Message
Tokyo to present to the world a new model for a
university that re-establishes faith in knowledge. It is necessary to transform the university
into a vigorous center for the free-flow of intellectual energy. To create such, it will
concentrate on maintaining an efficient core,
ensuring a just distribution of power, and
establishing a flexible interface. The three key words here
are Autonomy, Distribution, and
“It is the mission of the University of
Cooperation.”
from the President

Background
• The University of Tokyo is commonly known as "Todai" in Japan, an abbreviation of the Japanese characters that make up the Japanese name of the University.
• The full Japanese name of the University is the four characters that spell out Tokyo Daigaku.
• Taking the first character of Tokyo (our home city) and the first character of Daigaku (which means university), gives Todai.
Background
(cont’d)• The abbreviation UT is no longer used for several reasons.
• First, to avoid confusion with other excellent overseas universities that use that abbreviation.
• Second, to create a single brand image and identity across the University, both visually and among all of our members, irrespective of language.
Background
(cont’d)• Third, and perhaps most importantly, because even in this global age Todai is a Japanese university, and we are proud of our heritage and unique character.
• The University has 10 faculties with a total of around 30,000 students, 2,100 of whom are foreign.
• Its five campuses are in Hongō, Komaba, Kashiwa, Shirokane and Nakano. It is considered to be the most prestigious university in Japan.

One of the university's best known landmarks, Akamon (the Red Gate), is a relic of this era. The symbol of the university is the ginkgo leaf, from the trees found throughout the area.
CampusesB. Komaba Campus
- One of the five campuses of the University of Tokyo, the Komaba Campus is home to the College of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences, and a number of advanced research facilities and campus services.
