The course will provide you with the tuition you’ll need to demonstrate the level of academic English language and skills required by the University of Bristol. You may join the course at the start in September or at the beginning of term two in January, depending on your IELTS score.

The programme explores the communication of subject knowledge in English across a range of disciplines at and beyond master’s level, equipping you for the increasingly inter-disciplinary world of the 21st century. As well as improving your knowledge and use of academic English grammar and vocabulary, we will help you develop an awareness of what is expected of you when studying at master’s level at a top UK institution.

You will improve your general academic skills, such as taking notes from lectures, dealing with long reading texts and a heavy reading load, taking an active part in academic discussions and giving presentations. You will learn to write a range of academic texts for different audiences and purposes. You will leave the programme fully equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that you need to succeed at a top British university and the confidence to communicate your ideas with professors, peers or the public.

For entry requirements, fees and details of how to apply, please visit bristol.ac.uk/english-language/study/pre-sessional-courses.

Seabed life promises new wave of antibioticsThe search is on for new antibiotics, with antimicrobial resistance now one of the world’s most pressing public health issues. Researchers from the Bristol BioDesign Institute have discovered microorganisms on the Pacific seabed that can produce molecules with potent antibiotic properties. This raises the prospect of producing a new generation of drugs to combat so-called superbugs – strains of bacteria that are resistant to current antibiotics.

Research excellenceBristol’s researchers share ideas and expertise to tackle global challenges, help solve practical problems and mentor future generations. Our 11 research institutes draw together world-leading academics from across different disciplines and build on our culture of innovation, strong community and outstanding facilities.

New models lead to smoother helicopter ridesHelicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland was developing new blades intended to increase both helicopter speed and lifting capability, when they discovered the blades generated large vibrations which made the helicopter more difficult to control. Professor Paul Weaver and PhD student Stuart Lemanski developed more precise modelling, based on fundamental concepts of structural engineering, to refine the design and reduce the vibrations.

INTRODUCTIONRESEARCH EXCELLENCE

The Quipu ProjectUniversity of Bristol research inspired a documentary, produced by The Guardian, to highlight the experiences of over a quarter of a million people who were sterilised in Peru in the mid-1990s. Many did not give full consent for their sterilisation and some were forced to do so. Thanks to a specially developed phone line, connected to the internet, the project provided the first opportunity for the women’s testimonies to be shared and listened to around the world.

Reducing the cost of artificial snowA new form of artificial snow will soon be seen in blockbuster movies thanks to a collaboration between the School of Chemistry and industry supplier Snow Business. Master’s student Lizzie Mould investigated hundreds of combinations of chemicals before finding the right formula to create realistic-looking snow that is safe, affordable and environmentally friendly.

More summer sunshine leading to increased Greenland ice meltA team of scientists, led by the University of Bristol, has discovered that a marked decrease in summer cloud cover during the last 20 years has significantly accelerated melt from the Greenland ice sheet. Since 1995, researchers found that Greenland has lost about 4,000 gigatons of ice, which has become the biggest single contributor to the rise in global sea levels.

Research programmes

As part of the Russell Group, Bristol is proud to be one of the UK’s leading universities, with an established record of producing groundbreaking research that makes an impact on society at local, national and international levels.

We have an excellent international reputation in research and are a member of the Worldwide Universities Network, a group of 21 research-led institutions of international standing. For details, please visit bristol.ac.uk/research/environment/alliances.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. In the latest submission, Bristol was ranked among the UK’s best research universities. Our research is shown to have top quality and major impact on society and the economy.

Our research programmesBesides the traditional PhD and research master’s degrees, the University offers a growing number of professional or extended doctoral programmes.

Master’s degrees by research (MSc, MPhil or MLitt)A master’s by research includes a structured research project where you can explore research themes through critical analysis and in-depth study. These programmes can be a valuable foundation for starting a PhD.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)This is the most common qualification gained by a research student, normally representing three to four years of study depending on the discipline, and resulting in a recognised original contribution to knowledge.

Professional doctorates (EdD, EngD, DEdPsych, MD, DDS)These qualifications are typically suited to professional practitioners already qualified to an advanced level in their area of specialism, who wish to deepen and challenge their understanding. They include EngD programmes designed to suit industry needs, where research engineers spend about 75 per cent of their time working in a company on collaborative research projects.

Extended doctoral programmesA growing number of students choose extended programmes (typically four years of study), which include specialist taught training and advanced research projects, often before selecting an area of particular interest to pursue to doctoral level. This route is especially popular in the science and engineering-based disciplines.

Funded doctoral trainingAs a leading research-intensive university, Bristol receives funding for doctoral education from a wide range of sources, and has one of the largest concentrations of funded Doctoral Training Partnerships and Centres in the UK. These often offer full scholarships for three to four years, and many are run in collaboration with other universities, or with global companies, providing access to a wealth of resources. For further information about these programmes, please see pp18-19.

GW4 AllianceWhen you join the University of Bristol for your PhD, you will be part of the GW4 Alliance, which comprises four of the most research-intensive and ambitious universities in the UK: the universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter. Many of our PhD students collaborate with academics and students across the GW4 region to undertake globally competitive research.

This network offers a variety of advantages to postgraduate research students registered at any of its four institutions, including access to a collaborative network, expert training opportunities and shared resources (eg special collections, archives and equipment). To find out more, please visit the GW4 website at www.gw4.ac.uk/doctoral-training.

17INTRODUCTIONRESEARCH PROGRAMMES

Bristol has one of the largest concentrations of funding and support for PhD research training in the UK. Grants from the UK Research Councils and other major funders support doctoral training across the whole spectrum of academic strength at Bristol. These programmes often offer studentships to cover fees and living costs, and are sometimes operated in collaboration with other universities and research organisations, or with regional and global companies, giving students access to a wealth of resources and opportunities.

We have been successful in securing multi-million pound funding for doctoral training programmes from UK Research Councils, the Wellcome Trust and other charitable organisations, and EU-funded innovative training networks. This funding, coupled with our top five position in the most recent UK-wide Research Excellence Framework, means we can offer numerous opportunities for funded, world-class PhD research.

We currently have 28 funded Centres for Doctoral Training, each offering excellent postgraduate research opportunities and a wide range of skills training for the brightest and most ambitious students. Many of these funded initiatives bring together academic expertise across multiple subject areas to create interdisciplinary programmes. These programmes equip graduates with a broad range of skills and knowledge that can be applied across a wide variety of careers within and outside of academia.

Doctoral Training PartnershipsIn 2016, the Medical Research Council awarded £4.6 million to launch the GW4 BioMed Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), bringing together the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter to develop the next generation of medical researchers.

The South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership has been awarded £14.2 million by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. This DTP represents a collaboration with seven other universities and draws on the resources and expertise of non-academic partners such as BBC Drama, the National Trust and English Heritage. In 2017-18, up to 56 doctoral studentships in the arts and humanities are being awarded.

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funds the NERC Great Western Four+ Doctoral Training Partnership. This DTP is designed to train tomorrow’s research leaders in earth and environmental sciences. It brings together the four GW4 universities (Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter) and six research organisations with 24 associate partner organisations representing the full range of employers of NERC science PhD graduates. The DTP awards at least 37 PhD studentships annually, which include fees and stipend at RCUK rates, an £11,000 research training support grant and a £4,000 training budget.

The South West Doctoral Training Partnership represents a collaboration between the universities of Bristol, Exeter, Bath, Plymouth and the West of England (UWE), bringing together social science academic leaders across 17 disciplinary and interdisciplinary pathways. Funded by the Economic and Social Science Research Council, they offer 45 studentships annually in a range of social science disciplines.

Centres for Doctoral Training Bristol leads eight Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT), and is a partner University in six additional collaborative CDTs. The EPSRC centres cover a wide range of areas of research excellence in science and engineering, from robotics to synthetic biology, nanomaterials to water engineering, and much more. Each of these centres usually offers at least ten competitive studentships per year.

Additionally, more than 50 PhD scholarships across science and engineering are available through the EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership.

Many of the PhD opportunities will have an industry dimension and are carried out in collaboration with an industrial partner. One such example of an industry-sponsored opportunity is the EPSRC iCASE scholarship scheme (10-20 per annum over the last three years), which offer an enhanced stipend to successful candidates.

Application requirements will vary between programmes. Please check the website of the relevant programme for further information and contact details. You can find this via bristol.ac.uk/doctoral-college/centres.

19INTRODUCTIONFUNDED DOCTORAL TRAINING

The Bristol Doctoral College has two key purposes: to support the growth of the Bristol postgraduate research (PGR) community and to enhance the experience of our research students.

We work to ensure that the environment in which PGR students carry out their research is supportive, that the skills training they receive is of the highest possible quality, and that they are well prepared for the next stage in their careers after completing their research degree.

Our initiatives to meet these purposes are varied:

• We coordinate a number of PhD scholarship schemes, for example the China Scholarship Council – University of Bristol Joint Scholarships Programme for 20 PhD students per year across all six faculties.

• We work very closely with our extensive network of doctoral training centres to attract the very best students to Bristol.

• We are developing a suite of PhD programmes with global partner universities where students will carry out research with both partner institutions.

• We work with industry partners to extend the opportunities for students to gain experience and to do research in collaboration with them.

• We welcome our new PGR students at a University inauguration, to celebrate their achievements and look forward to their contributions to our multidisciplinary research community.

The Doctoral College (bristol.ac.uk/doctoral-college) provides a coordinated, University-wide approach to doctoral training and researcher development. Our team of dedicated staff supports a thriving and innovative interdisciplinary community of researchers.

The Doctoral College organises a wide range of training sessions, collaborative events, interactive workshops and engagement opportunities, specifically designed for doctoral researchers. It also provides a hub of information, guidance and resources to all postgraduate research students at all stages of their degree.

Our comprehensive programme of personal and professional development activities helps ensure that doctoral researchers excel in their studies. This programme was commended by the UK Quality Assurance Audit for Higher Education in 2016. From public speaking to project management, networking to writing quality papers, our programme of training will also enable research students to develop the skills and competencies to succeed in their chosen career path, whatever that may be.

Bristol’s outstanding research profile is underpinned by the contribution of our postgraduate researchers. The annual Research without Borders festival of postgraduate research, organised by the Bristol Doctoral College, enables doctoral students to showcase their research to a broad, public audience. The fortnightly BDC Bulletin keeps the postgraduate research community up to date with the latest news and opportunities across the University and beyond.

Living in Bristol

A festival city The city plays host to a wide range of festivals all year round. These include the International Balloon Fiesta; Bristol Harbour Festival; music festivals such as Bristol Sounds and Love Saves the Day; and Upfest, Europe’s largest urban art festival.

The sound of Bristol Bristol is famous for its diverse music scene, with festivals championing new music and venues where you can enjoy everything from unsigned bands to chart acts. Gig spaces vary from pubs such as The Louisiana and The Fleece to the O2 Academy and the Anson Rooms for big-name bands. Bristol’s clubbing scene has it all too, from huge venues to sleek hip-hop basement bars. For something more chilled, Colston Hall and St George’s stage classical, folk and world music concerts.

Eat, drink and shopBristol’s central shopping area, Cabot Circus, is packed with big-name department stores and famous high-street brands. If you’re looking for something a bit different, there are hundreds of distinctive independent shops close to the University in Clifton Village, Park Street and Gloucester Road, which is home to the largest number of independent traders in the UK.

There’s an abundance of good food, too. In the city centre, award-winning restaurants rub shoulders with pop-up cafés, while the stalls of St Nicholas Market offer abundant options for quick eats. Global food in all its variety is celebrated in Bristol, where you will find a diverse range of eateries.

Faculty of Arts

The faculty provides world-class academic and professional training for more than 600 postgraduates across a broad range of academic disciplines. Our researchers deal with subjects at the core of human experience; students write and think about the cultural, intellectual and social inheritance of the world’s peoples, past and present. Postgraduates study at three levels: taught master’s (MA), one-year research master’s (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Taught programmes can be full-time and taken in one year or part-time with the workload split over two or three years. Our research programmes start in either September or January. The MPhil is a one-year (two years part-time) tailor-made research programme at master’s level. The qualification is awarded on successful completion of a 25,000-word dissertation. The PhD research programme can normally be taken after completion of an MA or MPhil programme. Doctoral programmes are usually three years in length on a full-time basis or six years part-time. The qualification is awarded on successful completion of an 80,000-word dissertation.

We are a key member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (SWW DTP), a scholarly community linking eight leading universities and prestigious sector partners. The DTP offers bespoke training and resources for groundbreaking academic research and a lifetime of intellectual endeavour.

We pride ourselves on offering unique resources for research. Bristol’s Theatre Collection, which features 1.5 million items dating from 1572 to the present, is one of the largest archives of British theatre history in the world, shedding rich light on many disciplines. The Brunel Collection is the world’s finest archive of Isambard Kingdom Brunel source material. Alongside other University Special Collections, the Allen Lane Penguin Archive provides further exceptional opportunities for original projects.

Research in the Faculty of ArtsThe Faculty of Arts is renowned for its research activity. The unique combination of individual disciplines and collaborations creates a vitality and vibrancy in the faculty’s research structure. All staff in the faculty are active researchers, and many are well known within their own specialisms as well as in the media.

Students in the faculty are in constant contact with academics who are at the forefront of their disciplines, and there is a large cohort of research students across all subject areas.

Faculty of Life Sciences

Our faculty embraces cross-cutting themes in the modern life sciences, ranging from ecology and human behaviour to biomedical mechanisms and applications. We have a long-standing tradition of excellence in research and teaching and are proud to be considered among the best at what we do.

Our taught postgraduate programmes, which include collaborations with North Bristol NHS Trust (MSc Applied Neuropsychology) and NHS Blood and Transplant (MSc Transfusion and Transplantation Sciences), provide bespoke training at the highest level and are delivered by experts in their fields from across the faculty. Our graduates typically go on to pursue clinical training, PhD study or other careers in the life sciences and beyond.

Postgraduate research students receive excellent supervision, training, guidance and mentoring, and make significant contributions to the research activities across the faculty. Most postgraduate students are based in laboratories in the central Bristol campus, including the new £56 million Life Sciences Building. Some postgraduate students may spend time in the laboratories of their institutional collaborators, which can be academic, industry or clinic-based.

Our research is well supported by major grants and Doctoral Training Programmes from funding bodies, such as the Medical Research Council,

the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the Wellcome Trust, the British Heart Foundation, Arthritis UK, Cancer Research UK and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, as well as from industry and the European Union.

Research in the Faculty of Life Sciences Research in the Faculty of Life Sciences is wide ranging. Biomedical research focuses on advancing our understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying human health and disease, and finding ways to translate this information from bench to clinic. Our research themes encompass cancer biology, cardiovascular science, dynamic cell biology, infection and immunity, molecular biosciences, neuroscience, regenerative medicine and synthetic biology. In Biological Sciences, research focuses on evolutionary biology, animal behaviour and sensory biology, plant and agricultural sciences and ecology and global change. Psychological research in the faculty encompasses two broad themes of cognition, which focuses on the psychology and development of language and memory; and brain, behaviour and health, which examines links between nutrition and behaviour and the psychological effects of caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, together with the biological and psychological factors underlying addiction.

Researchers work in the laboratory and in nature, and study single molecules, individual cells, whole organisms, populations and communities. Our research is underpinned by world-class core facilities providing support and expertise in imaging, which allows us to visualise single molecules in isolation or in living cells and tissues; the -omics, which help to generate an integrated understanding of cell physiology in

health and disease; molecular and cell biology; animal sensory systems; agriculture and crop science; molecular ecology and evolution; flow cytometry; and eye tracking and motion-capture laboratories, sound-attenuated space for speech recording, biological psychology laboratories and brain imaging (EEG, MRI and fMRI).

The faculty’s commitment to translating its expertise in fundamental biomedical research from bench to bedside and beyond is predicated in part on our involvement in multidisciplinary collaborations. Our researchers are centrally involved in the Bristol Neuroscience, Bristol Cardiovascular, and Bristol Vision Institute research groupings, and form an integral part of the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research.

As a postgraduate member of the Faculty of Life Sciences, you can expect to be fully supported by the faculty and benefit from the exceptional research and teaching resources that are unique to each academic school, discipline and Doctoral Training Programme. The faculty and its schools are responsive to the training needs of its students and offer bespoke workshops to enhance your effectiveness as a researcher. A transferable skills training programme will also help you to develop and improve your expertise in key areas, including:

• employability, enterprise and innovation; • global citizenship and sustainability; • public speaking at scientific conferences; • creating and delivering presentations; • writing academic papers; • ethical implications of research; • outreach – sharing your research with others.

In addition to PhD study, the faculty also offers research-based MD and MSc by Research postgraduate degree programmes.

Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science provides an outstanding intellectual environment for more than 700 postgraduate students.

We are among the top three universities in the UK in our concentration of nationally funded Centres for Doctoral Training and Doctoral Training Programmes in the basic sciences, where students undertake a four-year PhD programme which typically includes one year of master’s-level training. Current centres include Bioscience and Food Security, Catalysis, Chemical Synthesis, Condensed Matter Physics, Diamond Science and Technology, Environmental Science, Functional Nanomaterials, Quantum Engineering, Synthetic Biology, and Theory and Modelling of Chemical Sciences.

Alongside these, each school in the faculty offers PhD programmes across a broad range of disciplines, supervised by internationally leading researchers.

The faculty hosts a range of taught master’s programmes, including Palaeobiology, Volcanology, Climate Change Science and Policy, Mathematical Sciences, Nanoscience and Functional Nanomaterials, and Nuclear Science and Engineering. In addition, each school offers a one-year MSc by Research.

Research in the Faculty of ScienceSome of the most significant discoveries of both this and the last century are associated with research carried out in Bristol, reflecting the faculty’s strong international profile and our outstanding people and facilities. The latest Research Excellence Framework ranked the Faculty of Science third nationally after Cambridge

and Imperial College London. This reflects an exceptional depth of talent and capacity for the development of world-leading research.

For example, researchers from across the School of Earth Sciences collaborate to investigate issues such as the evolution and architecture of the Earth, global biogeochemical cycles, evolution of biodiversity and morphology, and geological hazards and risks. Geographical Sciences research can be characterised in terms of the global significance of the physical and social scientific questions it addresses.

Mathematics research is divided into three groups: Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Probability, Analysis and Dynamics. Members of the school interact with colleagues from a wide variety of disciplines ranging from social sciences to medicine. They also collaborate with other organisations, such as Hewlett-Packard, QinetiQ, Unilever, Barclays Bank and National Air Traffic Services.

Research facilities include the state-of-the-art Centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information, home to some of the quietest labs in the world with vibration levels lower than the lowest recognised criteria. The nuclear magnetic resonance facilities in the School of Chemistry are some of the best equipped in the UK, with 12 solution-state NMR spectrometers, while the School of Mathematics will soon move to a newly refurbished building, which will provide an excellent environment for future researchers and students. The Faculty of Science attracts outstanding PhD and MSc students from all over the world. We take great pride in our postgraduate students and the significant contribution they make to the intellectual life of the faculty. Many programmes are run in association with industrial partners, whose workforces in turn benefit from Bristol’s exceptional research and training opportunities.

‘The integration of education and research in the faculty helps to take postgraduate studies to the cutting edge of modern science.’Professor Timothy Gallagher Dean, Faculty of Science
