Suffolk Higher Education Convention 201214 June 2012, 9.30am – 3.00pm | UCS Waterfront Building, Ipswich
Welcome to the Suffolk Higher Education Convention 2012 and to UCS. This event provides you with an excellent opportunity to find out about higher education, to consider your course and university options, and to plan the next steps for your future career.
This is the fourth convention being held in the UCS Waterfront Building in Ipswich. We encourage you to use this event to find out as much as you possibly can. With over 100 representatives, and thousands of higher education courses and career options available to you, this is a great place to start.
We hope you enjoy the day.
External Relations and Marketing Team UCS
Welcome
1. Think about what you would like to study. Consider your career plans, the subjects you enjoyed at school and are currently studying. Perhaps you might want to develop your hobbies or interests? If you are not sure what you want to do, take a look at www.ucas.com to give you some course ideas.
2. Think about where you would like to study. Consider the location, type of institution, facilities available, studying locally or moving away from home.
3. Discuss your options with your parents/carers, teachers and careers advisors to gather as much information as you can.
4. Study the floor plan and course index in this guide and highlight each stand you would like to visit.
5. There are a range of seminars taking place on the day. Have a look at the timetable on the opposite page to plan them into your time at the convention.
6. Make a list of pre-prepared questions to ask the higher education and careers representatives on the day. There are some ideas on the opposite page.
Making the most of the conventionBefore attending the convention, we recommend that you do a little research. The more preparation you can do, the better. Here are a few ideas to help you:

Student FinanceThere are definite advantages to gaining a higher education qualification, but it is important that you take time to think about the financial aspects of going to university and research the support available to you.
Whilst at university or college, your main expenses will fall into two categories:
Tuition fees ■
Your living costs (maintenance costs such as accommodation, ■
food, books, transport, clothing etc)
Rent and bills ✔
Food ✔
Toiletries and housekeeping ✔
Travel ✔
Mobile phone ✔
Books and stationery ✔
Clothes ✔
Entertainment and socialising ✔
Student loansThere are two types of student loan available, one for tuition fees and one for living costs. Both types of loan are supplied by Student Finance England and students will be able to apply for this through www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance.
All students are entitled to receive the full tuition fee loan, and the amount of living cost loan is based on household income. Students don’t start repaying their loans until they have left higher education and are earning over £21,000 per year.
Non-repayable grants and bursariesSome students will be able to apply to Student Finance England for a non-repayable maintenance grant. This is dependent on household income.
Individual universities may have additional bursaries or support available including the National Scholarship Programme. Information on this can be found on university websites and in their prospectuses.
BudgetingBudgeting is an excellent way of managing finances whilst at university. Things you may need to budget for include:

Next steps
The convention will help you in your initial research into higher education and potential career paths. But what comes next?
Research
Take a look at the prospectuses you picked up at the convention. Prospectuses are produced by universities to provide potential students with information about courses, open days, student support, accommodation and applying. They also point you in the direction of where you can find out more. Internet based research is a great place to find out further, perhaps more detailed, information. Your school or college may have
these resources, or you could drop into your local LEAP Centre (www.leap.ac.uk) to research your options.
Open days
Most higher education institutions run open days throughout the year, and these are definitely worth attending. They are a great opportunity to talk to academic staff and current students to find out what the place is really like. Making the effort to explore a university of college in person should prevent you from making the wrong decision when thinking about where to apply. See www.opendays.com for a calendar of university open days.
Thinking of taking a gap year?
Each year thousands of applicants choose to defer entry to university or college. Taking a gap year gives you the opportunity to enjoy new experiences and learn new skills. A well-structured gap year can set you apart from others when applying to university, college or when looking for employment. Many look favourably on applicants who have used their gap year to gain valuable experience, whether they choose to travel, work, volunteer or study.
Organised with support from UCAS and HELOA.
