Did you know how the mountain bike came to be?

In the early seventies a small wild bunch of cycle

fanatics hit on the amazing idea to shoot down

the gravel tracks of Mount Tamalpais in California

on old cruisers with fat balloon wheels. As their

robust steel steeds were extremely heavy these

first mountain bikers were naturally downhillers

through and through.

The off-road fan community that has developed

since then led to the design of ever stronger

bikes suitable for off-road and uphill terrain. And

thus begun the unstoppable transformation of

the mountain bike from niche to mass following.

One of its co-founders was Ben Lawee. He set up

UNIVEGA in 1970 and turned his small bike shop

in Long Beach, California into a globally

successful enterprise. By the way today’s

legendary UNIVEGA Alpina Sport is one of the

first production produced mountain bike there

ever was.

Ben Lawee’s slogan RIDE IT YOUR WAY precisely

captures what mountain biking is all about: the

freedom to go your own way. This is because

mountain bikers today may no longer be a small

community, but they are just as wild as ever –

always in search of the ultimate kick. And it is for

these people that UNIVEGA builds bikes that are

innovative, safe and with technology, design and

performance that pushes the envelope. Perfect

partners uphill, downhill and cross country.

UPCT has stood for strong cross country sport

since 2006, and is well on its way to becoming

Europe’s most successful mountain bike team.

In the 2011 season, the team showed its qualities

in mountain biking (XC, marathon, 24-hour and

stage races), cross and road races – with 54 wins,

30 second-place and 18 third-place finishes.

The interim balance midway through 2012:

24 wins, 12 second-place and 11 third-place

finishes. With the strong performances of its

riders on UNIVEGA bikes, the UPCT is continuing

its successes in both the domestic and inter -

national arenas.

INTERNAL CABLE ROUTINGEven the most appealing frame design suffers if its lines are interrupted by cabling. The UNIVEGA top models with ICR techno-logy are therefore characterized by lines that are routed inside theframe. Apart from the enhanced wear resistance, it produces a seductively clear, minimalist silhouette. Technology and style inperfect harmony.

TAPERED HEADTUBEThe headtube that flares outwards towards the bottom enablesUNIVEGA to kill two birds with one stone: achieving weight reduction AND the highest possible stiffness. The considerablybroader bearing ensures high stability and can offer more resistance against generated forces. The intelligent, conically formed headtube design makes a style statement.

PRESS FIT 92 mmThe same bottom bracket technology principle as the BB30, a different manufacturing approach: here, too, the bearing is pressed into a previously prepared frame - however, in the processit is sheathed in an additional plastic capsule. This ensures easierand more canting-proof processing and facilitates maintenance. 92 mm is the entire width of the inner bearing following the pressing process.

FAST RESPONSE SYSTEMThe FRS system reacts quickly and sensitively to the smallest impacts. The kinetically perfect positioning of the damper on theframe means that the FRS will impress the rider with the finest response behavior as it absorbs impacts from the road surface.The best cycling performance in every situation has become abasic characteristic of a UNIVEGA Fully.

REAR AXLE SYSTEMProblems with the fine positioning of the rear brake disc when dipping the rear triangle are a thing of the past – at least at UNIVEGA. The floating axle in this rear axle system holds the rearwheel in the exact same position. The entire rear triangle becomesmore torsion resistant and the existing torsion forces more manageable. With a system like this, even the hardest trail becomes a welcome challenge.

DIRECT MOUNT A direct mount front derailleur is the ideal basis for the highest degree of shifting comfort. Here, the otherwise standard quick release lever on the seat stay is replaced by a thread, which is aperfect fit and is integrated into the frame. Due to the shortercable linkage, the front derailleur shifts extraordinarily quickly andprecisely between gears. The compact design saves weight andspace. Moreover, it allows more freedom in the design of the frameconstruction.

POST MOUNT With the post-mount brake retainer, the fixing screws for the brakecalliper are aligned in the direction of travel rather than parallel tothe wheel axle. In this way, the braking forces can be optimally absorbed and transmitted to the frame. The new UNIVEGA post-mount brakes are extremely stable despite their low weight. Another advantage: Adjusting the disc brakes is now even quicker,easier and safer.

XXL-BIKESFor those people who also like to enjoy their life and not miss outon anything, even if they don’t meet the kilo norm. Reinforcedframe (also in 64 and 70 frame sizes) and components that fulfillthe special damping and load requirements also enable heavyweight champions and 6-foot men to confidently tackle everyroute.

TECHNOLOGY MEETS DESIGN UNIVEGA bikes are developed and manufactured to meet consciously traditional quality requirements

and ultramodern technological standards. Their paint finish is one of the world’s most modern and

environmentally compatible in the entire sector: every coat is dried individually in the kiln, the decor

typical of the specific model gleams under a brilliant indestructible powder top coating. Successful

design is, in the end, the visiting card of quality and high-tech.

INCREDIBLY STRONG MATERIAL Anybody pushing himself to the limits on the trail, needs a bike that can keep up with the pace and

that he can rely on 100 per cent. No compromises allowed and least of all in technology or material.
