Optional This course module is designed to present an overall historical and sequential account of the development of Buddhist thought from early Buddhism, through Theravãda and other major sectarian schools, such as Madhyamaka, Yogãcãra, and Vajrayãna. These doctrinal developments cover a wide ambit, spanning over almost a millennium. Therefore, it is not studied in detail. Major schools are selected, paying attention to important doctrinal developments and highlighting the important links that run through the whole process. Among the schools to be dealt with are Theravãda, Mahãsanghika, Sûtrãntika, Puggalavãda. Sarvãstivãda, Madhyamaka, Yogãcãra and Vajrayãna.

PLG 3145 Prakrit Languages and Religious Literature
Compulsory The intention of this course is to provide sufficient knowledge for reading and comprehension on Prakrit languages. This course further emphasis religious teachers like Gautama Buddha and Mahāvīra who belonged to ascetic tradition (sramana) preached their doctrines in Prakrit dialects called Magadhi and Ardha Magadhi. Language of Ashoka inscriptions called Ashoka Prakrit is also valuable source materials. Awareness of Prakrit is supported to comprehend the specialty of Pali language and then, it provides facilities to aware Buddhist thoughts through other religious and non-religious sources.
