Saturday Fun at the Club
Did you know that our Club is now open on Saturdays? That’s right! Many members
have already taken advantage of our extended weekend hours. Saturdays at the
Club are extra special because we break away from the weekday structure and offer
unique workshops and experiences. Members who pop in on Saturdays participate in
exclusive events such as Ultimate Frisbee clinics, beach cleanups, and extended
versions of our regular programs like Adventure Club and Justice League.
Recently, we have had a lot of fun participating in special weekend events. Our
members just went to a Santa Barbara City College football game where Shea M. , a
fellow Carpinteria Unit member, was recognized as the Honorary Game Captain!
Saturday Skate Day has quickly become a Club favorite; the gym transforms into a
skate park when kids are encouraged to bring their skateboards, scooters, and long-
boards for hours of fun. On Saturday November 21, the Carpinteria Unit hosted a
competitive Pool Tournament against the Goleta Unit. Good news: We won! The
coveted BGCA Billiards Champion trophy has a new home at the Carpinteria Club.
Saturday programs are free for all Club members! Not only do we have an amazing
time, but a complimentary lunch is always provided! Who knows where we will go
next?

Athletics
Both flag and tackle had an amazing time playing this year and excelled while doing it! The flag football team will be extending their reach to Camarillo & Lompoc in order to add more players to the teams. The tackle crew had a very successful run and are now a part of the G.C.Y.F.L. (Gold Coast Football Youth League). Cheerleading will be back and better than ever this year! Experienced cheerleaders will volunteer to coach and teach the younger students. However, we need an adult mentor to create a safe, educational, and exciting learning environment. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in mentoring a cheer team, please contact the number above. We would love to hear from you! Finally, Basketball is upon us! We are pumped up and ready to go for a new season. Sign ups have started and end the day of tryouts, January 9th. Volunteer coaches are needed and appreciated by our young athletes. Contact us if you’re interested! In the upcoming months following basketball season, we will be establishing an Indoor Soccer program as well as interclub tournaments! Thank you so much for your continuous support and appreciation for our athletes! Sincerely, Michael Hayes– Athletic Supervisor

Hero Report: Justice League of Carpinteria As a child, how many of us have dreamed of becoming superheroes? How amazing would it feel to save someone's life? To keep the general public safe? To inspire others for greatness while helping the needy or less fortunate? To save the environment or make a difference in the world every day? The children of the United Boys & Girls Clubs—Carpinteria Unit are doing just that. Lead by Youth Development Specialist Logan Staniforth, the Justice League of Carpinteria (JLC) was created to teach children at an early age that they can make a positive difference in the world. By participating in the JLC, kids learn lessons about morality and ethics. They learn powerfully positive words like “altruism”, “empathy” and “integrity.” They learn to act with compassion; that helping others can be its own reward. Then, they inspire and teach others to do the same. When the JLC was formed over a year ago there were only eight members. As of this October the JLC has grown to an incredible 51 heroes spread across six color-coded teams: Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Pink and Black! In future Hero Reports, we will share with you some of the many ways the heroes of the JLC help make a positive impact on their community every day.
Water Warrior from Red Team turned in a Chase credit card he found at school. Thanks to him there is one less potential victim of identity theft in the world. Together Dark Puma from Black Team and Super Math Man, Captain of Green Team, helped pick up 199 pieces of trash at Aliso School and at Club. An Aliso staff had this to say: "They're doing good work! They're definitely making my job easier!" Bubbles and Eevie Shadow from Black Team saved a ladybug who was about to be sat on during snack time. "It was raining outside so we made him a small, temporary terrarium out of a pencil box and some leaves. We kept him safe until the rain stopped and let him go outside." Very compassionate, heroes.
Titanio helped break up multiple arguments between his peers. Titanio recalls "I just remembered my de-escalation training from our first meeting: I stayed calm, I didn't raise my voice and used my words to help talk them down. I didn't want anyone to get hurt or to get in trouble so I stepped in before it got too crazy." Good job, Titanio! During gym time Nitro accidentally had the wind knocked
out of him in a Sharks and Minnows collision. Together
Beast, Ninjito and Blue Lightning sprung into action! The
Crowd Controller made a perimeter to give Nitro space, the
Speedster communicated with staff and retrieved an ice
pack for Nitro. Meanwhile the Detectives wrote up an inci-
dent report to describe the event to future detectives.
Nitro is doing well and has made a full recovery thanks to
his super team.

A Club I Call Home- The Albert Chavez Story As I was a young boy, I always used to attend the Boys & Girls Club of
Carpinteria. I have lots of memories growing up here, yet I never thought I
would end up working here. After years of volunteering, I have proven myself
and earned the h0nor of becoming a Teen Center staff at the Club. I have
worked lots of jobs in the Club; I started as a floater, then art room staff,
followed by facilities and finally worked up to getting my Teacher’s Aid
License. If I say so myself I know this Club pretty well. I also have really
bonded with all the kids from each facility and they are all amazing in many
different ways. I am sad to be leaving my position in the Teen Center, but I
won’t be completely gone! I’ll show up often and work as a substitute. Until
then, I hope everyone misses me as much as I will miss every single one of
you.

We started this program inn October
and it has quickly become a Teen
Center favorite. Passport to
Manhood teaches responsibility and
provides members with a better
understanding of the adult world.
To keep track of their progress, each
young man has, “his own “passport” to underscore the notion that he is on
a personal journey of maturation and growth (BGCA.net).” Topics include
Healthy Living, Employment/Careers, and Fatherhood/Family Planning.
So far, the teens have been really engaged in the topics we have talked
about. Passport to Manhood is a great time to share stories and learn from
each other.

Over the past several months , our center has
undergone some changes which offer new programs
and helpful resources for its members. Our programs
are designed to help teens prepare for college and
beyond.
Some of the new programs and highlights include:
Cal-Soap tutoring: homework help and test prep. Selene
Sandoval, a tutor from UCSB, works with the teens
often. A generous donation of five Apple Computers
now provides members with internet access for their
schoolwork.
Money Matters: Every Thursday members learn about
budgeting, saving and investing, planning for college,
credit and debit, and entrepreneurship.
SMART Girls: On Tuesdays this program helps young
ladies feel comfortable learning about puberty, self-
esteem, exercise, nutrition, and healthy friendships in
a confidential setting. They also share their feelings
and questions regarding topics in a setting apart from
the boys, making it even more personal and unique.
On some Friday nights, the Club is open until 9pm for
Stay Late. Teens participate in exclusive activities such
as field trips, dances, parties, and athletic challenges.
All Teens are encouraged to stay and participate;
often, a neighboring Club such as Goleta or Westside
will visit for some friendly competition.
Teen Center Highlights
Dayanna Martinez is one Teen Center member who’s positivity and courage makes a difference in our Club every time she attends. At first glance, Dayanna appears to be somewhat shy ; don’t be fooled! She is a compassionate young woman with strong loyalty towards her family and friends. She is easy-going while still being respectful to her staff and her peers. Dayanna is a great role model to the other members in the Teen Center because she is a constant example of how to respect yourself, respect others, and respect the Club. Her good character and positive attitude sets her apart daily. We can’t wait to see how far her passions take her!

Our Licensed After School Program (LASP) for kinder-
garteners thru fifth graders has many fun and educa-
tional programs going on weekly. We start every day
with our Triple Play program where we play fun ,
active, and educational games in the gym. We also
have Power Hour, a time to work on homework, read
books, or play educational games such as Bingo,
Spelling Bee, or Around the World. After Power Hour
is our designated time for Programs. We run
Programs Monday-Thursday from 4:30PM-5:30PM.
Monday Positive Sprouts- we spend time gardening and
learning about how to grow healthy foods.
Tuesday Healthy Bees ties in the importance of healthy
eating, and its effects on a growing child, while we
work together to grow their food.
Wednesday Creative Kids- an art program that sup-
ports the creativity in each individual child.
Thursday Lemonade Day- Over the next few weeks, the
students are planning g on putting together their own
lemonade stand. The kids will learn entrepreneurial
skills, business strategies, and customer service tech-
niques at a young age. In 2016, the team plans ron
debuting their business plan and selling their delicious
lemonade.
On the first Wednesday of every month we partner
with the Food bank of Santa Barbara County to host
our Kids Farmers’ Market. This is a fun and hands on
learning opportunity. Children participate in learning
new, healthy recipes while hearing about the food’s
origin. Children also get the chance to shop for fresh
produce; this teaches them lifelong skills about how to
properly fuel the human body.
Our jewel system encourages good behavior while
teaching them the value of saving the rewards of their
hard work. Children earn their jewels daily when they
display attributes of good character. On Fridays, our
Jewel Store opens up for all hard working shoppers.
That’s not all, we do offer fieldtrips on Fridays where
we go play at the parks, explore on nature walks and
visit the library to participate in fun art projects and
reading to expand our minds.

Digital Arts
Along with Justice League, Youth Develop0ment Specialist Logan Staniforth
enjoys teaching Digital Arts. This program inspires kids to use a different type of art medium: computer pixels! Students are using pixels to create their own creature, or Pixel Pals!
Logan is planning on taking the kids’ passion for digital arts further: in 2016, Pixel Pals will be the new popular trading card game among the members of the Carpinteria Club. The best part of this game, of course, is that the characters are made by members!
Pixel Pals is an incredible way to enjoy modern technology! Who knows what mysterious creatures our kids will create?
LASP Outstanding Youth: Christopher C. By: Cynthia
Since the start of the busy Summer months here at the Boys and Girls Club in Carpinteria, I have had the pleas-ure of watching each and every one of the children in the Licensed Program grow, learn and discover during their Free Play time. Free Play is special time during the day to choose any activity they would like to do. While some of our children like to read or draw, several others choose to build structures with our wooden blocks and plastic manipulatives.
One young man regularly builds structures that show how simple play can not only lead to creativity, but for Christopher this may be the start of his education in architecture or engineering. On any given day you can find Chris building; he has made airplanes from small “LEGO like” pieces with movable parts, cranes , and tracks to run marbles down. To watch Christopher and his process, as he adjusts plain wood blocks and wedges to build these structures, is to witness discovery. Christopher enjoys working with other students and teaching them about his creations. I hope this passion will translate to success for him. I think Christopher could realize his potential if he were able to have a mentor in the building or architectural fields. Until then, he will be able to build and rebuild the perfect marble track .
