Sally Ride was born on May 26, 1951, in Los Angeles, California. As a young girl, she wanted to be a tennis player, and she played tennis professionally as a teenager. She finished college in 1977 and decided that she wanted to be an astronaut. That year, over 8,000 men and women wanted to enter the space program (NASA). Only 35 got in. Six were women, and one was Sally Ride.

In 1983, she took her first space flight, and became the first american woman in space. Sally left NASA in 1987. She now teaches at Stanford University.
