GEORGRAPHY

• By total area (water as well as land), the United States is either slightly larger or smaller than the People's Republic of China, making it the world's third or fourth largest country. China and the United States are smaller than Russia and Canada in total area, but are larger than Brazil. By land area only (exclusive of waters), the United States is the world's third largest country, after Russia and China, with Canada in fourth.

• Due to its large size and wide range of geographic features, the United States contains examples of nearly every global climate. The climate is temperate in most areas, subtropical in the Deep South, tropical in Hawaii and southern Florida, polar in Alaska, semiarid in the Great Plains west of the 100th meridian, Mediterranean in coastal California and arid in the Great Basin

CINEMA

• The cinema of the United States, often generally referred to as Hollywood, has had a profound effect on cinema across the world since the early 20th century. Its history is sometimes separated into four main periods: the silent film era, classical Hollywood cinema, New Hollywood, and the contemporary period. While the French Lumière Brothers are generally credited with the birth of modern cinema, it is indisputably American cinema that soon became the most dominant force in an emerging industry. Since the 1920s, the American film industry has grossed more money every year than that of any other country.

THE ARTS

MUSIC •The music of the United States reflects the country's multi-ethnic population through a diverse array of styles. It is a mixture of West African traditions on the one hand and Irish and Scottish traditions with the later addition of Mexican and Cuban elements. Among the country's most internationally-renowned genres are hip hop, blues, country, rhythm and blues, ragtime, jazz, barbershop, pop, experimental, techno, and rock and roll. The United States has the world's largest music market and its music is heard around the world. Since the beginning of the 20th century, some forms of American popular music have gained a near global audience.

EDUCATION• In most states, children are required to attend school from the age of six or seven until they turn 18

but some states allow students to leave school at 16 or 17. About 12% of children are enrolled in parochial or nonsectarian private schools. Just over 2% of children are homeschooled. The U.S. spends more on education per student than any nation in the world, spending more than $11,000 per elementary student in 2010 and more than $12,000 per high school student . Some 80% of U.S. college students attend public universities. The United States has many competitive private and public institutions of higher education. According to prominent international rankings, 13 or 15 American colleges and universities are ranked among the top 20 in the world

SPORTS• Sports are an important part of the culture of the United States. Three of the nation's five

most popular team sports were developed in North America: American football, basketball and ice hockey, whereas soccer was developed in England and baseball was developed in both Ireland and the United States. The four major professional sports leagues in the United States are Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), and the National Hockey League (NHL)

LEISURE TIME

• Americans plan on doing more jogging, but their interest in playing ice hockey is on the decline. Active vacations such as swimming and hiking are on the rise, but Americans’ interest in racquetball and surfing is not as great as it once was. Americans are using the Internet more as a leisure activity, but they also have an increased desire to remain physically fit.
