BELIEF
People from other countries immigrating to US – GOOD or BAD?
Why? Why?
Immigration threatens the American way of life
Allowing immigration protects humans & benefits all
WHO? WHO?
What this group wants others to believe about this belief
What this group wants others to believe about this belief
Continuous flow of immigrants into US from countries all over the world
US is viewed as good place to move to because of its economic opportunities, freedoms, justice system & stable gov.
Some are legal (have permission from US to move here) and many more are illegal (come without permission)
Limits to Growth (an anti-immigration org.)
Citizens and Immigrants for Equal Justice
Want you to believe that …Immigration results in overpopulation,
Immigrants contribute to traffic problems and other growth issues in cities and towns,
Immigrants put too many challenges in the classrooms
Allows immigration creates terrorists threats, and public health problems
The notion that “immigrants help society” is a myth
The CIEJ is a group of American/Legal-resident families facing permanent separation due to the 1996 Immigration laws.
Want you to believe that …Families are being destroyed, lives shattered, and children devastated because immigration laws:
Are too harsh Unjustly characterize their families as undesirable and a danger to society. Threaten their legal residence
So what? What is important to understand about this?
It takes world leadership and support to make a global difference. People of the world unite over solutions to deal with natural disasters, but disagree and tend to become complacent over man-made disasters, which can cause much more destruction than disasters caused by nature.
Main ideasConclusion
210,000+ die in natural disasterMassive earthquake(Indian and Burma Plates collide)
800,000+ die in devastating ethnic slaughter in attempt to eliminate tribes
20 million die in man-made attempt at genocide of the Jewish race.
Causes All 3 events caused massive loss of lives. All 3 could have beenprevented if countries cared more
Dec. 26, 2004
Tsunami
July, 1994Rwanda genocide
1936-45WW II
Holocaust
Global ConcernInternational leaders pledge financial & moral support
Slaughter reported in news, world watched and did nothing.
World offered little support to stop holocaust or support those fleeing it
Public Opinion
REACTIONS/SUPPORTTsunami = immediate Holocaust = delayed for yearsRwanda = none
Prevention strategies- create early warning system in Indian Ocean like one in Pacific Ocean
The world has done nothing to prevent further slaughters
The world has done very little to prevent further slaughters
Long-term reaction
Huge reaction to natural disasters;
Minimal reaction to man-made disasters

Changes

Brazil’s population explosion (need jobs & income!)
Limited resources & ways to make money
Access to media (TV) shows apparent wealth of rest of the world makes poor
Brazilians want “a piece of the economic pie”
Brazil’s poor economy / need for money
Foreign companies willing to pay $$$ for beef & wood (teak, mahogany, lumber)
Cutting down rain forests as fast as possible to make grazing land for cattle & to sell trees for lumber
New source of income making some Brazilians rich...provides many
temporary jobs
Thin top soil washing away because loss of rain forest root systems, results in desert
like conditions where little will grow
Because of lost ecosystems, many animals & plants rapidly becoming
extinct - lost opportunity for develop of new medicines?
Loss of vast areas of vegetation results in less oxygen in atmosphere, & more carbon dioxide ...global warming?
Must generate alternative source of income for Brazilians, or they won’t stop clearing rain forests -- what would be other ways for them to make
money & generate jobs?
US Fast-food companies contract
for beef imports

So what? What is important to understand about this problem?
U.S. Unions Threatened Is about …
Why Union membership is dropping in the U.S.
Loss of Jobs
Job loss in manufacturing, construction, hotels, restaurants, and the airlines
Since, 2001, the U.S. has lost 1.85 million manufacturing jobs
1991-4 million union members in manufacturing2005-fewer than 2.5 million
New Technology, such as computer & robots, has replaced some workers
Part of the Problem
Changing Labor Market
Growing number of workers who work part-time
More women and teenage workersThese workers tend to have a negative view of unions
Service sector of economy is growing while manufacturing section is shrinking
Management offering employees wages and working conditions similar to union shops
Part of the Problem
Outsourcing
Many large corporations outsource, or send work to other countries for cheaper labor
Financial services co. predict 500,000 U.S. jobs will leave U.S. in the next 5 years
U.S. technology firms pay foreign countries $10 billion a year to handle data entry, analysis etc.
Overseas workers are generally paid less than Americans
