PASTORAL LETTER Jacky writes

Well, this Sunday (31st May) was meant to be my big send off! Send off as your curate, that is. The plan was to have a month away from the Parish and come back all shiny and new as the Rector.

But, as with many things, the coronavirus pandemic has scuppered that.

Here is the (current) new plan, I will officially be the curate until the 30th June. I shall be in the parish (because I can’t go anywhere else) but I will have two weeks off, during which I will try and get the house finally up together. The furniture in the study is currently in its third configuration. Who would have guessed that my main consideration for its layout would be the light during recordings?

Bishop Colin will license me as Rector on Thursday 9th July at 7pm. It’s very likely that this will happen by the magic of Zoom (a form of video conference call) rather than in person, as it seems unlikely that we will be able to meet in church by then (I will be VERY happy to be wrong on that!).

So, by my reckoning I will be two parties down - one for the end of my curacy and one for the beginning of my time as Rector.

There are emotional, psychological and deeply theological shifts happening as I move from curate to Rector so the loss of two parties may seem frivolous and incidental. However, a sense of community is deeply rooted into the Christian faith. We describe God as Trinity, three beings in one. It is not possible to discuss, or even think about God, without becoming aware that it is all about relationships. Jesus, the Son of God, is the role model that we follow for our human life: Jesus built community around him, he met with people, he ate and drank with them, he visited them, they visited him. He went to weddings, celebrated the religious feasts and gatherings of his time. He touched to heal, he embraced people. We have a gospel mandate to gather together as a community.

To lose two significant occasions, and all the other moments, for us to joyfully meet together is something to be sad about. The loss is real. Our challenge is how to continue and, even build on, being a community, how to maintain relationships when we can’t meet together physically?

So far, we have done well, I think. Weekly services have continued, we now have a shared daily Bible reading, phone calls, texts messages emails and zoom meetings are keeping us in contact. It is going to take some focus and effort to keep these all going, and my hope and prayer is that we will all find the strength and courage to do so.

As with God, so it is with us: it’s about relationships.

My encouragement to you is to keep up. Keep up your commitment to stay in touch with each other, by whatever method works for you. It’s becoming clear that this is a time to deepen some relationships, conversations have an opportunity to become deeper and more personal.

And when the time is right, when it is safe to do so, we will joyfully come together for a long-awaited celebration, following the Jesus’ model of how-to party!

Spirit of love: Touch us, and through us, our neighbour Spirit of Creativity: Enable and empower the gifts you have given Spirit of Eternity: Draw us ever deeper into your Kingdom Amen Psalm 104:31 -end

May the glory of the LORD endure for ever; may the LORD rejoice in his works— who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke.

I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the LORD. Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD! Reading Acts 2: 1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.

Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and

perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’ But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say.

Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Reflection (by Jacky) The Day of Pentecost is often referred to as the birthday of the church. In Luke’s account of the early church its easy to see why. This is the day that the Holy Spirit descends on the group of Jesus’ followers and turns them into true and brave proclaimers of the good news: that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead, that he is the Son of God through whom eternal life is made possible. As a community, we are currently reading through the book of Exodus and one of the reasons we decided on that was because how foundational it is to our faith today, and here we have an example of that. The day of Pentecost is also known as the Festival of Weeks and in the Jewish faith it marks two things: the end of the wheat harvest (also known as the harvest of the first fruits) and God giving Moses the Torah (the Jewish law that underpinned their whole society). This is recorded as happening on Mount Sinai seven weeks after the first Passover and the escape from slavery in Egypt.

It’s possible to draw a parallel with the physical harvest and this being a day of harvest of believers. The first ever sermon of the emerging Christian Church drew in three thousand new believers (Acts 2: 41). The parallel with the coming of the Holy Spirit with the Festival of First fruits might well be why Paul describes the attributes of someone living by, and being guided by, the Spirit as fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:2226). Moses receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai was also accompanied by some intense atmospheric conditions, there was thunder and lightning and God descended to the mountain in fire (Exodus 19:16-19). And here in Acts the coming of the Holy Spirit is described as a violent rushing wind with tongues of fire. God certainly seems to like making an entrance! The continuing presence of God the Father and Jesus Christ in the world in the form of the Holy Spirit (very confusing, mysterious and mystical) means that we have a reminder and a constant comfort that we are free from the slavery of sin and death, just as the Israelites were free from oppression in Egypt. The giving of the Torah to Moses marked the beginning of the Israelites forming themselves into a functioning society. The parallel is that the gift of the Holy Spirit is the beginning of the Christian community. Both in the Jewish understanding of Pentecost and the Christian celebration there is a sense of God wanting a continued, deep and intimate relationship with us.

It is up to us to hear the words of Peter’s first sermon he began by saying “let this be known to you and listen to what I say” (Acts 2:14). When we listen, we will realise how much God loves us. Amen. Time for personal prayer: Give yourself as long as you need. The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen Hymn (sing aloud, quietly, silently or to be prayed) 1 Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. 2 O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 3 And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far out pass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till Love create a place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling. Blessing: The Spirit of truth lead you into all truth, Give you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord And strengthen you to proclaim the word and works of God. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit + be you and all those you love, now and forever, Amen.

SUNFLOWER PRAYER OF SUPPORT Those at either end of our community really do require our prayers and thoughts at this time.

The residents and staff of Hempton Field care home are having a tough time. One of the things that makes this so hard for them is the lack of contact with family and friends.

Did you know that our schools in the villages haven’t actually closed at all since the lockdown began??

They have stayed open all this time to look after children of key workers. Some of the school staff didn’t even have a full Easter break.

The schools are hoping to re-open more fully, in some way, in June. A time that is a mixture of both anxiety and relief for many.

We moved here 14 years ago after living in Chinnor for 23 years. It was a tough move leaving family, work, Church family etc behind, but it had to be done. Pretty soon after moving here my mum who lived in Bristol needed us more and more. Help with shopping, housework, appointments etc. Sadly, she passed away in 2015 age 94. There isn’t a day goes by we don’t miss her.

It wasn’t long after moving here that we were Involved in Church life, another St Andrews. Dave as a reader (don’t think they are called that now) and me in the choir. After living here about 6 months Ian returned home to live. Not long after his son Oscar joined him (now 15). Life ticked along nicely. Ian ‘gigging’ as self-employed singer, Oscar attending school and Dave and I running the home and doing Church things. Life was pretty good, making new friends, although we missed our family and friends in Chinnor. Then in April 2016 Dave became poorly with what we thought was a bad cold. I eventually got him to make an appointment to see a doctor. We were told Dave would not be coming home with me and they had called an ambulance as his breathing was so bad. Tests were done and I was called to the hospital for us to be told he had cancer and it was terminal. Our lives were about to be turned upside down, and 4 weeks later my Dave passed away, very peaceful and was always at peace. Dave told the doctors and nurses he knew where he was going but not quite sure how he was getting there. Within 10 months I had lost my mum and husband. Both being rocks in my life. Church continues to be an important part of my life and I still love to sing. Ian continues to live with me. He is now an entertainments manager at one of the holiday parks here and Oscar (now in year 10) is hoping to become a hairdresser. I keep the home running, run a pop-in club for retired folk, do a little visiting and of course, there’s always the Church choir. I tune in to the weekly service from Chinnor which brings me closer to all my Chinnor friends. I’m not so sure I like this new normal and I really don’t know what I would do without my faith, good family and friends. This just leaves me to say, “May God bless you and keep you safe”. Di Higgott.

Do you know how many different titles there has been since the first one I have? I will let you know the names of copies I still possess. I thought I might dispose of some but on reading them memories are too precious to throw away.

A few events that took place here in early 1970 were Parish Fetes held at the Crows Nest, Chinnor Hill. Some of the events included a Comic Dog Show ,the first Barbeque for Henton Cancer Fund in the garden of The Eagle, Henton (now the Peacock) in August 1970. An evening Fayre in aid of St. Andrews Church organ repair fund. Charity Balls were very popular. The 21st Anniversary one in 1973 was attended by Clive Dunn, John Pertwee, John le Mesuire and Judy Dench. All monies raised were donated to local charities. Donkey Derby’s held here for some years. A Playscheme was organised in school summer holidays and train trips were very well supported and enjoyed. I remember going to York and we had a lovely day. An added bonus was that we saw a wedding in York Minster. A decorated Bicycle was a special competition at some of St Andrews Church fetes. Chinnor was a very busy village then and still continues to be active.

I will ring off now and if I am allowed, I may share more memories I remember.

Thanks for reading this and I hope you enjoyed it. Daphne Folley. *********************************************

The settings button in the bottom left of the bridge screen (below is an example of play) allows to you change some of the layout (eg. whether cards are ascending or descending in your hand and to switch off the system making suggestions for you!).

PUZZLES, POEMS AND THE LIKE!! Hidden books of the Bible (How many can you find?)

A remark was once made about hidden books of the Bible. It was Lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts. For others it was a revelation, some were in a jam especially since the names of the books are not capitalized.

But the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. It should be a most fascinating time for you. Yes, there are some books that will be a hard job to find however those are the most fun!

Can a human being really find all twenty-one of them listed here? At the worst you should find fifteen. No defect in the genes is required, although I will admit it usually takes a Minister to find one of them. There will be loud lamentations when it is found. What will keep you from answering this challenge? A lady says she brews a cup of tea to enable her to concentrate better.

How long you keep working on it only you can judge so as you try to complete it remember, we’ve had fun seeking out twenty-one books of the Bible.

However, it is far more important to ‘seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.’ It is always true that God loves you. (Unknown)

The Sailorman’s Prayer.

The Lord is my pilot, I shall not drift. He lights me across the dark waters. He steers me through the deep channels. He keeps my log. He guides me by the Star of Holiness for His Name’s sake.

As I sail through the storms and tempests of life, I will dread no danger; For You are near me;

Your love and care shelter me in the Homeland of Eternity; You quieten the waves with oil, my ship rides calmly;

Surely sunlight and starlight shall be with me wherever I sail, And at the end of my voyaging I shall rest in the port of my God.

It’s fun to cook for Andy. Today I made angel food cake. The recipe said beat 12 eggs separately. The neighbours were nice enough to lend me some extra bowls. Tuesday: Andy asked for fruit salad for supper. The recipe said to serve without dressing. So, I didn’t dress. What a surprise when Andy brought a friend home for supper. Wednesday: A good day for rice. The recipe said wash thoroughly before steaming the rice. It seemed ‘kind of silly’ but I took a bath anyway. I can’t say it improved the rice in any way. Thursday: Today Andy asked for salad again. I tried a new recipe. It said prepare ingredients: lay on a bed of lettuce for one hour before serving. Andy asked me why I was rolling around in the vegetable garden.

Friday: I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said put the ingredients in a bowl and beat it!! There must have been something wrong with this recipe. When I got back, everything was the same as when I left. Saturday: Andy did the shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday. I don’t have any clothes to fit it, and for some reason Andy keeps counting to ten.

Sunday: Andy’s folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast but all I had was hamburgers. Suddenly I had a flash of genius. I put the hamburgers in the oven and set the controls for ‘roast’. To my disappointment, it still came out hamburger. Good Night dear Diary: This has been a very exciting week!! I am eager for tomorrow to come so I can try out a new recipe on Andy. First, I need to talk him into buying a bigger oven because I would like to surprise him with a chocolate moose!!!. (Unknown)

The shelves are empty. Wipe clean your food, But that’s OK because Yes, and Jesus The tomb is empty too! Wiped clean my heart. The theatres are empty, The President said The areas are empty, Stay safe, Stay home, The offices are empty. Jesus said, But that’s OK because You’re safe, The grave is empty too! Your heart is my home. Don’t touch your face, The tiny invisible enemy Don’t touch your mouth, may be here for now, Don’t touch your eyes. But my God is Real, That’s OK because Bigger and Forever! He touched my life.
