Maths- Past, Present and Future: Scales
I have worked with others to explore, and present our findings on, how mathematics impacts on
the world and the important part it has played in advances and inventions.
Scales at home
At home you will have many things which use a scale. They can include measuring jugs, rulers and
even analogue clocks. Some scales are on a straight line and some use a curve.
How many things can you find at home which use a scale? Perhaps you might want to take some
photos.
What does each thing measure and what unit of measure does it use? (e.g. centimetres)
Can you work out its relationship to other unit of measure? (e.g. how many mm in a cm, etc)
Some measuring instruments have two scales on them: metric and the old imperial scales (which
used inches, pounds, etc)? Can you find any examples of this?
Why do you think we use metric measurements now?
Have you got anything at home which measures things digitally which might have used a scale in
the past? eg I have a digital thermometer.
Do you think we will use scales to measure things in the future or will everything be measured
digitally?
Do you have anything at home which uses negative numbers on its scale?
Scales in the World of Work
Ask an adult what scales they might use at home and in their job. Find out as much as you can
about the scales they use and why it is important in their work.
What other jobs might people do where they use scales?
If you are struggling with this one, you can email me and ask me how I used to use different
scales when I worked in the laboratory.
Scales and our Topic
When measuring earthquakes, scientists use a seismograph. This records how much shake there
was. They used to record how strong the earthquake was using the Richter scale.
Can you find out more about this?
One of the things you will learn is that it uses a logarithmic or log scale. Please do not worry too
-
much about what this means. Scientists use log scales when there is a large range of quantities.
Perhaps the easiest way to understand it is that each number on the scale means tens times the
number before it.
Nowadays Scientists use the Moment Magnitude Scale instead of the Richter Scale. Why do
they use this instead?
Famous Scottish Mathematicians and Scientists and Scales
James Napier
James Napier was the Scottish scientist who invented the Logarithmic scale.
Can you find out more about him?
James Watt
In your home you have a meter which measures how much watts you use. Watts measure
electrical power and are also measured on a scale. The measurement for electrical power was
given its name after a Scottish inventor named James Watt.
What did he invent? Why was this so important?
William Thomson, Lord Kelvin
William Thomson was Irish, but he did most of his work at the University of Glasgow. He
invented an important scale known as Kelvins.
What does the Kelvin Scale measure?
Why is this different from other temperature scales?
Problem Solving (School Invaders)
Some tips to help you with the problem solving:
Prime numbers are whole numbers which can only be divided by 1 or by themselves eg
2,3,5,7,11,13
Composite numbers are whole numbers which can be divided by at least 1 number other
than 1 and itself 4,6,8,9
1 is neither a prime nor a composite number.
To reduce or simplify a fraction you must divide both the top (Numerator) and the bottom
(denominator) by the same number eg 6/8 = ¾ (I have divided both top and bottom by 2) or 3/9=
1/3 (I have divided both top and bottom by 3)

MATH MYSTERY:
CASE of the SCHOOL INVADERS
Date: _________________________
The students of Mathhattan Elementary recently returned to school from the holidays to
find that their school environment has been invaded by slimy aliens from the planet
Geometron! These school invaders are making students feel squished and miserable as
they continue to use their desks, seats, and playground to camp in.
Katrina, a student of Mathhattan Elementary, cried, “There is alien slime everywhere! It’s
so gross! My classroom stinks like smelly cheese, and one of the aliens is using my desk as
a bed!”
Another student, named William, complained, “ I was really excited to come back to
school. But, sharing our classrooms with these aliens is making it hard to enjoy learning,
especially when my seat is all sticky and my lunch gets eaten by them!”
Mayor Patrick spoke with the leader of the aliens earlier this morning. He attempted to
persuade the aliens to vacate the school and return to their planet, however Patrick
was asked to deliver something very important to the invaders as a condition to give the
school completely back to the students of Mathhattan Elementary.
Post discussion, the Mayor released the following statement, “The reason why the aliens
have invaded the school is because they are simply stuck there. They crash landed
nearby and lost their transponder, which was their only communication device to the
mothership. The leader is very angry with the alien responsible for losing it, but that
doesn’t help the situation. He has requested that we help them find this transponder
device, then they will be able to contact the mothership to pick them up and return to
their home planet.”
The police have begun their search, but since Mathhattan is so large, they are struggling
to locate where this transponder could be. The longer it takes them to find this device,
the slimier and smellier the school is getting. The students are already beginning to wear
gas masks!
MATH DETECTIVE NEEDED TO HELP FIND THE SCHOOL INVADERS’ TRANSPONDER!!!
The police have made a list of all the possible locations that the transponder could be
found, however they need a super detective with math skills to quickly solve where the
device is located. Help solve this mystery before the students start to stick to the
classroom floor!
