Hello! Thank you for taking the time to look at this brochure and for considering our Adult Faith Development and Enrichment programs here at UUFHC.

These classes, programs and retreats are designed to create opportunities to enhance our understanding of ourselves, our faith community and the world in which we live. We do this by exploring ideas, mind/body connections and spiritual inquiry.

Here at UUFHC we promote a safe environment that is respectful of each other, open to differing beliefs and mindful of the individual choices we each make on our personal faith journeys.

Several of these offerings include a suggested exchange, but please don’t let financial hardship deter you. Members and contributing friends are welcome to contact our Reverend at [email protected] for financial assistance when needed.

Childcare is available for most events upon request. Please place your r e q u e s t AT L E A S T O N E W E E K B E F O R E t h e e v e n t a t [email protected].

I hope you choose to “Lean Into” spiritual enrichment within one of these programs. As we deepen in our own understandings, we further enrich the world.

Wherever you are on your journey, this community is ready to welcome you with open hearts, minds and arms.

"Breath, Spirit, and Wind: A Day Retreat at Bon Secours Retreat Center" Marriottsville, MD

October 19, 2019, 10am - 3pm Facilitators: Jean McKendry and Beth Wood-Roig Exchange: TBA Morning snacks and lunch are provided (carpooling is available; call Beth 410-459-8339)

Do you ever feel as though you are so busy, you can't catch your breath? Our breath is always with us, of course, but the feeling that we "can't catch our breath" is real as well. In this busy world, everyone needs some unscheduled, uncommitted time at least once in a while. We invite you to come along for a day apart at the Bon Secours Retreat Center, where we will take time to relax, catch our breath, and be present to all that Mother Earth has to show us. Imagine strolling along a path among the old, tall trees around the campus, or sitting still and listening to the leaves rustle in the refreshing October breezes. You might follow the labyrinth path to its center and back out again, sit near the Koi pond, or wander in the peace garden. There will be plenty of unstructured time to explore what is calling you. For this time apart from the normal busyness of life, we hope to simply re-member our breath and our bodies, and renew our spirits for the lives we are called to lead. Join us!

Building the World We Dream About

Co-Facilitators: Rev. María McCabe and Erica Bertoli-Fineman Dates: Thurs. Sep. 19th, Thurs. Oct. 17th, Thurs. Nov. 21st Time: 6:30-8:30pm Childcare is available with 1 week notice. Exchange: none Location: sanctuary

You are invited to join us as we continue our conversation about race and ethnicity in our world today. At a time when racialized social policies target people of color in the United States – including such efforts as mass incarceration and punitive immigration – how might we harness the principles of our faith tradition to “build the world we dream about”? This series will follow our monthly spiritual themes for 2019. Thus, our September session will coincide with the theme of ‘expectation,’ and focus on understanding the reality of white privilege. For those of us who identify as white, how do we expect to be treated in our society and how is that different for our siblings of color? In October, the spiritual theme is ‘belonging’ and we will focus on what it takes to ‘belong’ and thrive in today’s world if we carry a marginalized identity. We will hear testimony from different voices and experiences. In November, the theme is ‘attention.’ In this session we will learn what is meant by the term ‘white supremacy culture’ which is very different from the tenets of white supremacist organizations. What can we do to make our own community more inclusive, equitable and just?

Facilitator: Rev. María Uitti McCabe Dates: September 26, 2019 – May 28, 2020 (Second and Fourth Thursdays) Time: 11:30am – 1:00pm Exchange: none Childcare is available with 1 week notice.

Where does our faith call us in the 21st century?

At the 2019 General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association, we were asked to reflect deeply on the following questions: what sustains us in our faith as we do the work of justice? What from our faith helps to guide our lives? And “What’s our personal commitment and stake to transforming and living our values and benefits?

Join us for real conversation about the future of our faith and our beloved UUFHC. Our Unitarian Universalist values are need more than ever in today’s world. How will we respond?

Facilitator: Rev. María Uitti McCabe Dates: September 3, 2019 – May 19, 2020 (First and Third Tuesdays) Time: 7:00 – 8:30pm Exchange: none Childcare is available with 1 week notice.

You are invited to join us as we embark on our third year of the Soul Matters Sharing Circle. This is a wonderful time to share connection with each other and go deeper with our monthly worship themes.

Like a favorite reading from our hymnal says, ‘alone our vision is too narrow to see all that must be seen, and our strength too limited to do all that must be done. Together, our vision widens and our strength is renewed.’ From the Soul Matters Sharing Circle website https://www.soulmatterssharingcircle.com

During our time together on the first Tuesday of the month, we will explore the monthly questions that the Soul Matters program poses for us, and engage in related spiritual exercises. On the third Tuesday, we will go more deeply into the spiritual practices that support us in our daily lives, including music, moving meditation, story-telling and play. We will take our cue from the UUA’s program entitled Spirit in Practice.

Consider joining us. It is a wonderful time to slow down, catch our breath and simply BE with one another.

If you are interested, or have questions about this program, please reach out to Rev. María McCabe at [email protected], or stop by my office for a chat!

Kadampa Buddhism Meditation Classes

… right here at UUFHC! Contact: 410-243-3837 or www.meditationmd.org Dates: Tuesdays, 7:00pm – 8:15pm in Room #4 Exchange: $12.00 ($8 for students, seniors 60+, and unemployed)

!

The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful, we will be free from worries and mental discomfort, and so we will experience true happiness; but if our mind is not peaceful, we will find it very difficult to be happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions.

Classes are lead by Nadia Malik.

She is the World Peace Cafe manager at KMC Maryland and has been practicing Kadam Dharma since 2011. The depth of her dedication to study and practice is obvious in her teaching, where she skillfully includes many practical examples of how to sincerely apply Buddha’s teachings to modern daily life.
