    GLOBAL WARMING

Since running for president in the 2000 election in the United States, Al Gore has devoted his life to an issue he feelsstrongly about: saving the Earth from the alarming threat of global warming. He has prepared a presentation on the subjectand has delivered it in hundreds of cities around the world. His Oscar-winning film,An Inconvenient Truth, is basically afilmed version of this presentation.

II An Inconvenient Truth premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006, earning $49 million in the first year after itopened in theatres around the world. Gore wrote a book to go along with the film, which reached number 1 on the

prestigious best-seller list of the New York Times. Gore donated all the profits from the film and the book to groupsworking for global warming awareness and education.

III What exactly is global warming? Carbon dioxide (CO2) exists naturally in the Earths atmosphere. It keeps our planetcomfortably warm by holding in some of the suns heat. However, the fuels we burn today release too much CO 2 into theatmosphere, which traps too much heat. In his film, Gore uses a huge graph to show how carbon dioxide levels andtemperatures have risen dramatically in recent years and explains how this will affect our planet.

IV Gore claims that the results are going to be catastrophic if we dont cut down on the amount of fuel we burn. Meltingglaciers in Greenland and Antarctica will cause sea levels to rise and lead to worldwide flooding. Storms and hurricanes, stronger than any the world has ever known, will destroy whole cities. Intense heatwaves, drought and wildfires are goingto hit entire countries. In addition, we will be seeing the extinction of many species of animals and plants as the climategets warmer. According to Gore, there is still time to save the Earth and life as we know it if we make immediate, drasticchanges in our lifestyle. If we do nothing or dont do enough, we will have allowed a disaster to occur.

V On 10th December, 2006, Al Gore was honoured for his work when he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his contributionto bringing global warming to the attention of the worlds public. The Nobel committee called Gore probably the singleindividual who has done the most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted tocombat global warming. Gore, for his part, promised to continue the fight.
