UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION

The United Nations is made up of 193 member states (countries) and Australia was

a founding member in 1945.

After the Second World War many countries established UN Associations, to

encourage community volunteers to promote and support the UN. Today there are 103 Associations, and in Australia we have divisions in each state and the

Territories.

United Nations Students Associations (UNSA) have also been formed to introduce university students to the operation of the UN. Students organise and run Model UN Conferences both in Australia and overseas, and raise funds to support a wide range

of charities.

United Nations Youth Associations (UNYA) have been formed to encourage and support secondary school students to develop an understanding of the role of the

United Nations.

In 2010 the Queensland Division initiated the UNAA Qld Community Awards to

acknowledge individuals and organisations who support and carry out the UN principles.

In 2013 the UNAA Qld Young Entrepreneurs and Young Professionals was

established to introduce the UN to young people between 18- 35years.

In Australia we have also established the Academic Network and the Parliamentary

Group in Canberra and Brisbane..

People all over the world have initiated activities which support peace and which raise funds for special projects and are recognised by the UN. For example Wangari

Maathai, from Kenya planted one tree in 1975 and gradually built this idea of sustainability through trees into an organisation, the Greenbelt Movement, as a result today over 40 million trees have been planted throughout Africa.

There are many UN Ambassadors who both promote the ideals of the UN and raise

funds to support UN programs. The UN has enlisted volunteer services and support of prominent personalities from the worlds of art, music, film, sport and literature to

highlight key issues and to draw attention to UN activities, for example:

UNICEF International Ambassadors

David Beckham, Football, United Kingdom; Serena Williams, Tennis, USA

UNICEF National Ambassadors, Australia Callan McAuliffe, Actor; The Wiggles, Children's Entertainers; Jimmy Barnes, Singer;

Tara Moss, Author/Former model: Elle Macpherson, Model/Actress/ Businesswoman: Geoffrey Rush, Actor; Manchester United FC, UK football.

UN Messengers of Peace: Yang Yang, Music; Michael Douglas Actor; Jane Goodall; Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein.

WFP Ambassador against Hunger; Jessica Watson. Ambassadors for Women’s Rights: Nicole Kidman; Emma Watson.

UNHCR Australia Special Representatives: Marta Dusseldorp, Actor; Jane Turner, writer and executive producer; Mark Schwarzer Australian soccer;

Sarah-Jane Clarke, co founder of fashion label sass & bide.

And many others worldwide.

QUEENSLAND COMMUNITY AWARDS________________

“We the peoples of the United Nations”

“In communities around Australia and in particular in Queensland – from the

suburbs to regional and rural areas and to the inner cities – many of us are often struck by the extraordinary efforts made by individuals and organisations to support

and assist Australians”. The United Nations Association Qld Community Awards have been set up so that

these people can be recognised for their selfless and often uncelebrated efforts and commitment in their day-to-day lives relating to issues of peace, human rights,

social justice and equality – efforts that serve to better the society we live in.

A. RATIONALE BEHIND ESTABLISHING THE UNITED

NATIONS COMMUNITY AWARDS To recognise people and organisations in our communities, based in Queensland, who have shown outstanding effort in initiating or supporting activities/projects

Students Participate in International Day of Peace Observance

International Day of Peace, 21 September, is a United Nations holiday. Students

with flags of United Nations Member States participating in a ceremony in the Rose

Garden, outside United Nations Secretariat Building, New York.

The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 to

“commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace within and among all nations and

people.” Twenty years later, the General Assembly decided that 21 September would

be observed annually as a “day of global ceasefire and non-violence" and invited all

Member States, organizations and individuals to commemorate the day, including

through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in

the establishment of a global ceasefire.
