Senior Mwambo The Senior Mwambo is an African rite of passage ceremony that marks the transition of black graduates from their lives at the University of Miami to advanced education and professional careers. This ceremony was estab- lished in 1992 through the vision and love of a very dynamic and caring international student from Malawi, East Africa; Mr. Patrick A. Masala. The term “Mwambo” literally means ceremonial rite of passage. It is Chichewa and comes to us from Malawi, East Africa where it was founded. The Senior Mwambo is an African rite of passage ceremony designed to recognize the accomplishments of our black graduates and their families. It is a celebration of the transition from one stage of life to the next. This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 2:00pm in Gusman Hall. New Pell Grant Eligibility Limits Due to new legislation, beginning during the 2012-2013 academic year, student’s that are eligible to receive the Federal Pell Grant will be limited to 12 full-time semesters of eligibility. This change applies to all Federal Pell Grant eligible students. It is not limited to students who receive their First Federal Pell Grant on or after 2008-2009 award year. We will calcu- late the Pell Grant duration for a student by adding together each annual percentages of a student’s scheduled award that was actually disbursed to the student. For example, a student whose 2011-2012 Federal Pell Grant award was $5,550, but who received $2775 because she was only enrolled for one semester, will have used 50% of that award year’s schedules award. Similarly, a student who was enrolled three quarter time (9 credits) for the 2011-2012 award year would have used 75% of their scheduled award.
