Reflection The Three Wise Men in today’s Gospel reading are perfect examples of stewards. They traveled from afar to pay homage to the Christ Child. They brought their gifts to Him as a way to show their homage. We, too, have been given gifts that we can present before the Lord and use for the betterment of others.
Living Stewardship - Pillar of Service In today’s second reading, St. Paul reminds us that we have been given the gift of the Faith to go out and spread the Good News. We are in church today because of someone who spread the Word to us. Let us be at God’s service and spread the Word to someone else this week.
LIVING STEWARDSHIP
Sacrificing for One Another We demonstrate Living STEWARDSHIP in sharing our
blessings through our weekly offertory gi .
W O G Include C E , O G C O
The Weekly Offertory Collection ideally is enough income to meet all parish needs. The Average Weekly Gift is $12.75. A weekly offering today offsets less than 44% of the necessary income; thus the need for more funds including annual giving (CMA), parish special event fees, parish program fees, along with bequests and miscellaneous donations to make it possible for us to continue to do the good work of our Catholic Church.
Due to bulletin deadlines, weekly offertory totals are not available .
Scriptural Reflec on for the Week “Seeing the star, they [the Magi] rejoiced with very great joy, and going into the house they saw the child with Mary, his mother, and falling down they worshipped him.” (see Ma hew 2:1-12) It’s a beau ful, some mes even exhilara ng experience to look up at the vast expanse of sky at night and see the stars hanging like lights from heaven to illuminate the darkness of night. Are the stars there even if we can’t see them because of bad weather condi ons, the clouds, etc.? They sure are but we are prevented from seeing them. We know and should believe in the One Light, Star, hanging from Heaven that helps us see the truth about the meaning of our lives. But what o en pre-vents us from acknowledging this Light, Jesus, are clouds and storms of our own making caused by sin, selfishness, and self-centeredness. The result? We don’t enter His house. We re-main enclosed and encased in our own dwelling. Instead of walking where the Light, Jesus, is and leads we instead withdraw inward where the darkness of sin lurks. Many people today don’t want to enter the House where the Child Jesus is lying in wait. Many don’t want to worship and fall down before Him. But if Kings and Magi are willing to why not us? Next me you are wondering at a beau ful night me sky arranged with thou-sands of stars and lights, may it remind you of the one who put those stars in place. And then, may we go to His House, and kneel before Him present in the Tabernacle and seen in the Monstrance in the Adora on Chapel and fall down on our knees and worship the one who is Light sent from Heaven to Earth, Jesus Christ who is King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
Thank you, Father Lopes We offer a word of apprecia on and gra tude to Father Tony for his me with us these past several months. He returns to his home in Goa, India today. He generously assisted while Father Allan was recupera ng. We wish him a safe journey home and offer him our prayers.

Pope: ‘never look at your brothers and sisters in need
with condescension' By Linda Bordoni
Pope Francis receives groups of French pilgrims dedicated to the Devotion of Divine Mercy saying there is no human poverty that God does not want to reach, touch and help.
Addressing a group of French pilgrims associated to the devo-tion of Divine Mercy, Pope Francis on Friday thanked them for their witness to the world of the joy of mercy.
Divine Mercy is a devotion to God’s infinite mercy that was promulgated by St. Faustina Kowalska in Poland, and later to the Universal Church by Pope St. John Paul II.
The pilgrims received in the Vatican belong to ecclesial asso-ciations, congregations and movements whose different char-isms include closeness and assistance to the poor, to mi-grants, to the sick, to prisoners, to people with disabilities.
Beautiful diversity The Pope praised what he called their “beautiful diversity” that highlights the fact that “there is no human poverty that God does not want to reach, touch and help.”
The groups are in Rome on a pilgrimage taking them to differ-ent shrines dedicated to Divine Mercy, and the Pope ex-pressed his appreciation for the fact that there are many in the Church in France who, with the support and encouragement of their pastors, proclaim the mercy of the Lord.
“Mercy is, in fact, the ultimate and supreme act with which God comes to meet us and which opens our hearts to the hope of being loved forever, whatever our poverty, whatever our sin,” he said.
The Pope said that God's love for us is not an abstract word, it is visible and tangible in Jesus Christ.
Jubilee of Mercy Referring to the 2015 Bull of Indiction with which he called for the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, he said “I hoped that, in the perspective of the new evangelization which the world so badly needs, ‘the theme of mercy’ would be proposed again and again with new enthusiasm and renewed pastoral action.”
“It is absolutely essential for the Church and for the credibility of her message that she herself live and testify to mercy. Her language and her gestures must transmit mercy, so as to touch the hearts of all people and inspire them once more to find the road that leads to the Father,” he quoted. Urging those present to continue to find ways to meet each other to pray and share, to share their difficulties and

God of all heaven and earth, From the breath of your love came the crea on of the world.
We are amazed at the vast beauty of the night sky and at the in mate nature of the love You have for us Your children.
Be our daily star. Guiding our lives to search for kingdom love. May we always follow your light of truth in all that we do, Forever trus ng, hoping and believing in your word. Li our eyes tonight to see your eternal life shining brightly, Leading us home. Amen.

Happy New Year to all and especially those who contribute so generously to the St. Vincent De Paul food pantry. This weekend we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. The magi followed the light and found the Savior of the world. May Jesus be our light so that we are open to all cultures and races and may we faithfully offer Christ the gold of living faith, the incense of our worship, and the myrrh of compas-sion. Don’t forget the Poor Box.

The Frist Epiphany
Reflection by — Saverio Grosso
T he word Epiphany means “manifestation” or “showing forth.” Historically several moments in Christ’s early life
and ministry have been celebrated as “epiphanies,” including his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by John, and his first miracle at Cana. In today’s Gospel, St. Matthew tells us that after Jesus’ birth, an event loaded with significance for the whole world took place. “Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,” looking for a king who had been recently born, the “king of the Jews.” Jesus was born in obscurity. Only the lowly shepherds recognized him at his birth. So, who were these wise men who found their way to Bethlehem to pay homage to the newborn King of Israel? They were not Israelites, but foreigners, so what were they looking for?
The “magi” were likely astrologers, considered at that time to be “wise men” because of their lifelong commitment to studying the skies and finding meaning in the cosmos. They probably came from Persia, and they possibly were part of a school of wise men over which the Jewish prophet, Daniel, had been given authority.
During the Exodus (about 1500 B.C.), as Israel was making her way back to the Promised Land from bondage in Egypt, one of the kings who felt threatened by their advance commissioned a “seer” to pro-nounce a curse on the Israelites. Instead, he was moved by God to bless them, and was given a prophecy about the Messiah: “I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not nigh: a star shall come forth out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel” (Num 24:17). So, hundreds of years after Daniel lived, the magi from the east, upon seeing an unusually bright star in the night sky, knew they needed to make the long trek to Jerusalem to pay homage to their newborn king. The proph-ecy was being fulfilled!
However, not everyone was happy because there was another part of the prophecy about the rising star that described “Edom will be dispossessed” (Num 24:18). Herod was a non-Jew, an Edomite who took over the throne in Jerusalem. No wonder he was worried! The wise men knew where to find him, but also knew Herod’s real inten-tions. They likely knew the repercussions of all that was happening around them, yet in their thirst for knowledge of God, the wise men from the East willingly left everything. In their diligent search they were led to the source of true knowledge - to Jesus Christ, the Light and Wis-dom of God.
When they found the newborn King they humbly worshiped him and gave him gifts fitting for a king. We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a foreshadowing of Jesus’ role in salvation - Gold is pre-sented as representative of Jesus’ kingship. Frankincense is a sym-bol of his divinity because priests burned the substance in the Tem-ple. Myrrh, which was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus’ death.
In the encounter of the wise men with Jesus we see the plan of God to give his only Son as King and Savior, not just for the Jewish people but for all the nations as well. Jesus came that all may find true and lasting peace with God.
Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you for bringing salvation to all the nations. May the gospel of salvation be proclaimed to every nation today and to every person on the face of the earth. Help me to be a good witness of the joy of the gospel to all I meet.

Devotion to the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (which is Jesus Himself) is a way of life given to us by Mary to counter the greatest attack of Satan ever against mankind and particularly against families. It brings about the greatest outpouring of grace since the Incarnation and blinds Satan so that he loses his influ-ence over our families and communi-ties and they can begin to hear God’s call.

experiences, as well as their joys and thanksgiving, the Pope invited those present to keep this mercy of which they bear witness alive.
Apostles of Mercy “May the sometimes very demanding and tiring fulfilment of your charitable activities never stifle the breath of tenderness and compassion with which they must be animated,” he said.
He reminded them never to look at a brother or sister with condescension, but with understanding, appreciation, re-spect and love, because he said, “one can only be authentic apostles of mercy if one is profoundly aware that one has been the object of mercy on the part of the Father”.
Contemplate the crib Finally, in this time of preparation for Christmas, the Pope proposed the contemplation of the crib: “It is an invitation to feel, to touch the poverty that the Son of God chose for Him-self in His Incarnation.”
Implicitly, he concluded, it is an appeal to follow Jesus on the path of humility which leads from the manger in Bethlehem to the Cross: an appeal to meet and serve Him with mercy to-wards our most needy brothers and sisters.
