Method of Instruction.

Instruction will be given by lectures, reading and cate-chising. The lectures are intended to present all of the

leading principles of the common law applicable to the sub-ject, and the modification of the common law by statutes,and to give illustrations of the applications of the commonand statute law. Special attention is given to the statutesin force in Maryland, and to peculiarities of law in thatState, where there are such; but the reasons for these statu-tory modifications and local peculiarities are explained, sothat the student may in a short time acquaint himself withthe local peculiarities of the law in any State in which hemay practice.

Readings from text-books will be assigned on the subjectstreated of in the lectures.

The catechising at each lecture will be on the subjectsdiscussed in the preceding lecture and on the assigned read-ings.

Library and Buildings.

The buildings of the several departments of the Univer-sity of Maryland are all situated upon the corner of Lom-bard and Greene Sts., the Law School having removed totheir new building there on the first of January, 1884.Connected with the lecture hall is a large and pleasantreading room and study for the use of students, containinga carefully selected library of text-books upon the subjectsembraced in the course of study, volumes of Leading Oases,the United States and Maryland Reports, Digests, Statutes,&c. It is proposed to add to these the English CommonLaw and Equity Reports, and such other books as mayfrom time to time seem desirable, and to keep the tablessupplied with the prominent Law Reviews.

Classes and Duration of Course.

The students attending the School are divided into threeclasses—a Senior Class, an Intermediate Class, and aJunior Class. The subjects of study in each class are:

JUNIOR CLASS.

First Term (Oct. to Feb.): Common Law (ElementaryLaw), Personal Property, and Domestic Relations.

Second Term (Feb. to June): Real Property and theLaw of Contracts.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS.

First Term (Oct. to Feb.): Pleading, Torts, CommercialLaw and Shipping.

Second Term (Feb. to June): Real Property (Title),Criminal Law, Bills and Notes, Executors and Adminis-trators, and Corporations.

SENIOR CLASS.

First Term (Oct. to Feb.): Practice, Evidence, Interna-tional Law and Admiralty.

Second Term (Feb. to June): Equity Jurisprudence andProcedure, Constitutional and Statute Law.

The lectures are all after 4 P. M. A schedule of theirarrangement will be furnished at the beginning of thesession.

It will be seen that the full course of study extends overthree years, and the Faculty are satisfied that students whohave not made considerable progress in the study of law dothemselves and the Law School an injury by entering theupper classes. Where students can afford it, they shouldspend three years in the study of law. But in order tomeet the case of those who cannot afford this, students arepermitted to enter and take the examinations of more thanone class during the same term, their fitness to complete

the course in less than three years being determined bytheir ability to pass the regular examinations at the closeof each term, and to comply with the other requirementsfor graduation.

Examinations, Theses and Degrees.

The Law School confers the degree of Bachelor of Lawson students who have attended the course of lectures to allthree classes, have attained the required standard at theexaminations, have submitted to the Faculty satisfactorytheses, and argued the required number of cases in theMoot Court.

There are six examinations each session—two of theSenior Class, two of the Intermediate Class and two of theJunior Class. Each class has an examination at the closeof each term. The examinations are by printed questions,to be answered in writing. Each examination is valued at100. In order to graduate, the student must attain a gradeof at least three-fourths on the questions propounded byeach professor at each examination.

The subjects for the theses for the next session will begiven to the students in November, 1885, and they will beexpected to hand them in to the Faculty by April 1, 1886.The attention of the students is called to the fact that theFaculty will require a high standard of excellence in thetheses. The Faculty reserve to themselves the right torefuse a degree to any student writing an unsatisfactorythesis or neglecting the preparation and argument of theMoot Court cases, whatever grade he may have attained atthe examinations.

Moot Court.

The Moot Court will meet once a week during thesession, and will be presided over by one of the professors.

At the beginning of the session a pamphlet will be placedin the hands of each of the students, containing statementsof the cases to be argued before the Moot Court during theentire session of eight months; and students will be assignedto argue cases several months before the argument, whenthat is practicable.

Prizes.

The Faculty will, at the close of the Session 1885-6, awardtwo prizes—

1. A prize of $100 to the student attaining the highestgrade in the six examinations.

At the close of the session 1884-5 this prize was awardedto Fendall Marbury, Jr., of Prince George's Co., Md.

2. A prize of $100 to the student who submits the bestthesis.

At the close of the session 1884-5 this prize was awardedto Jacob Eohrback, of Frederick, Md., by a committee con-sisting of Messrs. Skipwith Wilmer, Isidor Rayner andWm, T. Brantly, of the Baltimore Bar.

Calendar for Session 1885-6.

SESSION AND TEEMS.

The next Session commences on the first Monday ofOctober (Oct. 5), 1885, and closes on May 31,1886. Therewill be a short vacation from December 24, 1885, to Janu-ary 2, 1886, inclusive.

The session is divided into two terms. The first termextends from the beginning of the Session to January31, 1886; and the second term from February 1, 1886, toMay 31, 18S6.

COMMENCEMENT.

The commencement will be held May 28,1886, at 8 P. M.

Opportunities for Attending other Lectures.

Attention is called to the advertisement of the JohnsHopkins University on page 18 of this catalogue. It willbe seen that students at the Law School will be able toattend courses of lectures at the University on the follow-ing subjects: History of Politics, Advanced PoliticalEconomy, Elements of Political Economy, History ofPolitical Economy, History of France and England,Mediaeval Church and State, and The Italian Renaissanceand the German Reformation. The student may selectone or more of these courses. The fees for attendance willbe very moderate.

Privileges, Courts, &c.

Any Student entered in one or two classes has the privi-lege, if he sees fit, to be present at the lectures in the otherclass or classes; and any graduate of the School has theprivilege of attending all the lectures for the session nextensuing his graduation.

There are seven Courts in almost continuous session inBaltimore during the entire scholastic year; and studentshave unusual opportunities to learn the law by attendanceon the Courts. Students are advised to attend the Courts

when they can conveniently do so, and to give carefulattention and thought to the proceedings.

There is a Literary Society attached to the School, knownas the Inglis Society, which is organized and conductedentirely by the students.

It has been the practice heretofore for students to formQuiz Clubs, composed of from five to ten members. Theycan, if properly conducted, be made very improving; andstudents are advised to form them.

Commencement.

The Annual Commencement for the session 1884-5 tookplace in Lehmann's Hall at 8 P. M., May 28,1885. Therewere two orations—one by L. T. Appold, of Baltimore,who was selected by the Faculty, and one by W. BeattyHarlan, of Churchville, Md., who was selected by the Classof 1885. Mr. S. Teackle Wallis, the Provost, delivered anaddress, awarded the prizes and conferred the degrees onthe Graduating Class.

At the next commencement orations will be delivered bytwo members of the Class, one selected by the Faculty andone by the Class; degrees will be conferred on the gradu-ates, and the prizes on those to whom they are awarded.

Fees and Expenses.

The fees for each term are payable strictly in advance atthe commencement of each term.

The charges for instructions are as follows:Students attending one class

There will be a Library fee of four dollars per annumfor each student, and an additional charge of ten dollarsto each graduate as a diploma fee.

Board can be had in the city at prices varying from$4 to $10 per week.

Courses in History and Politics at the JohnsHopkins University.

The following courses will be open to law students formoderate fees, to be arranged according to the number ofhours taken. All the courses here described are to be givenfrom 10 A. M. to 2 P. M.

History of Politics.This course, conducted by Dr. H. B. Adams, will be open to advanced

students only. It will consist of lectures on the History of Contempo-rary European Politics, beginning with the present century, comparativestudies in the History of European Institutions from an earlier date, andpractical examinations upon select topics of general Political History.TJiree hours weekly, through the year. 10 A. M.

Advanced Political Economy.This course consists of lectures by the instructor, twice weekly, for

one year. It opens with a discussion of the fundamental principles ofthe science, aud is followed by a careful treatment of practical economic*problems. For example, such questions are discussed as the Tariff,Cooperation, Joint-Stock Associations and other forms of Partnership,Strikes, Immigration, Wages, etc. The chief aim is to promotethought and to give the right impulse to future work.

Comparative Studies in European Administration.An advanced course of lectures by Dr. Ely on Methods of Adminis-

tration in England, France, and Germany. Special subjects for con-sideration will be the organization of governments, their economicfunctions, sanitary legislation, poor laws, appointment and tenure ofofficers in the civil service. Once weekly, through the year. 12 M.

Elements of Political Economy.A preliminary course of instruction with Dr. R. T. Ely, comprising

lectures, essays, and frequent examinations upon assigned topics. Thebasis of class-work will be Laveleye's "Elements of Political Economy,"and Cossa's "Guide to the Study of Political Economy," with selectportions of the writings of John Stuart Mill and other economists. Fivehours weekly, first half-year. 1 P. M.

History of Political Economy.

A more advanced course of lectures by Dr. Ely upon the history ofvarious economic systems, including a consideration of some of the con-temporary social problems in England and America. Five hours weekly.second half-year. 1 P. M.

History of France and England.

This is a course with Dr. J. P. Jameson for the parallel study of themediaeval and modern history of these two countries. Authorities suchas " The Student's France " and Green's " Short History of England "are used as hand-books by the class, while other reading is required inconnection with assigned topics. Three hours weekly, through the year.11 A.M.

Mediaeval Church and S t a t e .

This will be a course with Dr. H. B. Adams for the study of the rela-tions of the Church to the Roman, Frankish, and German Empires.The course will comprise lectures upon ecclesiastical institutions, reportsupon assigned themes, and examinations upon Bryce's " Holy RomanEmpire," Lea's "Studies in Church History," portions of Milman's" Latin Christianity," and other authorities. Twice weekly, first half-year. 11 A. M.

The Italian Renaissance and the German Reformation.

This is a continuation of the preceding course, and is devoted to thestudy of the revival of learning, the history of the Italian Republics andtheir influence upon Europe, the relation of the German Reformationto Italian Humanism, the progress and results of the Reformation.Essays are to be written by the students in connection with this course,and frequent oral examinations are held. Twice weekly, second half-year. 11 A. M.
