A Message from the President

Hello UC Sports Fans, UC’s commitment “to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement” is a mission that brings to each student countless opportunities and real responsibilities. Athletics plays a vital role in the life of the University and in accomplishing our mission. Teamwork, fitness, community involvement, and leadership are some of the many life-long learning opportunities acquired through athletics. The University’s Men’s soccer team provides growth experiences for student athletes and visibility for the university. It is an important part of our strong tradition of athletic success. We have championship teams competing in the new Mountain East Conference. We are fully committed to the philosophy of balance between athletics and academics that is the hallmark of the NCAA Division II. Accordingly, UC athletics combines the zeal to have the most successful teams with the expectation that each student athlete will represent the University superbly every day and everywhere. The University of Charleston is committed to providing the best possible experiences for our students and also providing exciting spectator and involvement opportunities for residents of the greater Charleston community. I wish you and all of our talented student athletes the very best. Sincerely,Dr. Edwin H. WelchPresident

The University of Charleston formally known as Morris Harvey College was founded in 1888 by the Southern Methodist denomination in Barboursville W.Va. They named the college Morris Harvey in honor of a prominent donor.

In the time of the Great Depression, the college moved to Charleston, the capital of West Virginia, in hopes of making use of its metropolitan area. At this time Morris Harvey became independent with no affiliations with the Methodist church. The college gradually grew until the need of a campus, which was built and is presently located on the south bank of the Kanawha River.

The name change from Morris Harvey College to the University of Charleston was made by the Board of Trustees in 1978. This gives the University an identity in its surrounding community; which is important to the University as it benefits from its location in the dynamic capital city and from the beauty of Appalachian hills. The campus is in proximity to West Virginia’s largest medical, commercial, and financial centers which provides excellent opportunities for students.

The University serves the community as a focal point for numerous intellectual, scientific, cultural, athletic, and civic events. These interactions between the University and the community are vital to the achievement of the University's mission:

“To educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living and community involvement”.

· 1,391 full-time students in Fall 2012· 109 international students from 34 countries· Students from 31 states· 300 employees· 14,000 alumni, 6,000 in the Kanawha Valley· Excellent campus facilities: 7 of the 11 buildings have been built since 1998, including

four resident halls and a fitness centre· Graduate programs in business and pharmacy· 15 Division II varsity athletic teams· Average GPA – 3.35· Average ACT score – 23· 25% of students who start at UC and stay through graduation get their degrees in less

than four years, and an additional 10% proceed to graduate school before receiving an undergraduate degree

· 94% of graduates are employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation

Chris Grassie- Head Men's Soccer Coach

Phone: 304-357-4899Email: [email protected]

Coach Grassie finished his second season with the Golden Eagles in 2012 with an unblemished WVIAC record of 9-0 and 13-2-4 overall, after finishing the 2011 season with a 13-6 recording and leading UC to the 2011 WVIAC regular season championship, going 8-1 in league matches. UC completed another successful season under Grassie by winning the WVIAC regular season and tournament championship. On the way to the conference tournament title, UC blanked Shepheard 3-0 in the semifinal, and then culminated a great season by finishing off D&E on penalty kicks 5-4 after a scoreless 120 minutes in the final in front of a packed Schoenbaum stadium crowd.

For his coaching exploits in 2012, Grassie was awarded the WVIAC 2012 Coach of the year award. " The Mountain East Conference (MEC) is a collegiate athletic conference that competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II level and officially began competition on September 1, 2013. It consists of 12 schools, mostly in West Virginia with some other members in Ohio and Virginia.

" The conference is an offshoot of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), another Division II conference that had operated primarily in West Virginia since 1924. In June 2012, the nine football-playing schools in that conference announced plans to break away and form a new all-sports conference. The schools that made the initial announcement were the University of Charleston, Concord University, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Seton Hill University, Shepherd University, West Liberty University, West Virginia State University, and West Virginia Wesleyan College.

" The 2013 season was the first in the MEC (Mountain East Conference) history, the regular season championship was won by Notre Dame College (Ohio) after a season where they massed an impressive 33 points from a possible 36. The University of Charleston came in a close second with 25 points after finishing the season with a conference record of 8-3-1. The first MEC tournament was held after the regular season had finished and the 4 top ranked conference team qualified. Held at the neutral venue of fairmont the University of Charleston came out on top after defeating Urbana University 2-0 in the Quarter-finals, and then defeating the regular season champions Notre Dame College 1-0 in overtime.
