August 14, 2012Dear Jane,
Have you ever read a book and became interested in a character? In the novel The Hobbit, JRR Tolkien uses imagery and dialog to describe Gandalf as a unique, magical and a well known character.
Imagery is used to describe Gandalf as unique. About Gandalf, Tolkien writes, “He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which his long white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots” (4). The way Gandalf is dressed is not common. Also, the length of his beard adds to his uniqueness.
Through the use of dialog, I can tell that Gandalf is both magical and well known even to hobbits who do not get out much. The hobbit Bilbo exclaims, “Gandalf, Gandalf! Good gracious me! Not the wondering wizard that gave Old Took a pair of magic diamonds that fastened themselves and never came undone until ordered?” (5). In these words exclaimed by someone who has just met him, Gandalf’s character is developed. He is extraordinary!
If you are looking for a good novel to read, one with an especially interesting character, try Tolkien’s story The Hobbit. You just might find a character that you will enjoy reading about!
All the Best, Amy
