UNITED CHURCH HOMES | SPRING 2018 | unitedchurchhomes.org

Rev. Kenneth Daniel President and CEO

Like a Tree Planted By Water: We are into March Madness as I write these words, and a unique story caught my eye. The Loyola men’s basketball team has a “chaplain” for their team. She is a 98-year-old retired nun who has a long association with the university and the team. Her job is to provide spiritual support and scout opponents. Talk about the mix of spiritual and secular purpose! Her role is to pray before games, support the players and cull through the stats of each opponent, analyzing their strengths and vulnerabilities. She is loving life and court sidelines!

Our vision at United Church Homes is to create experiences of abundant life in community. We celebrate the spirit of so many who stay vital and engaged well into their later years. A 98-year-old nun who has been mentor, coach and colleague over so many years surely has made a tremendous and continuing impact on all the people she meets. We honor people such as this who experience an abundance of purpose, community and meaning.

We also celebrate the progress toward achieving our vision through the accomplishments of 2017. United Church Homes’ Board, staff and residents have been busy moving forward and navigating many challenges but keeping sight on our vision and mission. Like a tree planted by a stream, UCH’s roots tap deeper sources of sustaining energy that enable us to grow the impact of our mission.

In 2017 we celebrated the following accomplishments:

• Raised our quality performance with our skilled communities achieving 4-star quality or better through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services;

• Harmar Place and Patriot Ridge Community earned the national Silver Quality Award from the American Health Care Association, joining Chapel Hill Community and SEM Haven in this elite circle. In addition, Four Winds Community earned state recognition for its effort to improve certain clinical quality benchmarks;

• Expanded affordable housing portfolio with acquisitions of three communities in Minnesota and Mississippi;

• Broke ground on new independent living cottages at Parkvue Community and completed major capital projects at Parkvue Health Care Center, Friendship Village Columbus and SEM Haven Health Care Center;

• Began the repositioning of Pilgrim Manor with renovation and expansion of its assisted living apartments;

• Completed the three-year, $7.2 million remodeling of our oldest campus, Fairhaven Community; and

• Launched a new management affiliation with UCC-related Uplands Village in Pleasant Hill, Tennessee.

A 98-year-old nun cheering on her team to victory is the spirit we celebrate with all of our residents and staff. Our successes of 2017 reflect the passionate coordination of resources and support among our teams, executives and Board members. There is no age limit to pursue our vision of creating abundant life for those we serve.

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.

They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out

its roots by the stream.

It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green;

In the year of drought, it is not anxious, and it does

not cease to bear fruit. (Jeremiah 17:7-8)

Rev. Greta is among 600 pastoral educators certified by the Association for Clinical Pastoral

Education (ACPE). She was brought on board with UCH in September 2013 to implement the vision of Rev. Kenneth Daniel, United Church Homes president and CEO, for CPE in Trinity’s life plan community. Experiencing Trinity’s wise residents, the organizational vision of creating abundant life for those served and the collaborative Trinity team led by Laura Farrell, LHNA, she knew that Trinity was poised to nurture a robust CPE program in a nontraditional CPE setting.

Rev. Greta Wagner retired in April as director of pastoral care and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at United Church Homes’ Trinity Community. Her innovative spirit lives on in the vibrant life of Trinity Community in Beavercreek, Ohio.

“ As a midwife, I am aware it is up to the student and God to decide what will be birthed,” Rev. Greta said.

Rev. Greta received a President’s Award of Distinction for her leadership and innovation from Rev. Daniel during a retirement celebration April 5.

“Greta Wagner was the right person at the right time to develop and launch our Clinical Pastoral Education program,” Rev. Daniel said. “She has the dedication and passion for the mission of CPE. Many of our students have stated that this program literally changed the direction of their lives personally and professionally.”

Under Rev. Greta’s leadership, in December 2013, ACPE granted Trinity CPE status as a satellite of the Sisters of Charity Health System. Trinity attained status as an ACPE Center in its own right in May 2016.

As CPE director and certified educator of eight CPE units at Trinity, Rev. Greta supervised 33 CPE graduates. A creative CPE curriculum to develop pastoral identity and authority included each student’s enactment of a pastoral image project. Rev. Greta identified her own pastoral image of a “midwife” as a CPE educator and instrumental presence with her students.

CPE students serve as chaplain interns who learn to provide effective, empathic pastoral care. They learn the art of pastoral preaching and leading worship services attuned to spiritual needs of older adults.

Rev. Dale Brown, a board-certified chaplain, serves in the program to provide pastoral mentoring for CPE students.

Rev. Greta’s education, professional experience and call to ordained ministry have been creatively wrought. She observed excellent long-term care for older adults during her childhood. Her Aunt Tats, a registered nurse, owned and directed the Healy Nursing Home in a Victorian home in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, suburbs. A welcoming, immaculate environment reflected the exquisite care provided each resident. Her Aunt Tats’ hospitality and inclusion extended to fair employment of women who served as nurses, aides, housekeepers and cooks.

Rev. Greta earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1970, actively serving as a registered nurse for 17 years. In 1986, she earned a master’s degree in religious studies in Philadelphia. She received her Master of Divinity degree in 1991 from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1990, she was called as the first female associate pastor of First Baptist in Lima, Ohio, where she was ordained March 10, 1991. Upon completion of four units of CPE, Rev. Greta was endorsed for specialized ministry as a professional chaplain in 1997. She served as an ICU and open-heart chaplain at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima, and regional director of spirituality, ACPE supervisory education student and ACPE-certified associate supervisor for Geisinger Health System. Greta was granted full status as an ACPE-certified supervisor/educator in May 2014.

When Rev. Greta began her position at Trinity, her goals — all of which were accomplished — were ambitious. Her aspirations were to:

• Establish creative CPE programs in an innovative, nontraditional setting;

• Offer seminary students, pastors and those discerning the call to ministry opportunities to develop pastoral competence in long-term pastoral relationships (rarely possible in CPE hospital-based programs);

• Prepare CPE students to wholeheartedly and vulnerably engage others in ways meaningful to the recipient of pastoral care;

• Be an advocate for the spiritual care of older adults, an increasingly marginalized population within and beyond the church;

• Invite students to rigorously participate in self-reflective learning, equipping for their futures within and beyond congregations; and

• Support United Church Homes’ commitment to foster ministry in the church.

Rev. Greta has seen her ministries make a difference, reflecting on the impact of Council for Health and Human Service Ministries (CHHSM) of the United Church of Christ. Introduced to CHHSM in 2015, Greta was inspired by President and CEO Mike Readinger’s inaugural address, which led her to seek and receive UCC recognition of her ordained ministry.

Rev. Greta’s greatest joys are her daughters and their families: Beth (Bob) Sokolowski, of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and their daughter, Ana, 17; and Jacqui (Brad) Schlachter, of Findlay, Ohio, and their children, Blake, 6, and Macie, 4. She loves being known to her family as “Muzzy,” an Irish grandmother.

Rev. Greta concludes her tenure with Trinity’s well-organized CPE program with deep fulfillment for the opportunity to collaboratively establish a solid foundation for Clinical Pastoral Education. During the 2017-18 CPE extended unit graduation ceremony, Rev. Greta was recognized by UCH Vice President of Advancement and Communications Gloria T. Hurwitz, chair of the Professional Advisory Group, for her “cascading excellence.”

Rev. Greta is looking forward to pursuing her lifelong love of learning in a Doctor of Ministry program at Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit. Pastorally, Rev. Greta is anxious to see the new ways transformative learning will evolve in Trinity’s CPE program as an accredited Center of ACPE, the gold standard for spiritual care and education.

UCH Welcomes Linda Grant

United Church Homes and the Trinity Community ACPE Center welcome Rev. Linda C. Grant, MDiv, a board-certified chaplain and ACPE-certified educator who has been hired to fill the role of director of pastoral care and CPE ACPE-certified educator. Rev. Linda comes from Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania, where she served as departmental liaison and preceptor at Penn State Children’s Hospital. Previously, she served in various roles related to chaplaincy and ACPE education at St. Luke’s University Health Network, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Northeast Health System, Beverly, Massachusetts; and Beacon Hospital, Charleston, Massachusetts.

For residents of United Church Homes communities, giving is a way of life and a ritual to

which they are deeply committed.

Residents of Chapel Hill, Fairhaven, Parkvue and Trinity communities collectively gave more than $20,300 to local, national and international charities in 2017 through worship service collections. This practice has deep meaning for many people who choose to live at United Church Homes.

“The residents love to give,” said Rev. Dr. Becky King, chaplain at Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and dean of chaplains at UCH. “One hundred percent of their gifts are given to charities of their choice. Some people bring coins; some people bring bills. Some are able to offer prayers as their gift.”

Residents Continue RITUAL OF GIVING

Many residents of Trinity Community of Beavercreek, Ohio, have a long history in the United Church of Christ, of which UCH is an affiliate. Rev. Dale Brown, chaplain at Trinity Community, said residents often advocate for contributions to the United Church of Christ’s Global Ministries to spread the word and cause of Christ to the world.

Other times, residents elect to give their contributions to local charities or nonprofit organizations, such as food banks, homeless and domestic violence ministries and organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association.

The faithful also help their peers by giving to the community’s Life Enrichment Fund. This fund provides resources for life enrichment, group outings and other resident needs.

“People will bring their bingo money. Even if they only can give four quarters, it’s extremely important to them,” said Rev. Cathy Lawrence, chaplain of Parkvue Community in Sandusky, Ohio.

Recently, at Chapel Hill Community in Canal Fulton, Ohio, residents made their gifts go further with a donor match for the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, said Rev. Erin McCreight, chaplain at Chapel Hill. Each year, they also sponsor a child for $500 through Family Village Farm in India’s child-elders sponsorship program.

Many of the chaplains share details about the giving from the organizations receiving the funding during mission moments in worship services.

Emily Howard, a chaplain intern at Fairhaven, said she was touched by the energy that giving sparks in residents.

“We’re each called as people living in a faith community to share what we have and give of ourselves, and we’re connected in that way. It’s part of our faith,” she said.

Aging

Building a Culture of Community, Wholeness and Peace

Staff members track data related to the mission, vision and values by answering questions such as:

The results from 2017 show United Church Homes is committed to transforming the culture from ageist to age friendly.

“ How can we help to build influence in the larger culture and nurture their understanding of Abundant Life?”

“ How does our mission lead us into the larger community to help transform aging there?”

“ What are the things we do in our communities that contribute to building the culture of community, wholeness and peace, thanks to the philanthropic support of others?”

Last year was one full of opportunities and challenges for United Church Homes.

In 2017, we expanded our capacity to serve older adults in 14 states and two Native American nations, extending our mission to new territory. We also are committed to seeking out and creating ways to enrich the lives of people living in our communities. We continue to expand memory care life enrichment programs like Comfort Matters, Opening Minds through Art and Music & Memory while identifying new ways to make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.

Providing quality care is a focus for UCH. One measure that we use is the 5-Star Quality Measure from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). I’m pleased to report that UCH has demonstrated excellence as a leader in quality in the state of Ohio and beyond. All 12 United Church Homes owned and managed communities that offer nursing care have earned five stars on quality! That is a remarkable example of the hard work and dedication of our team members who serve older adults every day.

A Y E A R O F O P P O R T U N I T Y

Professional development is essential to fulfill the mission and vision of United Church Homes, so we continue to invest in our greatest resource — our people. Certified and highly trained staff members provide the best in services and supports for the people we serve.

In 2017, United Church Homes also invested in other ways: an expansion of Parkvue Community in Sandusky, Ohio, where 10 state-of-the-art cottages are being constructed; a renovation and expansion of the assisted living center at Pilgrim Manor in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and major renovations at two managed communities, SEM Haven in Milford, Ohio, and Friendship Village Columbus. Additionally, we welcomed Harmony Apartments in Pleasant Hill, Minnesota, into the family of affordable housing properties in 14 states across the U.S.

The year also saw the completion of a three-year renovation at United Church Homes’ flagship campus, Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. We rededicated the campus while simultaneously kicking off the comprehensive Campaign for Abundant Life, a historic five-year effort to raise $20 million so United Church Homes can continue providing abundant life in community well into the future.

The UCH Board regularly evaluates itself and looks for ways to improve. During 2017, we completed a self-assessment and approved bylaw changes for a more compact board of 12-15 members. We also implemented a new committee structure, which we believe will enhance governance.

We look forward to continuing our work to be servant leaders throughout United Church Homes communities and outside of our doors in 2018!

Sue enjoyed her time on United Church Homes’ former Resident Services Committee, which combined Housing and Healthcare Services. She was Board vice chair from 2010-13 and served on the housing, advancement, governance, staff relations and advancement performance committees throughout her tenure.

In addition to her service to United Church Homes, Sue is on the Board of Directors for Andrews Osborne Academy, Willoughby,

After 11 years on the United Church Homes Board of Directors, Sue

Ellis attended her final Board meetings in May, leaving a legacy that extends three generations.

Sue joined the Board in February 2007 as UCH faced an uncertain future, due to the recession that took a financial toll on the organization. The Board needed to make tough decisions to guide the organization through those difficult times and prepare for a stronger future, she said.

Sue’s relationship with United Church Homes started with her United Church of Christ roots and experiences at Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Her grandfather, George Schoedinger, gave to Fairhaven for years, and her father, Robert Schoedinger, continued the tradition, helping to fund an expansion at Fairhaven that included the Gathering Place. Sue has extended her family’s legacy of giving with her generous donations over many years.

Sue is a strategic donor who challenges Board members to contribute to UCH each year to reach their goal of 100 percent participation by sponsoring an incentive for a matching gift to increase their total giving. She was a lead donor in 2011 to support

Fairhaven’s Capital Campaign and in 2016 signed on to be a founding funder of United Church Homes’ innovative Ruth Frost Parker Center for Abundant Aging. Most recently, she led the charge of an aggressive Board goal for United Church Homes’ $20 million comprehensive Campaign for Abundant Life by making another generous gift.

In 2017, Sue was recognized with the exclusive President’s Award of Distinction for her generosity, leadership and vision for the organization. In 2013, Sue was recognized as the honoree for the Ben M. Herbster Award for Fairhaven Community, again following in her father’s footsteps. He was recognized with the distinguished honor in 1999.

A lifelong educator who taught every grade from pre-kindergarten through college, Sue brought her passion to the Board with a special interest in benevolent care. Her late father was a former president of the Ohio Masonic Home, and her family has a long history of helping older adults.

Ohio; Lake Erie College, Painesville, Ohio; and the National Alumni Board of Lake Erie College.

Sue said she will miss the comradery of the UCH Board.

“It’s so cliché. I think every person who’s ever retired has said the same thing,” Sue said, “but you hear it so much because it’s true. I admire and have great respect for everyone on the Board. There is tremendous respect and pride in our organization as a whole.

“The upside is I’ll get to sleep in.” Sue joked. “I think I’ve gained more from the organization than I’ve given to it. Coming from education, I didn’t know much about how a corporation worked. I’ve learned a lot about areas that I probably wouldn’t have gotten to learn about otherwise, and I can apply what I’ve learned to the other boards that I’m serving on now.”

In August, the Board voted to amend the bylaws, reducing its size through attrition as members retire. That works well for United Church Homes, as Sue is an irreplaceable asset.

UCH Welcomes David Brainin David Brainin, a central Ohio affordable housing consultant, has

joined the United Church Homes Board of Directors.

David graduated from New York University in 1974 with a degree in sociology and completed graduate work at The Ohio State University. But his passion for working with older adults, which started at a young age, led him to work in development, rehabilitation and management operations for affordable housing communities. He also assists nonprofits in the development and rehabilitation of affordable housing properties.

David was introduced to United Church Homes 25 years ago when he first met Vice President of Housing Services Cheryl Wickersham through LeadingAge Ohio, an advocate for nonprofit organizations serving older adults.

“I’m really excited to be involved as United Church Homes looks to expand its affordable housing services,” David said. “I believe everyone needs housing. With my background in long-term care and the continuum of care, I’m really interested in all facets of the organization.”

David grew up in Detroit, where his mother ran a nursing home, sparking a lifelong interest in David to serve older adults. He followed in her footsteps to become a nursing home administrator before moving into affordable housing.

He brings to the Board a wealth of experience and expertise in senior living services, affordable housing and strategic planning. He also brings a nonprofit perspective, having worked for nonprofits throughout his career.

“I tried retiring, but after six months, it wasn’t working out.” He laughed. “I need to be involved in my field.”

David lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife, Jackie.

By 2030, the number of people 65 and older in the U.S. will reach 71.5 million,

an increase of nearly 50 percent, and many will need affordable living options when they retire.

In an Associated Press poll, among families with incomes below $50,000, just 35 percent said they felt financially ready for retirement, while 66 percent of those in higher-income households felt ready. United Church Homes is committed to its mission to provide abundant living for older adults, regardless of their financial situations.

UCH supports lower-income residents who live in its affordable housing communities in a variety of ways through giving programs led by compassionate staff members. UCH staff develop creative ideas with partners who share in the ministry to foster abundant life for people in need.

In 2016, Director of Hospitality Amy Kotterman finished researching which dinnerware sets to add to the dining services at Fairhaven Community in

Upper Sandusky, Ohio, so they would complement their renovations.

She asked Gordon Food Service (GFS) how best to return the dozens of samples she had ordered during the project. Instead, GFS, a corporate partner for United Church Homes, asked whether the nonprofit organization could find uses for the samples.

“I had all of this beautiful fine dinnerware to disperse to those who needed it most,” Amy said. “Many of the older adults assisted by UCH Housing Services have very little of their own. I was thrilled to be able to make someone’s day by offering these sets to our regional housing managers, who distributed it to the residents who needed it.”

Another program encourages staff members who travel to offer their unused disposable hotel bath amenities such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion and body wash as donations to residents who cannot afford to purchase these

basic needs. This seemingly small act of kindness offers residents who live on very limited fixed incomes important budget relief.

United Church Homes’ Central Office in Marion, Ohio, also supports residents of Housing Services annually through its Jeans Day program. For various months throughout the year on Thursdays, for $2, staff members can wear jeans to the office. In 2017, staff contributed more than $490 to Housing Services to support the UCH Wishing Well grant program.

Wishing Well grants are funds that are awarded annually to Housing Services communities based on a competitive grant process (similar to public and private foundation grants) to support unbudgeted items. These grants support special projects to enhance the lives of the residents at the communities and include projects such as community room enhancements, dog parks, raised gardens, walking paths and outdoor gathering spaces.

TWO FIND UCH Amid Homelessness

Caroline and Sandy have been down similar roads in life, but only one led

them to United Church Homes.

Caroline and Sandy experienced homelessness before moving to Brownstone Terrace, a United Church Homes affordable housing community in Marion, Ohio. Sandy had been sleeping overnight in parks for three months, while Caroline had bounced from one house to another.

When Caroline lost her rental apartment due to the landlord selling the house, she packed all her possessions in her car. She reached out to family members, but only her 88-year-old aunt was able to help.

She spent two weeks seeking assistance from local nonprofit organizations to find a home. The Salvation Army helped Caroline find a homeless shelter, where she would stay 30 days.

“For two days, I was really scared,” Caroline said. “I had my Social Security money, and I kept calling different apartment buildings asking how I could get in. I didn’t know about Brownstone at that time. When I moved here (to Marion), I knew where Walmart and Kroger were. But I was afraid to go anywhere.”

With money saved from her Social Security checks and a $100 donation from a local church, Caroline was able to afford the deposit and first month’s rent at Brownstone. It helped that utilities are included in the rent, which is very affordable based on 30 percent of an individual’s income.

After finding Brownstone, Caroline began packing and, during her move, saw UCH staff members bringing in donations of food. This solidified her faith that she was going to a good community.

Eventually, staff members of United Church Homes, including Brownstone Housing Manager Jane Millisor and Senior Staff Accountant Jennifer Ramey, were instrumental in helping secure donations of food and furniture for Caroline’s new apartment. Soon she found a companion in a dog named Willie-Mac, who’s affectionately known as Prince Willie at Brownstone.

“It’s hard to ask for help. I don’t want things given to me, but I was not in a good place,” Caroline said.

Caroline, a recovering alcoholic who has been sober since September, knew she needed to give up alcohol. With Jane’s support, Caroline found a local Alcoholic Anonymous meeting to attend.

“When I first came here I wasn’t real happy,” Caroline said. “I didn’t know Marion. I didn’t know anyone. I knew vodka, and I leaned on him. But now I’ve been in an inpatient recovery program. Everyone at Brownstone has been so helpful and supportive. I don’t know what I’d do if I hadn’t found Brownstone.”

Sandy had lived in domestic violence shelters and homeless shelters. “It was really hard for me. I didn’t know if I could make it,” she said.

For Sandy, moving to Brownstone helped her get back on her feet. Brownstone’s service coordinator has been instrumental in assisting her as she stabilized her life.

“There are good people in the world,” Sandy said. “If you hang in there, God will help you through it.”

Two Graduate from CHHSM’s Nollau Institute

Erin Foos, United Church Homes Central Office manager and executive assistant to the president, and Beth Montgomery, Fairhaven Community assisted living director, recently graduated from the yearlong Nollau Institute servant leadership program. The program is part of the Council for Health and Human Service Ministries of the United Church of Christ (CHHSM). Graduates become Diakonal ministers, a special vocation for leaders within CHHSM, of which United Church Homes is a member.

The Nollau Institute is built around three major themes over four retreats: Hearing God’s Call: The Theology of Leadership, Following the Energy: The Practice of Leadership and Forming Faithful Cultures: The Product of Leadership.

“The personal and professional growth I gained from building relationships with other purpose- and mission-driven leaders has been incredible. Between the studying and personal reflection, I have become not just a stronger leader but also a better person,” Beth said.

Erin said the leadership program was challenging and life-changing. The highlight for her was the CHHSM Annual Gathering. “I was in awe to be around so many faith-based leaders,” she said. “Just to be part of that was a blessed experience.”

Four Winds Earns Eli Pick Award

Mary Casey, administrator at Four Winds Community in Jackson, Ohio, recently was nominated for the Eli Pick Leadership Award from the American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA).

Only 11 percent or 1,310 communities nationwide receive the distinguished award. The award uses outcomes-driven quality measures to objectively identify high-performing skilled nursing communities and the leaders who make them excel.

“Congratulations to Mary Casey and the entire Four Winds team for earning this award,” Chief Operating Officer Chuck Mooney said. “The award demonstrates Four Winds Community’s and United Church Homes’ unwavering commitment to quality and leadership development.”

“ A servant leader takes seriously the commandments to love God and love neighbor. It is one who strives to see the world as God intended and joins in service to others to bring about that vision — a vision of hope, justice, love, joy and peace for all.”

Chef Tyson Whistler has surpassed his call as a leader of the Dining

Services team at Glenwood Community in Marietta, Ohio.

Tyson is taking culinary science to a new level with his creative presentations that include a talent he has developed over the past decade — ice sculpting. With this unique skill, Tyson is regularly sought in the Marietta community to showcase his talents.

He was nominated for the 2017 Overachiever of the Year Award, a program of Marietta Main Street that recognizes an individual who has gone above and beyond to champion the Main Street mission to bring people together to preserve, enhance and enjoy downtown Marietta.

Tyson’s ice sculpting has been a popular attraction at the Marietta Fire and Ice Festival for the last two years. He creates ice sculptures for area businesses to display at their storefronts. He started carving for themed holidays at Marietta’s Lafayette Hotel, and his passion for the art grew.

Tyson Whistler Brings Passion to Ice SculptingIce sculpting begins with freezing the block of ice for three to four days. Then, Tyson says, he spends about four hours carving each masterpiece using special tools that include a chainsaw, chisels, die and angle grinders and milling machine bits.

A graduate of Marietta High School who studied at Marietta’s Washington State Community College, Tyson worked under Executive Chef Dave Rudie for six years, accepting his first executive chef position in 2007 at age 22. He was executive chef at three downtown establishments from 2007-13 and joined United Church Homes’ Glenwood Community in 2013 in what he said was the best decision of his life.

“It was an opportunity not only to get back to fine dining but to cater to a special group of diners,” Chef Tyson said. “We have a fresh menu

at Glenwood every week, so I always have the ability to create something new and different. I think the benefit of cooking for Glenwood Community over a restaurant is, because we’re a nonprofit organization, we have the opportunity to give back more to the residents and be less concerned with daily customer volume.”

Glenwood Community includes 12 village homes, 64 independent living apartments and 48 assisted living apartments. It offers residential and assisted living on a scenic campus with walking trails, restaurant-style dining and health and wellness programs. Glenwood Community’s The Pines Assisted Living won the Marietta Times 2017 Readers’ Choice Award, and the campus earned Holleran’s Highest Honors for resident engagement and satisfaction in 2017.
