Founded more than 130 years ago, and located in the heart of Canada, the University of Manitoba (U of M) is the region’s largest research-intensive and only medical doctoral university offering over 100 academic programs including graduate studies.Our energetic and welcoming community is comprised of over 28,000 students, including graduate studies, 8,000 faculty and staff and 185,000 alumni. STUDENT GROUPS The University of Manitoba has over 110 student groups on campus to enrich your university experience through cultural and recreational programs. Groups range in focus from academic to special interest groups.

The groups are overseen by the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU), the largest student organization on campus that provides students with a health and dental plan, campus radio, newspaper, and tutor registry. UMSU also manages several businesses on campus where international students can find employment.

Living in residence gives you the opportunity to be part of a friendly and caring community on campus where you can feel at home. Each year, over 1,300 students get the full benefit of the university experience by living in residence.

Be sure to apply early. Students do not need to wait to be accepted into university to apply for residence. Residence rooms are allocated on a first come first served basis and spaces fill up quickly.

NEW PEMBINA HALL RESIDENCEOur newest residence is a modern 120,000 square-foot facility that has 360 single units, each with their own private bathroom.

LIVING AND LEARNING COMMUNITIESEach year one designated residence building becomes home to a Healthy Active Living Learning Community that emphasizes the importance of incorporating a healthy lifestyle into the commitments of a university student’s agenda.

Students must apply to be part of this community in addition to their normal residence application.

INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR STUDENTS (ICS)

The International Centre for Students offers programs and services to international students before and after their arrival to help ease their transition to Canada and ensure their experience is enjoyable, safe and successful.


If you don’t meet the University of Manitoba’s admission requirements, one of these programs can help you reach your goals. All programs listed are held on campus and coincide with the university’s academic schedule.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTRE – ELCIf you meet the academic admissions criteria but do not meet the English language proficiency requirements, the ELC can help. The University of Manitoba can accept you on the condition that you successfully complete Level 5 of the Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) at the English Language Centre. Depending on your initial placement level, IAEP can take as little as one semester to complete.1 The program prepares you for university studies by providing you with the language skills necessary to succeed at a university such as listening to lectures, learning new vocabulary and writing essays. The ELC offers three intakes every year and strives to ensure you gain the confidence you need to succeed.

INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF MANITOBA – ICMIf you fall short of the University of Manitoba’s academic requirements, are missing the English language proficiency requirement, or need extra academic support, ICM may be an option for you. Upon completion of stage 2 of the University Transfer Program (UTP), ICM students enter second year at the University of Manitoba. ICM also offers pre-university courses for those requiring some preparation before undergraduate studies.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS The Faculty of Graduate Studies has a minimum academic standard for admission. Departments may have higher requirements and additional criteria.

The minimum eligibility requirements to our Master’s programs are graduates with a four-year Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent from a recognized college or university, and a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.5) in the last two full years (or last 60 credit hours) of undergraduate study.

Students with a general (three-year) Bachelor’s Degree may be admitted to a qualifying year of study called “Pre-Master’s”. The standard minimum eligibility requirements still apply. Not all programs offer this option.

Admission to Ph.D. programs are normally based on completion of a U of M Master’s degree.

2. Medical insurance costs refer to the University of Manitoba Students’ Union extended health and dental care plan.

3. Students who are claiming an exemption based on coverage by MHSC, CIDA or other provincial or international scholarship plans must present proof of coverage to have the medical insurance charge removed. Students wishing to obtain “family” coverage may do so on application to the Registrar’s Office (room 400 University Centre).

SCHOLARSHIPS Each year, close to $475,000 is allocated to international students in the form of scholarships and bursaries.2 International high school students are automatically eligible for entrance scholarships if you apply before May 1 for the fall term and have the required senior year average. Students enrolled in an 80% course load during the fall and winter terms, who continue to do well in their studies (min 3.5 GPA) are also assessed for future scholarships (valued between $500-$750).

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE – BURSARIES AND LOANSIf you require additional financial assistance, you may qualify for a bursary after completing one full year of studies, even if you already have a scholarship. Applications are due October 1st each year. In addition, our emergency loans can provide short-term assistance to students who experience unexpected and immediate financial difficulties.

CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATIONThe University of Manitoba provides many co-op education opportunities. A co-op education is a partnership between the university, employers, and you the student. It allows you to gain academic credit from paid work experience in your field of study. This arrangement helps you gain valuable experience that will help you in the job market when you graduate.

B: Determine if you should apply to a Direct Entry or an Advanced Entry program option

Direct Entry program options are available to students applying directly from high school or those who have completed less than 24 credit hours of study at an accredited post-secondary institution.

Advanced Entry program options are for students who have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours at an accredited post-secondary institution. Some Advanced Entry program options require more than 24 credit hours of study and each program has its own specific set of prerequisites.

Note: Some programs will have both Direct Entry and Advanced Entry options, please be sure to review all admission requirements carefully.

D: Review the English language proficiency requirements

English is the language of instruction and communication at the University of Manitoba. Accordingly, an applicant whose primary language is not English, or whose previous education has been conducted in another language, must demonstrate a command of English sufficient to meet the demands of classroom instruction, written assignments and participation in tutorials and discussions. English language proficiency can be demonstrated in a variety of manners:
