Universal Accessibility in Public Transport

Mission

Bangladeshi Systems Change Advocacy Network (B-SCAN) & Engineering Students’ Association of

Bangladesh (ESAB) [hereinafter ‘we’]  want to get a design for the public road transportation system

(specially based on public bus) where wheelchair depended people can move comfortably by themselves.

Theme and Inspiration

In Bangladesh 15% of total population is differently able and unfortunately still we do not know the exact

figure of how many people are depended on wheelchairs. And thus still we do not have such a system

where they can have a better everyday life. For making these people able to move around us comfortably

just like us and for making aware the other people about this serious issue we are going to arrange a design

contest. We hope the engineering students from different disciplines will make this initiative successful.

As an engineering student, do you dream for such a Bangladesh where a wheelchair depended person can

reach his/her destination by sitting beside you in a public bus? Are you the that person who loves to dream

for such a country and if you are then yes we are in search of you.

If Engineering means Innovation, Idea and Humanity to you, Then You can design it. We want unique and

equal access to transport, we want equality in mobility, your best design can give us solution for better life.

Come and join, Design to break the barriers. Get registered today and make you proud to be a part of this

nationwide noble contest.

Challenge

This is the high time to design a perfect & easily implementable solution for the wheelchair depended

people so that they can move from the footpath to inside of the bus. This is the one & only challenge in this

contest.

Your solution can come from any perception of engineering like mechanical, civil or architecture. But ideas

will have to be implementable from the perspective of the current city transportation (city bus services,

especially BRTC Bus services) system of Bangladesh.

You will have to design your solution in such a way that make us able to directly implement your solution

practically, so even a simple ‘length’ measurement is an important ‘fact’ in this contest.

Your solution will only be based on a design for the wheelchair depended person and making them able to

ride a public bus (BRTC china bus) from the footpath. You will find an innovative solution and you will

prove it as practically implementable in our country. In different rounds of this contest you will have to

make your idea more mature and feasible and you will have to provide necessary prototypes of your design

to prove that practically.

Contest Details

Solution/design concepts can come from any perception like mechanical, mechatronics, civil engg,

architectural and so on. Contests’ details are given below -

  Primary Round

In this round, you w ill have to just illustrate your solution in written m anner. Put som e technical detailsand m ention the feasibility.

1.  In this round you will have to submit an abstract of your total project plan to complete

 your registration.

2.   Abstract will be no longer than 4 pages. [Use regular fonts, size & line spacing,]

3.   You will have to explain your entire concept in this abstract and the technical aspects in

brief.

4.   You will have to evaluate your concept/project from the perspective of Bangladesh.

5.   You can modify an existing system for ‘Bangladesh’ or you can evaluate a unique system

and if you propose for an existing system then you will have to make it efficient.

6.   You can use 3D sketch, relevant pictures or any other graphical content related to your

plan. But you will have to mention the sources.

Selected (number depends on the participation) entries will be qualified for the ‘Group Stage Round’.

  Group Stage Round

In this round you will have to give a presentation on the project plan. [Venue will be declared by

the contest organizing team].

Your presentation will have to include the followings -

Brief of your entire project plan.

  Engineering Details.

  3d Simulation/ 3D prototype in any platform (AutoCAD, 3DMax etc) & Circuit

simulations (preferably in proteus.) and mechanical simulation. (if necessary)

  Engineering drawings (if necessary)

Other necessary technical stuffs that requires proving your design implementable.

Judgment will be based on –

  Innovation.

  Feasibility

Relevancy of Bangladeshi Road Transport System (Public Bus & Bus Stopage).

  Cost Efficiency.  Engineering Efficiency.

  Uniqueness of Idea.

  Implementation easement.

   Adoptability.

  Sustainability

  Field Trip & Grooming Session

Probably you will have to do nothing here but gathering practical information. Attending field trip

& grooming session is must for all of the qualifying teams. [Field Trip & Grooming Session will be

arranged by Contest organizing team].

  Final Round

In this round you will have to give a presentation on the project plan and you will also have to

showcase the complete prototype/model of your design/concept/project. Assume that in this round

you will practically implement your design in a system and based on this assumption develop your

prototype/model.

Your presentation will have to include the followings -

Brief of your entire project plan.

  Engineering Details.

3d Simulation/ 3D prototype in any platform (Autocad, 3DMax etc) & Circuit simulations

(preferably in proteus.) and mechanical simulation.

Engineering drawings (if necessary)   A Complete prototype model

Judgment will be based on –

  Innovation.

  Model/prototype making

  Feasibility

Relevancy of Bangladeshi Road Transport System (Public Bus & Bus Stoppage).

  Cost Efficiency.

  Engineering Efficiency.

  Uniqueness of Idea.

  Implementation easement.

   Adoptability.

Notes:

Typical ‘Ramp’ design is not encouraged in this competition as it is not easily implementable in

Bangladesh. But, still you can design a suitable ramp and you will have to ensure that it will beefficiently implementable.

Your main target is to move a wheelchair from bus stoppage to bus and you are free to design any

engineering solution regarding this case. You are not encouraged modify the bus in large scale.
