Newsletter

Dear Members,

Welcome to February! The month of sweethearts and a tribute to our Presidents.

Winter is almost over and spring will be here before you know it. Let's hope that

Punxsutawney Phil has a good prediction for us.

January at the UClub began with Perry Metz, executive director of WTIU Public

Television and WFIU Public Radio. Perry gave us an insider’s look at the world of

public television and radio. He predicted that perhaps the future will include a "voice

activated" device on the wall of your house that will control all your electronic

devices. Perry shared that 10 million tuned in for the season premiere of Master-

piece classic "Downton Abbey" and assured us the series will continue. He also

talked about the who, what, and how, of modern TV and Radio, then graciously

answered questions from the audience.

Dr. James Madison, a favorite speaker of all, is sure to engage us with his history

of Indiana including information that many of us either have not heard before or had

long forgotten. The UWC brings this excellent program to you on February 12th in

the Presidents’ Room at the UClub. Sign up now as registration closes soon.

Professor Richard Rose will entertain us with his fascinating talk on "What research

with twins tells us about ourselves”. You don’t need to be a twin to enjoy this

fascinating talk. Sign up now for this one, too!

Always wanted to try "Line Dancing"? Here’s your chance to have fun and get some

exercise! Join the party on Saturday, February 21st at 7 PM in the Presidents’ Room

at the UClub. Taking reservations now!

A special thanks to Linda Gregory and Linda Burton of the Antiques Group for

organizing the incredible overnight trip to Cincinnati on April 23-24. This trip is

open to all. Make your reservation today. The University Club had a booth at the

Bloomington Bridal Show on January 18th

and interest in our fabulous club was high!

The University Club - Out and about in B-town!

The Bloomington Bridal Show January 18th

UClub Manager, Deb Cordrey, setting up the trade show booth

UClub Community Chair, Carolyn Anderson, and UClub Manager, Deb Cordrey at the Bloomington Convention Center Bridal Show

The Bloomington Bridal Show is held every January at the Bloom-ington Convention Center. There were over 60 of the area’s finest wedding professionals on hand to help guests with wedding day plans including the University Club!

Everything from banquet halls to photographers, caterers, formal-wear companies, and DJ’s were represented at the show. There was even a musician who would write a personal song for the bride and groom, and an artist drawing caricatures of engaged couples!

This year there were over 550 Attendees! Of those, 240 were ‘brides to be’ who had pre-registered for the show and had the opportunity to win free giveaways and discounts throughout the day.

The Bridal Show is a great way for the Club to showcase our beautiful rooms, and get the word out that the University Club is a very special place with affordable banquet and meeting space. The Presidents’ Room and Faculty Room are perfect for smaller weddings, receptions, bridal showers, bachelor parties, rehearsal dinners, and Sunday brunches after the big day!

Remember the University Club when friends and family make wedding plans, and be sure to take advantage of the room rental discounts you receive through your Club membership.

The University Club is a member of the Bloomington Wedding Planners Gathering. This group of wedding professionals meet monthly for business networking and referral opportunities.

February's birth flower is the violet, which signifies watchfulness, loyalty, and faithfulness. Give a violet to someone to let them know you'll always be there for them.

The other February flower is the primrose, which lets someone know you can't live without them.

Dick Rose describes himself as in “nominal retirement” from the IU Department of Psychology and Brain Science. But he continues his work in psychology where he concentrates on the curious patterns of similarity, other than the physical, obviously, which arise in twins. When he isn’t pursuing his NIH-funded research on that subject, he can be found serving on the Boards of the Interfaith Winter Shelter and the Shalom Community Center, or in the choir stalls of the First United Methodist Church.

Professor Paul Helmke, former Mayor of Fort Wayne, IN and Chairman of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, understands how the controversial topic of guns, violence, and the second amendment engender strong opinions and passionate debate. Is there a common ground where we can meet and rationally discuss this important

issue? Paul Helmke believes that when armed with the facts, we can reach that common ground.

published five books about Indiana artists, past and present. We are pleased to have her with us to speak of

Selma Steele, the wife of T. C. Steele, a trained artist who approached her gardens from a painter’s point of

view, and whose gardens were showcased in many of T.C.’s paintings. It was thanks to Selma that the “House

of Singing Winds” has been preserved as part of the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. We look forward to learn-

ing more about her.

SPRING - LOW GAP - SATURDAY, APRIL 18TH

In the 1991 edition of Nature Walks in Southern Indiana, Alan McPherson describes Low Gap Trail as a

"rigorous day hike." When we did it in 2014 it was a workout. While much of the trail is on old roadbeds,

expect to see spring wildflowers, particularly in the rock shelter area. They will distract from the ups and

downs, and aching muscles. For those wanting to stretch themselves, while exploring the backcountry.

Leave Time: 7:30 a.m. Carpool from 1505 E. Richland Drive to Morgan Monroe State Forest.

Distance: 10.7 miles. Estimated hiking time: 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 hours. Difficulty: Strenuous

knowledge of yoga is necessary. Everyone works at their own level.

Our group meets throughout the year each Tuesday from 10 — 11 am at

Recently named “One of the 10 best places to see art in smaller cities” by USA Today, we will visit this celebrated mu-

new works by artists such as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Charles Burchfield, Zoltan Sepeshy and Edward Hop-

per, and it remains the feature for which the Swope is best known. Of note to our residents, an exhibit called Fertile

Ground: Midwest Printmaking Traditions will feature 10 works by Rudy Pozzatti. After lunch, we will tour the Indiana

Theatre. This iconic Terre Haute landmark opened on January 28, 1922, and occupies a special place in American thea-

tre architecture design. The Theatre was built by Terre Haute resident T.W. Barhydt to be a lasting gift to the city of

Terre Haute and it was designed by America’s preeminent designer John Eberson to be his first prototype atmospheric
