Unit 9

People in society define psychopath as a loose term while psychologists know the true

difference. It is more about the dispositional tendencies instead of what crimes people commit.

Media has played a part of defining society’s view of psychopaths. These characters could be

self-centered and inherently cruel. Few times can they been seen as well-established and

successful people, which can be the case in many incidences. Anti-social personality disorder

can be similar to this. It comes from seeing deviancy in childhood continue into adulthood. The

PCL-R is used to detect behavior deviance. It can help show the intricate thoughts. Being

impulsive, mean, and bold can lead you to become a psychopath.

Mental disorders do not always get the validity that they deserve. Postpartum depression

is an example of this treatment. Mood disorders can leave you with a loss of interest, diminished

interest in pleasurable activities, weight change, insomnia, agitation, fatigue, feeling worthless,

or suicidal tendencies. These are considered mental disorders when they are constant or

repeating. It is in human nature to feel down or depressed, it is unhealthy when it happens

constantly. There are several effective treatments. Bipolar disorder is when extreme emotions

hinder a person’s ability to function in the normal world. Medications are used to treat this but

the side effects are physical sickness and becoming tired.

Anxiety is an everyday occurrence, but can cause our bodies to become unhealthy if it is

excessive. There is the anxiety that pushes us forward which we would not be able to live and

Page 2: unit9.docx

progress without, and there’s the immobilizing fear that comes with the unhealthy. Your risk of

having anxiety comes from biological, psychological, and specific factors. Specific

vulnerabilities are the personal experiences we have. Memories and trauma can cause us to

develop anxiety at any point in life. GAD is a disorder when you feel out of control and go

through many scenarios. They feel if they are prepared they have nothing to fear. The problem

with GAD comes from over obsessing. They can focus so intensely on one portion of a problem

that they do not finish an important project. There are many medications that can “fix” anxiety.

There is also cognitive behavior therapies. CBT helps to teach skills that change problematic

solving. Not worrying so much or learning how to worry in a more effective way is a good

outcome for the patients of these therapies.

Those with schizophrenia usually stand out from a group of people. Their behavior and

social skills are a bit off from the rest of the world. They can have delusions or false believes.

There are many people with this disease that believe people are out to get them. That they are

being followed or watched. There are also delusions of higher powers where people believe they

have super powers of some kind. They think they actually see people or places in their

hallucinations. They believe the world around them is making sense and see perfectly fine, when

in fact they don’t speak clearly or write in English. There are a few medication treatments for

schizophrenia or shock therapy has been use in the past. (WC 524)

I thought that the fact that many people do not find validity in mental illnesses strange.

Medications can help fix people if their condition is serious enough. In some cases of mental

illnesses there is a healthy dose of it. Anxiety symptoms seem to find their way into my life, but

in the end they go away. I know that I don’t have anxiety but it does help me to do things.
