16 June

Demand across England's High Streets, retail parks and shopping centres surged on Monday as some shops reopened after a three-month lockdown.

All shops in England are now allowed to open, but with strict safety measures.

"Footfall has risen by more than we anticipated, but it was certainly helped by the weather, which made queuing a more pleasurable experience," said one store manager.

Jaydee Darrock, was one of the first inside Primark's Birmingham store after queuing from about 7:00 am. She described it as "surprisingly calm".

There were also big queues outside the Nike store in Central London, although some complained there had been a lack of social distancing.

In Manchester people waited for almost an hour outside Primark, TK Maxx and Foot Locker, although elsewhere demand was more subdued.

Although food shops, pharmacies, banks and other essential retailers have stayed open, vast swathes of the High Street, from bookshops to clothes outlets, have been closed since 23 March.

Have you been shopping this week?

Yes, I have. No, I haven’t

What did you buy?

What are people shopping for?

Shantel Brown, 35, went shopping in Milton Keynes with her daughter Tee, who is 16.

Shantel said: "I bought nightwear and baby clothes because Primark was open. I'm pregnant and I've been waiting to get some baby stuff.

"Everyone keeps their distance. They've got sanitiser at the entrance. As long as we've got our masks on, we're fine."

Tee added: "I bought tops, shorts and summer clothes.”

Can you try on clothes and shoes in the shop?

In most clothes shops, fitting rooms are closed. Bookshops, including

Waterstones, intend to put items in quarantine if browsed but not bought,

while some jewellers are introducing ultraviolet boxes that can

decontaminate items in minutes.

Coronavirus: Eight things that have kept us going in lockdown

By Lucy Rodgers BBC News 9 May 2020

Coronavirus has forced people around the world to change the way they live their lives. In Britain we have been spending most of our time at home, attempting to educate our own children and leaving the house only for essential reasons. What has kept us going? Here are eight things British people have been doing to cope with life in lockdown.

1. Socialising virtually

Top of the list of things people say are helping them is staying in touch with friends and family.

Zoom says its global daily users went from around 10 million in December last year to a massive 300 million in April,

2. Watching films and using streaming

services

This is the second most popular way Britons have been coping. Almost six in 10 people (57%) say they are watching films or using streaming services during lockdown. The same survey also reveals families are watching more TV together

3. Spending more time with the people we live with - and helping neighbours

More than half of Britons (54%) say spending more time with the people in their household has helped them cope.

Community spirit has also grown, with eight in 10 adults (80%) saying they think people are doing more to help others than before the pandemic began.

4. Exercising outside and in

About half of us (52%) find exercising outside helps us cope, while almost one in three of us (31%) find indoor workouts beneficial. A quarter (25%) of people have upped their activity levels in lockdown. The popularity of virtual classes has soared.

Such exercise is not only keeping people fit though, experts say, it can help us deal with the crisis itself.

5. Cooking, gardening and reading

More than four in 10 Britons are turning to cooking, gardening or reading (45%, 42%, 44%) - or all three.

Many people are baking. There was a 92% increase in purchasing of flour in the four weeks to 22 March. That's an extra 2.1 million people who bought flour in those four weeks compared with the year before.

6. Doing DIY and learning something new

With some Britons in lockdown now having more time on their hands, almost a third (32%) are using those extra hours to do DIY tasks and more than one in 10 (14%) are learning something new.

7. Spending more on food and shopping locally

New lockdown routines mean Britons are also changing shopping habits, placing more importance on food and cooking at home.

People are also turning to their local shops to buy essentials.

8. Spending more on home comforts - such as potpourri, scented candles and logs for fires

People have been purchasing comfort items –

For example, sales of scented candles and potpourri were up 36% in the four weeks to 22 March compared with last year.

YouGov polling suggests fewer than one in 10 people (9%) actually want life to return to "normal" after the coronavirus outbreak is over.
