What are Service Academies?

• The United States Service Academies are Federal Academies for the undergraduate education and training of Commissioned Officers for the United States Armed Forces.

United States Military Academy United States Naval Academy United States Coast Guard Academy United States Merchant Marine Academy United States Air Force Academy

• Students at Service academies incur a five year active duty commitment, and if in the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps have an additional three year reserve commitment.

While students at the academies, all Cadets and Midshipmen receive free room, board and medical care, and pay no tuition. Students at all of the academies except the Merchant Marine Academy are paid approximately $10,000 per year.

The latest estimate for the value/cost of a service academy education is $285,000.

Admissions•Admissions criteria include: High academic performance Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) Athletics and extracurricular activities Leadership positions, community involvement Work experiences • Must be U. S. citizen between 17 and 22 years old upon entrance • Must be unmarried with no legal obligation to support a child, and be of good moral character

• Candidates for admission also must undergo a physical aptitude test as well as a medical examination demonstrating they are qualified to be commissioned as an officer

Cadets and Midshipmen are persons of integrity: They stand for that which is right.

All of the Service Academies have Honor Codes. With very minor variations, they all provide “A cadet/midshipman does not lie, cheat or steal, nor tolerate those who do.”

Most first duty assignments as a newly commissioned ensign are at sea as a deck watch officer aboard a Coast Guard Cutter.

A limited number of new ensigns are assigned to flight school and a few others go to larger land bases, but the vast majority goes to sea.

SUMMER SEMINARS

West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy all offer Summer Seminar programs in June to students who have just completed their junior year of high school. – Superior SAT/ACT scores and high school performance– Demonstrated achievement and leadership in athletics and

extracurricular activities– Physically fit and in good health – Positive attitude, self-disciplined, and of good moral

character

Applications for Summer Seminar and admission to the academies open in December of junior year of high school. Selections are made in January/February.

Nominations

Applicants to all service academies, except the UnitedStates Coast Guard Academy, are required to obtain aNomination to the school. Nominations may be madeby Senators, Representatives, the President and theVice President. Applicants to the Coast Guard Academy compete in adirect nation-wide competitive process that has noby-state limitations.

Service Academy Preparatory Schools

Strengthen the academic potential of candidates. Admission is restricted to those Students who have applied to an academy, failed initially to qualify academically, but who have demonstrated ability to qualify with additional academic preparation.

Selected “fully qualified” candidates receive partial scholarships from alumni associations
