosalyne shieh. place: TCAUP. THE SEMESTER BEGAN WITH A SERIES OF CASE STUDIES. I WAS GIVEN THE SENDAI MEDIATHEQUE IN SENDAI, JAPAN. WE BEGAN THROUGH AN EXERCISE OF MODEL-MAKING. THROUGH THESE EXPLORATIONS, I BEGAN TO STUDY THE IDEA OF CORES AND HOW THEY COULD BE A MAIN STRUCTURE TO THE BUILDING. FROM THERE, I BEGAN TO EXPLORE THE PROGRAM WITHIN THE CORES BEING SUSPENDED ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE CORES. THEN, I BEGAN TO THINK OF THE CORES AS HARD, CONCRETE STRUCTURES, WHICH WOULD HOUSE PROGRAMS NOT FOCUSED ON THE EXTERIOR VIEWS OF THE CITY. THESE CORES WOULD HOLD UP THE REST OF THE STRUCTURE, WHICH WAS ENTIRELY EXPOSED TO THE CITY. SLEEPING BECAME A PUBLIC ACT, WHILE GOING TO THE BATHROOM/SHOWERING WAS HIDDEN IN THE CORE, BLOCKED BY THE CONCRETE STRUCTURE. MY FINAL BUILDING BECAME ABOUT SIX SOLID CORES THAT SUSPEND THE STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING THROUGH SPANS, AS THE BUILDING DISINTEGRATED FROM THE TOP-DOWN, ON THE EXTERIOR AND ON THE INTERIOR, INCLUDING LIGHT WELLS IN THE MIDDLE, BUT BEING DUG OUT UPWARD RATHER THAN THE TYPICAL DOWNWARD WELL. ARTIFICIAL LIGHT WOULD BE CAST TO ILLUMINATE THE UPPER FLOORS AT NIGHT AND IT WOULD CREATE A NICE ILLUSION FROM THE STREET LOOKING INWARD ON THE BUILDING, OBSERVING THE BUILDING WHILE ITS OCCUPANTS OBSERVE THE CITY.

time: one semester. instructor: nahyun hwang. place: TCAUP. DETROIT WAS A CITY THAT WAS GREATLY DEVASTATED BY THE IMPLICATION OF FREEWAY SYSTEMS WITHIN THE CITY PROPER. LARGE AMOUNTS OF VALUABLE LAND IN THE DOWNTOWN ARE OCCUPIED BY THESE LARGE FREEWAY INTERCHANGES. FURTHERMORE, THESE ACT AS LARGE PEDESTRIAN BARRICADES, MAKING THE FLOW OF PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC IMPOSSIBLE.
TO TRY AND SOLVE DETROIT’S DWINDLING POPULATION IN THE DOWNTOWN, SEVERAL TYPES OF ENTERTAINMENT VENUES HAVE BEEN CONSTRUCTED, CASINOS, ATHLETIC EVENT CENTERS, AND OTHER FORMS OF ENTERTAINMENT, THAT HAVE COST THE CITY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS, BRING PEOPLE INTO THE CITY ON THE NEAREST FREEWAY, AND ENTERTAIN THE PEOPLE COMPLETELY INTERNALLY WITHIN THE BUILDING, SHUTTING OUT THE CITY. THEN, THE PEOPLE LEAVE THE CITY ON THE NEAREST FREEWAY OUT.
MY DESIGN IS TO INCORPORATE A COMBINATION OF SYSTEMS TO HELP SOLVE BOTH OF THESE CRITICAL ISSUES. THE FIRST SOLUTION IS TO CREATE A SERIES OF UNIQUE PEDESTRIAN WALKWAYS OVER THE FREEWAY INTERSECTION. THESE WALKWAYS CONTAIN DIFFERENT OUTDOOR PROGRAMS, WHICH CONTROL ITS VARYING WIDTHS AND MOVES. THE SECOND IS A WATER PARK NAMED “HYDROPLANE.” THIS SERIES OF ENCLOSED, TRANSPARENT WATER SLIDES ALLOW FOR THE UNIQUE WATER EXPERIENCE OF WEAVING IN AND OUT OF TRAFFIC.

all you need is...one 2x6 board and some wood glue. (screws may be added for security of assembly, but aren’t 100% necessary.
just cut the 2x6 into 12 equal size pieces, approximately 2x2x4. assemble as shown. add extra v-brace supports if desired.

time: five weeks. instructor: patrick jones. place: TCAUP. THIS PROJECT BEGAN WITH SOME STUDY MODELS, FROM A PREVIOUS EXERCISE. I FOCUSED ON DESTRUCTION AND CONNECTION. FROM THAT, MY PROJECT BEGAN TO BE A STUDY OF CONTROL AND LACK THERE OF IN THE DOWNTOWN OF DETROIT. EVERYWHERE, THERE ARE SIGNS TRYING TO CONTROL ALL ACTIVITY, EVEN PROHIBITING THE STANDING OF CARS. AS SKATEBOARDS ARE OFTEN CONSIDERED DEVIANT ACTIVITY, ACTIVITIES OCCUR ON MULTIPLE LEVELS THROUGHOUT THE CITY. I MAPPED THE SITE WITH A SERIES OF BOUNDARIES IMPLIED BY ALL THE SIGNS I PHOTOGRAPHED AT THE SITE.
THE BOUNDARIES IMPLIED WHERE MY BUILDING WOULD BE PLACED ON THE SITE THROUGHT THE AREA OF HIGHEST CONTROL TO LEAST CONTROL.
FOR THE FORM OF THE BUILDING, I DECIDED TO WORK WITH A SERIES OF PERCEPTIONS. THE “FINS” THAT SLICED THROUGH THE PROGRAM BECAME ELEMENTS OF CONTROLLED VIEWS FROM THE EXTERIORS. HOWEVER, EVEN THOUGH THE FINS CONTROLLED THE VIEWS TO AN EXTENT, DEVIANCE WAS CONTROLLED THROUGH THE USE OF GLASS CURTAIN WALLS, MAKING EVEN TIGHT SPACES COMPLETELY VISIBLE TO THE OUTSIDE, MAKING THE DEVIANCE CONTROLLED BY THE SPECTATORS. MOST DEVIANCE IS HIDDEN FROM PUBLIC EYES IN DETROIT, SO BY MAKING IT VISIBLE TO THE PUBLIC, IT MAKES IT LESS LIKELY TO OCCUR.
time: five weeks. instructor: kaleena quinn. place: TCAUP. THIS PROJECT BEGAN WITH a false site, located in the city of Detroitthe challenge was to create an office and retail space that contained a fair amount of green space, used a natural ventilation system, and also used an interesting combination of construction techniques. to meet these requirements, we made an extensive green roof, used a series of curtain walls to control sunflow in and out of the building, and made parts of the building out of materials such as glass or concrete, controlling the heat flow in and out of the space. finally, we had to consider proper means of egress and calculate all of the paths from stairwells to exit to make sure the entire building was built to standard michigan exgress codes.

time: four weeks. instructor: joshua bard. place: TCAUP. THIS PROJECT BEGAN WITH A DIGITAL STUDY OF MOVEMENT. WE WERE ASKED TO USE A CAMERA AND SHOOT A 30 SECOND VIDEO OF MOVEMENT, BUT WITHOUT HOLDING THE CAMERA IN OUR HAND. I SWAYED A CAMERA FROM THE CORD BACK AND FORTH LIKE A PENDULUM, FOCUSING ON A SERIES OF BRICK WALL AND SLIT WINDOWS. I STUDIED THIS FURTHER BY MAKING A FLIP BOOK FROM 96 FRAMES OF THE VIDEO TAKEN. THEN I CREATED A DRAWING IN PERSPECTIVE, STUDYING THE WAY THAT THE BRICK SKEWED IN MOTION, BECOMING A SERIES OF PARALLELOGRAMS AND EVENTUALLY THIN LINES.
NEXT, WE WERE ASKED TO FIRST CREATE A STACK MODEL OF 96 LAYERS SHOWING OUR CONCEPT OF MOVEMENT. I CREATED THE PARALLELOGRAM MOVEMENT AND HOW IT TRANSFORMED INTO NEW ENTITIES THROUGH MOVEMENT.
FINALLY, WE WERE ASKED TO CREATE A MODEL MOLD OF MOVEMENT STUDY. THIS IS THE ROCKITE MODEL SHOWN TO THE LEFT. DIFFERENT MOMENTS OF THE MODEL MOLD THROUGH MOVEMENT INTO OTHER MOMENTS OF THE MODEL. IMAGINARY LINES CAN BE TRACED FROM THE TIPS OF THE MODEL AND THROUGH THE PLACES WHERE THE INTERIOR SPACES HOLLOW AND CUT THROUGH OTHER MOMENTS OF THE MODEL.
time: four weeks. instructor: joel schmidt. place: TCAUP. THIS WAS A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT, DOING FURTHER ANALYSIS OF THE BUILDING SYSTEM OF AN EXISTING BUILDING. THIS WAS A GROUP PROJECT, BUT THE DRAWINGS SHOWN WERE ALL CREATED BY ONLY ME.
THE ELEVATION WAS CREATED WITH CAREFUL CONSIDERATION TO MATERIALITY OF THE BUILDING SYSTEMS, CAREFUL PLACEMENT OF WINDOWS AND COLUMNS, AND THE DIFFERENT CAREFUL DETAILS SUCH AS ROOF PITCHES AND ROOF ANGLES AT SOFFETS.
NEXT, A DETAILED ELEVATION WAS CREATED, FOLLOWED BY A DETAILED WALL SECTION OF THE CUT THROUGH THE ELEVATION. THIS ALSO INCLUDED THREE BLOWN UP DETAILS AT WINDOW JAMS AND DOOR FRAMES.
time: five weeks. instructor: patrick jones. place: TCAUP. THIS PROJECT BEGAN WITH A SERIES OF EXERCISES IN MODELING. THE FIRST MODEL, PICTURED ON THE FAR LEFT, IS OF THE NOLY MAP OF ROME, CUT AND FOLDED TO CREATE A SERIES OF EXPERIENCES OR SPACES. FROM THERE I MADE SEVERAL FOLDING MODELS, SOME OF ARCHITECTURAL PROPOSALS, SOME OF LANDSCAPE PROPOSALS. THE BLUR BECAME EVIDENT WHEN I REALIZED SOME OF THE LANDSCAPES BECAME THE ARCHITECTURE THEMSELVES.
I FURTHERED THIS CONCEPT BY MAKING MY PROJECT ABOUT AN ARCHITECTURE WITHIN A CONSTRUCTED PARKSCAPE, WHERE THE ARCHITECTURE REVEALED ITSELF IN SURPRISE MOMENTS OF SKATEPARK, OCCURING WITHIN THE GROUND. THERE WERE MOMENTS UNDERNEATH A LARGE GLASS FIXTURE THAT RESEMBLED A LAKE. THERE WAS ALSO A LARGE “FAKE” RIVER WATER FEATURE WHERE PEOPLE COULD “WALK ON WATER,” WHICH CREATED VISUAL EFFECTS ON THE CORRIDOR BELOW. THERE WERE NO MOMENTS WHERE THE BUILDING STOPPED AND THE LANDSCAPE STARTED. THE TWO BECAME ONE SERIES.

nSUKKAH CITY COMPETITION.The sukkah is an ancient jewish tradition, dating back to the times of the exodus.
in this modern interpretation, we were faced with the challenge of using traditional materials to create a modern looking structure. for this reason, we decided upon the use of rope, cut wood 2x2 pieces and dowels. All of the wood angled pieces were attached together with wood dowels and wood glue.
the final most important thing was the incorporation of the night sky. for this reason, we left a lot of the roof open to the sky, with the artificial tree branches making a beautiful framed view of the sky.
