For years, we’ve been dreaming of having a cargo van for transporting animals safely into our care. But as they say, “A goal without a plan is just a wish,” so we got busy. For inspiration, we downloaded a photo of our dream van, pasted our logo on the door, and hung it where we would see it every day. Next, we worked harder than ever at our fund raisers, applied for grants, and appealed to our supporters. And guess what happened? In November, we raised more money than ever from our annual rummage sale and the Paws in the Palace dinner, then we were awarded a generous grant toward the van from the Leuthold Foundation. Then we received record donations from you, our supporters. And guess what happened next? The exact van we had visualized for so long appeared on a used car list at a price we could afford! The day we went to Phoenix to purchase the van, we saw an adorable pup on the euthanasia list of a shelter there. At just ten months old, he had been labeled “aggressive” and was going to be put down. Our first stop after buying the van was the shelter, where we determined that he was simply a frightened dog who was overwhelmed at his surroundings. Fifteen minutes later, we were on the road with our very first passenger, who we aptly named “Vango.” And here he is now (on the left), snuggled up to his foster brother, Scottie, in the foster home where he will stay safe and happy until he is adopted. Vango is the first of many lives that we will be able to save with the van. We don’t give up on animals and we don’t give up on our dreams. Thank you for making this dream come true! Meet the Love of Your Life on Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day marks Kitty City’s fourth anniversary and we’re celebrating! The Prescott Petco graciously lends us space in their store for Kitty City, giving us a central location for people to meet and get to know our adoptable cats. Our celebration will include a bake sale and bonus giveaways for all adoptions taking place on February 14th between 11:00 and 2:00. Come on down to meet some of the sweetest kitties anywhere, and indulge your sweet tooth with some specially baked treats. All proceeds from the sale will help support our cat program. And There’s More Furry Fun to Come! Our Valentine Pet Photo Sessions at Whiskers Barkery have become so popular, they’ve decided to add an Easter Photo event this year! Bring your pet and create a lasting Valentine memory on February 7th or have a photo session with the Easter Bunny on March 28th. See back cover for details. Happy Anniversary Kitty City

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.”

Thank You!For years, we’ve been dreaming of having a cargo van for transporting animals safely into our care. But as they say, “A goal without a plan is just a wish,” so we got busy. For inspiration, we downloaded a photo of our dream van, pasted our logo on the door, and hung it where we would see it every day. Then we received record donations from you, our supporters. And guess what happened next? The exact van we had visualized for so long appeared on a used car list at a price we could aord!

The day we went to Phoenix to purchase the van, we saw an adorable pup on the euthanasia list of a shelter there. At just ten months old, he had been labeled “aggressive” and was going to be put down. Our rst stop after buying the van was the shelter, where we determined that he was simply a frightened dog who was overwhelmed at his surroundings. Fifteen minutes later, we were on the road with our very rst passenger, who we aptly named “Vango.” And here he is now (on the left), snuggled up to his foster brother, Scottie, in the foster home where he will stay safe and happy until he is adopted.

Vango is the rst of many lives that we will be able to save with the van. We don’t give up on animals and we don’t give up on our dreams. Thank you for making this dream come true!

Mitzi’s Kitty Chat

Oni Talks Dog

Honoraria & Memorials

Dear Mitzi, My cat, Punkin, is sneezing and sniing with a cold. Can I catch it from him?Signed, Worried Cat Mom

Dear Worried,You are right to be worried about Punkin’s symptoms. We cats can have snies and runny eyes for lots of reasons, including a cold. It would be a good idea to get Punkin to a vet for a check, but to protect yourself, it is important to wash your hands regularly and don’t touch your face. A cold virus is a zoonotic disease, which means you can get it from an animal. Keep Punkin warm, clean his face often, and give him medicine if the vet recommends it.

Sincerely, Mitzi (The Most Beautiful Calico on the Planet)

Dear Oni,My dog is afraid of children. I am afraid that he may bite one. What can be done to prevent this?Signed, Scared

Dear Scared,Dogs are often fearful of children. Most dogs can be conditioned if children approach calmly with food treats every time they meet, without trying to pet the dog. Some dogs are never comfortable with the quick, jerky movements of small children and you need to be cautious.

Kitty Corner

Rocky RoadRocky was a kitten from one of three litters that were found in the desert in Mayer and brought to Kachina Animal Hospital. He was in very poor condition, with labored breathing, runny eyes and a clogged nose, but at four weeks of age, he still just wanted to play, play, play. He was found to have bilateral pneumonia and spent the night at Kachina in an oxygen cage.

The next day he went home with his new foster mom, Suzy, where he traded the oxygen cage for her nice warm bed. Rocky may have been a little confused about his identity, since he followed Suzy around the house like a puppy and defended himself like an alpha dog with her possessive toy poodle. Before long, he was riding around on Suzy’s shoulder like a pet bird, earning him the nickname “Tweety Bird.”

While Rocky may have been exible about his place in the animal kingdom, there is one adjustment he did not seem to want to make. Every time it appeared that he was healthy enough to be neutered, he would suddenly begin sneezing again. Suzy thinks he sensed that his manhood was in danger and was feigning illness (hmm... I wonder if there is such a thing as a hypochondricat?), but each time she took him to Kachina to be checked, he truly was sick again.

Finally, after months of illness and recovery and seven rounds of antibiotics, Rocky was well enough to be neutered and receive his vaccines, and is now adopted into a home where he is happy, healthy, and very well loved.

Flower in BloomFlower was found as a stray in Gallup. Upon examination, it was discovered that she had a large hernia requiring surgery.During the surgery, the vet foundseveral internal shotgun pelletsand muscular damage whichresulted in rear right leg atrophy.

It was assumed that Flower wouldnot be able to jump higher thaninto a chair, but she surprised everyone by jumping higher and higher every day during her extremely short recovery period. Flower may have been jumpingfor joy from knowing that a better life was in store and she was right! She is now adopted into a happy home where shecan forget about her desert days.

UAF’s Pet Food Bank Receives and GivesNo one likes to think of a pet going hungry, and thanks to many generous contributions, about 700 cats and dogs are fed through UAF’s Community Pet Food Bank.

In November, Purina donated sixteen pallets of food and treats, and, thanks to the Grendell family at Flying M Ranch who let us use their heavy duty truck, we were able to transport all of it fromFlagsta in one trip.

And speaking of good things coming from Flagsta, we extend our thanks to Pete at Second Chance Center for Animals for once again donating a truck and trailer load of food for our community pets.

Special thanks to Rachel Walters and her clients at Doggie Delight Pet Grooming for their donations of food and beds for community pets, and gently used toys for UAF foster dogs. Rachel and her clients were so generous, we couldn’t t all their donations in the photo! Thank you!

The December Pet Food Bank distribution included a nice surprise for pets. Our generous donors enabled us to give out warm, comfortable pet beds in addition to the pet food! What a great feeling to know that we not only provided nutritious food to hungry pets, we also gave them a nice place for a nap after their meal.

Prescott Noon Lions Club Helps Spay/Neuter ProgramThe Prescott Noon Lions Club has granted a generous contribution to the United Animal Friends Low-Income Spay/Neuter Certicate Program as part of its annual giving. The grant will allow us to oer certicates to ten individuals to have their pet spayed or neutered at no cost to them.

The funds to support programs like ours come from the Prescott Noon Lions paper recycling project. Please remember that when you drop o your recyclable paper at the collection bins located around the tri-city area, you are supporting important causes like ours. For a list of bin locations, please go to www.prescottnoonlions.org.

Thank you, Prescott Noon Lions, for your contribution! The spay or neuter of ten pets can prevent hundreds of animals from ending up in shelters.

Tales of GenerosityPuppy Dog Tales

Lucky Day for LibbyWhen Libby left the Gallup, NM shelter on a transport headed west, she was supposed to be delivered to a shelter in Arizona. When she arrived there, she was turned away because she had demodex mange. She returned to the van but luckily for her, the rest of the dogs on that transport were coming to United Animal Friends.

After our volunteer, Lynn, met the van and unloaded the dogs that were coming into our care, the driver asked if she could take Libby too. One look was all it took. Lynn knew that black dogs have a low adoption rate, and sending a black puppy with a skin condition back to a high kill shelter would not be promising. Without a moment’s hesitation, Lynn not only took Libby in, she also took her home to foster.

Under Lynn’s care, Libby has recovered from the mange and her short hair has grown back with a delightful little wave. Lynn says she was a diamond in the rough, who has turned into a a wonderful, lively, happy puppy now ready for her forever home.

Quarters for CrittersThe 7th Grade Resource students at Granite Mountain Middle School were recently given an interesting assignment. The students were asked to research the problems of homeless pets and then design a marketing campaign to alleviate one of those areas. They chose hunger because it is a subject that their target audience - middle schoolers - can easily relate to.

The class created collage posters and wrote a persuasive pitch to engage their schoolmates and let them know how they could help in small and simple ways. Then they took their Quarters for Critters program on the road by visiting other classrooms to practice their public speaking and fundraising skills.

This school assignment provided multiple benets. It helped the students develop compassion for animals, taught them about homeless pets, fostering and overpopulation, and gave them valuable life skills for evaluating and successfully dealing with problems. And to top it all o, they raised $100 for the UAF Community Pet Food Bank!
