S ince the inception of our Foundation in 1944,we have always provided deserving students an opportunity to enter the Naval Academy via our preparatory school program. This is a need-based financial assistance program and has sponsored more than 3,500 deserving candidates to the Naval Academy over the years.Today, there are almost 300 Foundation graduates within the Brigade of Midshipmen. Equally important, and in consonance with our mission to maintain the Naval Academy’s Athletic Excellence,we are providing critical financial support to the club, intramural and varsity athletic programs. Our Foundation, which includes Trustees, Associate Trustees and Foundation Parents, was an integral part of the $250M+ comprehensive campaign to support the U.S.Naval Academy. In fact, our small group alone contributed more than $41M towards the campaign goal, thereby continuing our tradition of relevance and responsiveness to the Naval Academy. To preserve this tradition of support, an Athletic Excellence Fund was established.Athletic Excellence is now our primary fund raising focus going forward;it’s the lifeblood of this organization. We have asked all of our Trustees to support this important program. The Classes of 1970 and 1980 have also included the Athletic Excellence Fund as part of their ongoing class fundraising projects. It is my sad duty to report thepassing of seven fellow Trusteesduring the past year:

■ CDR James Carrington ’48Trustee since 1968Died 6/1/2009

■ VADM James Calvert ’43 Trustee since 2007Died 6/3/2009

■ ADM Ralph W. Cousins ’37Trustee since 1977Died 8/5/2009

■ Mary Ellen HanleyTrustee since 1980Died 8/17/2009

■ CDR Garland Rex Kilbourn ’50Trustee since 1996Died 10/20/2008

■ RADM Steve QuigleyTrustee since 1978Died 3/3/2009

■ Mr. Fred Schnurr ’44Trustee since 1988Died 1/29/09

It should be noted that all six ofthese Trustees were long-timesupporters of the Naval Academy.Admiral Jim Calvert was also aformer Superintendent of the NavalAcademy from 1968-1972.

On a more positive note, therenaissance of Navy athleticscontinues unabated. If you havevisited Annapolis recently, you have

seen the extraordinary transformationthat has taken place at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. After a complete 3-year renovation,it’s now recognized as the mostbeautiful mid-sized college footballstadium in the country! Moreimportantly, it is a fitting memorial tothe sacrifice made by our Navy andMarine Corps personnel who haveparticipated in each of our nation’swars and continue today in the globalwar on terror. The Wesley BrownFieldhouse was dedicated and openedlast year and houses an indoor trackand foul weather practice facilities formajor teams. The Brigade SportsComplex, across the river by the golfcourse, also opened last year andincludes indoor/outdoor tenniscourts, fitness center and workoutfacilities, indoor golf facilities, a proshop and also a new ice hockey arena. This year the crew house,HubbardHall, will finally undergo renovation. All of these projects will greatlyenhance the world class athleticfacilities offered at the NavalAcademy. Our Midshipmen deservenothing less.

Again, our Foundation purpose isto remain relevant and responsive tothe needs of the Naval Academy.Wehave achieved that by increasing ourfinancial support for Navy athleticprograms over the past several years. We have also increased the amount oftuition assistance for each of our prepschool students. Finally, our Trusteeshave stepped up and are involved in awide range of volunteer projects toassist Navy athletic programs andeducate our Midshipmen athletesabout the rich heritage and traditionof which they are now a part.

And finally, I thank each of youfor your personal support. Our effortshave made a significant impact on

overall athletic excellence within theBrigade and will continue to do so inthe future. At our spring meeting wewere faced with a decision.Do westep up to meet the $400,000 deficitneeded by our Director of Athleticsto balance his budget or do weinform the Superintendent that wecannot fulfill the request. We chose tostep up! Since then we have raised$295,000,which is 74 percent of ourgoal and, more importantly we are at75 percent participation. I am nowconfident we shall move the goalwith 100 percent participation.Thank you!

I look forward to seeing you andworking with you throughout the year.

This has been another outstandingyear for our Athletic &

Scholarships Program. I’ve reallyenjoyed and am privileged to workwith so many wonderful families andcandidates, our own AlumniAssociation and Foundation, as wellas the staffs of the Naval AcademyAdmissions and Athletic departments.

We held our spring and fallmeetings and each was attended bymany of our 250 activeTrustees andtheir spouses. Our focus at bothevents was staying relevant to theNaval Academy and promoting theAthletic Excellence Fund and theprep school program. While we aredoing very well overall,we still needyour help in our mission to supportboth important programs.Theinformation provided below givesyou an idea of the wonderful impactwe’ve had over the past year.

Athletic SupportAn important part of the mission is,of course, the Foundation’s monetarysupport to the Naval Academy andNAAA for the varsity, club andintramural sports programs.Much of the renovation work at the Navy-Marine Corps MemorialStadium was funded by our

organization. We are also committedto keeping the current footballcoaching staff intact. With KenNiumatalolo as the head coach andan aggressive but realistic schedulethis year,we have a great opportunityto extend our current run ofsuccessful seasons and to again retainthe Commander-in-Chief ’s Trophy. That coaching staff stability is criticalto the success of the program.

During the past year,we providedalmost $1.6M in private grants forrecruiting, team and coaches’ travel, trophies, team equipment, radiobroadcasting, athletic facilities andannual coaches and Midshipmenathletic awards. We are committed to provide more than $1.4 millionduring the upcoming year to not justthe major sports but all varsity, club andintramural teams at the Naval Academy.

In just the last several years, ourunique organization has contributedmore than $47 million to the NavalAcademy, the preparatory schoolprogram and Navy athletics.Wecould not accomplish this withoutthe generous contributions each yearfrom our Trustees,Associate Trustees,

From the Executive Directorparents and friends of the NavalAcademy. Thanks again for your sincerecommitment to our Foundation!
