1.800.772.0116 30 Universal Serial Bus (USB) Cable Universal Serial Bus (USB) was developed to simplify and improve the interface between personal computers and associated peripheral devices as well as the user. Such peripheral devices include keyboards, pointing devices, printers, disk drives, network adapters and portable consumer electronics like video cameras and music players. USB cables were designed to be “hot pluggable” and self-configuring once connected. This greatly alleviated the need for operator device inputs, system configuration and rebooting. The cables were also designed to transmit both signal and power making them highly versatile. In fact, USB cables have become frequently used to power smaller portable devices. The USB standard is unique in that it can takes advantage of peripheral device processing power, enabling the devices to self-manage and speed up operations. However, USB cables are limited in length, generally short runs from a host to a peripheral device. USB 2.0 transmits data at a maximum speed of 480 Mbps. It was released in April of 2000 and is still widely in use today. It has since been superseded by USB 3.0 Superspeed which offers further improvements in performance, i.e. 5.0 Gbit/s, SuperSpeed 3.1 at 10 Gbit/s and SuperSpeed 3.2 at 20 Gbit/s. The USB 4.0 specification released in 2019 is based on the Thunderbolt 3 specification, which supports 40 Gbit/s and is backwards compatible with USB 3.2 and USB 2.0. Universal Serial Bus (USB) Cable
