Coral Gables campus adopts restricted smoking policy beginning September 1, 2011 If you were checking e-mails on August 22nd, you may have caught President Shalala’s announcement stating UM is launching the first step in a three-year initiative to make our Coral Gables campus smoke free. If you missed it, mark your calendar- starting September 1, 2011, smoking will only be permitted in designated areas on University property. This new policy began with a student-led initiative and is backed by our Student Government, Graduate Student Association, and Student Bar Association. A recent survey of 2,186 students found that 59 percent agree or strongly agree to have designated smoking areas throughout the campus, while 63 percent agree or strongly agree on having a completely smoke-free campus. We will also be joining our colleagues at the Miller School of Medicine campus, which has been entirely smoke free since March 2010. The UM community is committed to creating a healthy living and working environment. Our president stated, “We’re doing this for our students, co-workers, visitors, families, friends, and you. Let’s all live smoke free.” If you’re ready to Quit Smoking, we’re ready to help! Join UM’s FREE 6 week BeSmokeFree program and get all the help you’ll need. The program offers traditional, complementary and alternative tobacco edu-cation and treatment services to help smokers learn how to be smoke free for life! FREE nicotine patches, lozenges and nicotine replacement gum are also available. Our program is FREE and open to everyone inside and outside the UM community. Quitting smoking has never been easier! You can reach the BSF office by calling 305-243-7606, or check them out online at www.wellness.med.miami.edu Additional information regarding UM’s new policy, including a map with the designated smoking loca-tions, is available at www.miami.edu/smokefree.
