Unit Description This Unit is a Level 300 unit that integrates work and learning for second and/or third year students. It carries 12.5 Credit Points (equivalent to one unit), and is an elective unit in undergraduate degrees, or combined undergraduate degrees, offered by the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics. You will undertake a corporate internship placement to complete a project/s and or related tasks within a business organisation that employs or trains staff in the public, private, or not-for-profit sectors in Tasmania. You will be assigned an Internship Mentor from within the organisation who will assist you during your work placement. Specific work projects, assignments and related duties you will undertake will be determined in consultation between yourself, the nominated representative/s of the internship business organisation (your Internship Mentor), and the TSBE. This will ensure the appropriate standards are maintained and that the work project/s and related tasks relate to one or more of your study majors. For the duration of the internship period, the Internship Coordinator or the Course Coordinator will liaise closely with you and the Internship Mentor.

Prior Knowledge &/or Skills OR Pre-Requisite Unit(s) Completion of at least three (3) semesters of full time undergraduate study, completing Level 100, 200 and/or 300 units towards one or more of your study majors within the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics (or a combined degree). The internship project/s and or related tasks must correlate with one or more of your study majors and students offered internships must be either *enrolled in their (2nd) second semester of their (2nd) second year of study or be at any stage of their (3rd) third year of study AND who have achieved at least a Credit average result. Students who have not achieved a Credit average, may be eligible for internships through an interview with the Course Coordinator to determine comparable skills for entry to the program (and where relevant internship opportunities are offered). As the application process is competitive, there are no guarantees that all applicants will obtain a placement.

Enrolment in the Unit Enrolment in the unit will be possible only after completion of all the following stages in the order in which they are listed:

1. An enrolment check to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria* 2. Online application received by Course Coordinator for an internship project/placement

advertised on the Corporate Internship website (Note: you are also encouraged to source your own internship, subject to approval by the Course Coordinator)

3. Attendance at an interview conducted by the host organisation offering the internship 4. Offer of an internship placement by business organisation following the interview, and

5. Enrolment in Corporate Internship study unit: BAA323/BAA323 = 12.5 Credit Points = 1 day p/w per semester internship placement (or equivalent as approved by the Course Coordinator).

Unless there are exceptional circumstances, students should not enrol in this unit after the end of week two of semester, as the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics (TSBE) cannot guarantee that:

any extra assistance will be provided by the teaching team in respect of work covered in the period prior to enrolment; and

penalties will not be applied for late submission of any piece or pieces of assessment that were due during this period.

When does the unit commence? The unit’s teaching schedule commences in the week beginning 11 July, 2016. Materials relevant to the unit will be available to students on MyLO prior to the start of semester.

Learning to use MyLO When you log into MyLO, you will see a unit called Getting Started with MyLO. Enter this unit to learn more about MyLO, and to practice using its features.

MyLO Expectations 1. Students are expected to maintain the highest standards of conduct across all modes of

communication with staff and other students. Penalties may be imposed if the Internship Coordinator believes that, in any instance or mode of communication, your language or content is inappropriate or offensive. MyLO is a public forum. Due levels of respect, professionalism and high ethical standards are expected of students at all times.

2. Submission of assessment tasks via MyLO presumes that students have read, understood and abide by the requirements relating to academic conduct, and in particular, those requirements relating to plagiarism. All work submitted electronically is presumed to be “signed-off” by the student submitting as their own work. Any breach of this requirement will lead to student misconduct processes.

3. MyLO is an Internet service for teaching and learning provided by the University. It is expected

that you check your units in MyLO for updates at least once a day.

Student Feedback via eVALUate At the conclusion of this unit, you will be asked to provide online responses to a number of matters relating to the learning and teaching within the unit. You are asked to respond honestly to these questions, as all information received is used to enhance the delivery of future offerings.

Details of Teaching Arrangements There will be a compulsory 2 hour seminar in Week 1 or 2 of the semester. At this seminar (video- linked between Hobart, Launceston and Cradle Coast as required) you will be introduced to the program and other interns, obtain advice about assessment tasks and requirements and review relevant UTAS policy relating to the internship programs.

At the commencement of your internship placement, you will attend an initial meeting with the Internship Mentor. At the meeting a program of work will be determined involving the completion of one or more major projects that shall be agreed upon together with the performance of any related duties. Thereafter you will commence work on the project/s and related duties as directed by the Internship Mentor.

Time spent by you completing the major project/s and related duties in the workplace will be the equivalent of one (1) day per week for a 13-week period (13 days).

You are required to attend the business premises of the Internship Mentor or such other place as

may be directed by the Mentor on each of the 13 days during business hours from 9.00am to

5.00pm or during such other period of eight (8) hours as may be agreed with the Internship

Mentor and the Internship Coordinator in accordance with the agreed schedule of work. During

the period of the internship, you will be under the direct supervision of the Internship Mentor and

you will carry out such activities as may be directed by them in connection with the major project/s

and related duties.

PLACEMENT VISIT AND CONTACT

The Internship Coordinator or Course Coordinator will liaise with the Internship Mentor and with

you during the period of the internship and will make at least one visit to you both at the internship

workplace midway through your internship at an agreed time. Additional visits can be arranged if

required. You are expected to contact the Internship Coordinator or Course Coordinator on a

regular basis via email, as necessary, and to respond to all requests from the Internship Coordinator

or Course Coordinator for information about the internship in a timely manner. All communication

relating to the internship must be through your UTAS email account.

In the past, there have been significant issues where this has occurred, resulting in UTAS being blacklisted by these email providers for a period of up to one month. Assessment Item 1 – Reflective Journal Entries Task Descriptions:

You will be required to present three (3) Reflective Journal entries in respect of corporate internship activities undertaken. Reflective Journals: Ten (10) topic specific questions will be published to MyLO at the start of semester with each question focusing on a specific theme related to your internship experience and your employability. You are required to provide a minimum of two (2) originating reflective journal entries to topic specific questions of your choice, along with a minimum of one (1) responding journal entry in response to a fellow student’s entry. You may complete all journal entries at any time during the semester - but all must be completed prior to midnight, Friday of Week 11. 10% of the total assessment will be allocated to these three (3) reflective journal entries.

Assessment Item 2 – Workshop, Online Quiz, & Poster Presentation

Task Description: Week 11 or 12 - a one-day workshop will be held near the end of the

semester - during week 11 (or week 12) in which you will reflect and present your internship experiences, begin designing your poster presentation, and

complete individual and group activites

reflecte on, and present own learning / project outcomes

provide feedback to, and interacte with others within workshop discussions

Week 12 - online MyLO Quiz will be available for completion by student in the week following the Workshop day. The MYLO Quiz will encompass some content from MyLO topic question and information from activities covered in the Workshop day and will comprise at least:

10 questions - with Multiple Choice and Short Answer questions.

The online quiz will be due Midnight of Friday Week 12 (or available for at least one week post-workshop).

Week 13 – Poster presentation at TSBE. All relevant workshop information will also be provided on MyLO, including:

guidelines for preparing posters and presentations, links to relevant websites illustrating how to create effective posters, and videos demonstrating how poster sessions works in practice.

You will design and produce a poster which will provide an overview of your internship project, your experiences and your reflections on the skills, knowledge and abilities you have acquired. Posters will be displayed in a Poster Presentation Session at the TSBE. Business mentors and academics from TSBE and the broader University community will be invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

Participation in a Poster Presentation Session requires you to engage in interactive conversation with your audience. You will be expected to talk through your poster and discuss your experiences and learning. You may need to provide explanation about your project to audiences with little, or extensive, knowledge about your project topic. For this reason, the workshop prior to the poster presentation session will provide guidance for poster design and layout, presentation styles, clarity of explanation, and more.

Assessment Item 3 – Business Resport Task Description: Nearing the conclusion of the corporate internship, you will be required to

submit a Business Report synthesising the reflections from the project. This report should include the following sections: a structured Business Report (business documentation template) an overview of your project a description of the methodology / approach undertaken to complete

your project (including any references to relevant literature) an analysis and critical reflection of the challenges / issues / solutions

and experiences of the project a description of outcomes expected, and met, within the project.

Assessment Item 4 – Mentor Evaluation Task Description: During the course of the internship, the Internship Mentor will evaluate the

work and activities undertaken by you in connection with the major project(s). Your Internship Mentor will regularly advise the Internship Coordinator and yourself of their evaluations of your performance and these evaluations may be provided either verbally or in writing, or both. You are expected to comply with any and all reasonable directions provided by the Internship Mentor in connection with the activities undertaken as part of the corporate internship project(s) and any other related duties. Submission of Assessment Items

Lodging Assessment Items Assignments must be submitted electronically through the relevant assignment drop box in MyLO. You must ensure that your name, student ID, unit code, tutorial time and tutor’s name (if applicable) are clearly marked on the first page. If this information is missing, the assignment will not be accepted and, therefore, will not be marked. Where relevant, the Internship Coordinator may also request you to submit a paper version of your assignment. You will be advised by the Internship Coordinator of the appropriate process relevant to your campus (Hobart, Launceston or Cradle Coast). Please remember that you are responsible for lodging your assessment items on or before the due date and time. We suggest you keep a copy. Even in a perfect system, items sometimes go astray.

Late Assessment and Extension Policy In this Policy: 1. (a) ‘day’ or ‘days’ includes all calendar days, including weekends and public holidays;

(b) ‘late’ means after the due date and time; and

(c) ‘assessment items’ includes all internal non-examination based forms of assessment

2. This Policy applies to all students enrolled in TSBE Units at whatever Campus or geographical

location.

3. Students are expected to submit assessment items on or before the due date and time specified

in the relevant Unit Outline. The onus is on the student to prove the date and time of

submission.

4. Students who have a medical condition or special circumstances may apply for an extension.

Requests for extensions should, where possible, be made in writing to the Internship

Coordinator or Course Coordinator on or before the due date. Students will need to provide

independent supporting documentation to substantiate their claims.

5. Late submission of assessment items will incur a penalty of 10% of the total marks possible for

that piece of assessment for each day the assessment item is late unless an extension had been

granted on or before the relevant due date.

6. Assessment items submitted more than five (5) days late will not be accepted.

7. Academic staff do NOT have the discretion to waive a late penalty, subject to clause 4 above.

Review of Assessment and Results Review of Assessment is available to all students once the University has released the final result for a unit. If you are dissatisfied with your final result, you may apply to have it reviewed. Review of Assessment consists of re-marking the final exam (where applicable), checking the addition of all marks, and a check to ensure that all marks have been included in the final result. Applications for a review of assessment are due within 10 working days of the release of the final result in the unit. If you have passed the unit you must pay a $50 fee. Academic Misconduct and Plagiarism

Academic misconduct includes cheating, plagiarism, allowing another student to copy work for an assignment or an examination, and any other conduct by which a student: (a) seeks to gain, for themselves or for any other person, any academic advantage or advancement

to which they or that other person are not entitled; or (b) improperly disadvantages any other student.

Students engaging in any form of academic misconduct may be dealt with under the Ordinance of Student Discipline. This can include imposition of penalties that range from a deduction/cancellation of marks to exclusion from a unit or the University. 30% of the total assessment for this unit comprises an evaluation of your performance by your Internship Mentor. It is recommended that the Internship Mentor award a mark out of 5 for each of the criteria at the completion of the internship. An electronic version of the form will be submitted to the Internship Coordinator and marks aggregated to an overall mark worth 30%. Internship Mentors are encouraged to provide comments based on their experiences working with their intern and to share these with them thus contributing to the student’s learning.
