Cruise Control

At 220,000 gross registered tons, the Oasis

of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean

Cruises Ltd., is 40 percent larger than any

other cruise ship ever built. Providing fire

protection for a vessel of this size required

a seasoned project management team and

fire safety solutions that meet the highest

industry standards, while also minimizing

space and weight requirements. Today,

the Oasis of the Seas — and its 6,000 pas-

sengers and 2,100 crew members — are

protected by UTC Fire & Security’s Marioff

HI-FOG® water mist protection system, as

well as the Autronica AutroSafe® interactive

fire detection system and AutroMaster®

integrated safety and emergency manage-

ment system, which was developed in close

collaboration with Royal Caribbean.

In the Pipeline UTC Fire & Security serves the energy sector by partnering with major

Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) contractors worldwide, to design fire safety

systems to protect oil pipelines, gas fields, power plants, and turbines around the world.

UTC Fire & Security’s Det-Tronics® flame and gas detectors monitor pipelines around the

world for unwanted fires and gas leaks to ensure uninterrupted energy transmission. In the Middle East, several UTC

Fire & Security businesses — including Silvani, Sides, Kidde Fire Fighting, and Angus Fire Engineering — provide fire

trucks, monitors, pumps, water delivery systems, and foam-making equipment to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

“As an EPC contractor, we rely on our suppliers to deliver high-quality products on-time so that we can meet our

mist fire protection system produces a

fine mist that results in minimal water

damage when compared to conventional

sprinkler systems, making it ideal for data

centers and other applications with deli-

cate assets. HI-FOG® has been tested

in more full-scale fire tests than any other

water mist fire protection system, with

more than 6,000 successful tests to date.

Every year, UTC Fire & Security produces more

than 20 million smoke and carbon monoxide

(CO) alarms to help protect families around the

globe. CO is a colorless, odorless poison gas

produced by fossil fuel-burning appliances,

and can be fatal within minutes at high concen-

trations. UTC Fire & Security promotes safety

standards by championing legislative efforts

worldwide, in partnership with health and

safety advocates, firefighters, and lawmakers.

Tunnel Safety

Fast, effective fire suppression is critical

for roadway tunnels, so it’s no surprise

that UTC Fire & Security’s Marioff HI-FOG®

water mist fire protection system is grow-

ing in popularity with these applications.

The A86 West tunnel in Paris, part of the

A86 super-ring road, was the first large

European tunnel to be protected with an

active fire protection system. This 10-kilo-

meter tunnel, which links Rueil-Malmaison

and Versailles, is protected by HI-FOG®

and represents the largest water mist fire

protection system ever built. Helsinki’s

underground service network, which

expanded the city’s pedestrian zones, is

also protected by HI-FOG® — marking

Finland’s first automatic tunnel fire protec-

tion system.

Commercial Buildings Data Centers Education Energy Financial Services Government Healthcare Heritage Buildings Hospitality Manufacturing Marine Mining Petrochemical, Oil and Gas Residential Retail Transportation

UTC Fire & Security’s clean agent fire suppression systems help protect critical

high-value assets from the threat of fire and minimize downtime and cleanup

costs, while addressing environmental considerations. One example is the

company’s extensive range of clean agent fire suppression systems designed

for use with 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid. This solution has a zero

Ozone Depletion Factor (ODP), the lowest Global Warming Potential (GWP) of

a chemical-based clean agent, and an atmospheric lifetime of only five days.

Airport Protection

UTC Fire & Security’s products and serv-

ices are installed at some of the world’s

major airports — from Dublin, London, and

Zurich, to Washington, D.C., Budapest,

and Johannesburg. When Cathay Pacific

needed to protect its cargo terminal in Hong

Kong, it turned to UTC Fire & Security for

the installation of fire detection and alarm

systems, a gas suppression and deluge

system, and a high sensitivity smoke detec-

tion system. And for tarmacs, UTC Fire

& Security provides the world’s leading

aviation fire protection, from advanced

firefighter training to trucks capable of

laying foam for emergency landings.

Going with the Flow

When the U.K.Highways Agency needed

a solution to address increased conges-

tion, UTC Fire & Security responded with

a groundbreaking integrated network to

monitor and manage traffic. The Agency’s

control centers are now networked with a

Chubb monitoring station and CCTV

system, supported by more than 800

cameras that supply real-time information.

This technology has resulted in better use

of existing road space, as Active Traffic

Management uses integrated electronic

signs to direct drivers during times of peak

congestion. Overall, the traffic manage-

ment system has led to improved efficiency

and safety, as well as a reduction in fuel

emissions from idling vehicles.

On the Right Track

When the Shanghai Metro began its

extensive expansion to meet increased

demand during the 2010 World Expo, it

called upon UTC Fire & Security to design

and install a fire safety system. The com-

pany’s Shanghai Ken business supplied

and installed fire detection and alarm,

access control, and HVAC control systems

for a total of 33 stations, control rooms, and

two parking lots. This extensive project

makes travel safer and more comfortable

for both Shanghai residents and visitors

alike.
