Key LocationsThe Admiral Hawke – Sunbury

This location will be used to film an over the shoulder shot of a boyfriend and girlfriend talking. Although this scene could technically be executed in another location, we want to film a scene in a pub, as this is conventional of the soap opera genre. The majority of soap operas have a pub where the residents come together or dramatic events unfold. For example, in Eastenders key scenes are often filmed in ‘The Vic’ or in the ‘Rovers Return Inn’ in Coronation Street. This is because most soap operas explore the representation of the working class and, as most viewers are also part of this demographic, they can relate to visiting a location such as the Pub and hearing about the gossip and drama in the community.

Sunbury Park

A variety of scenes will be filmed in this location. We have chosen this park in particular because of its location. Sunbury Park is located next to ‘The Admiral Hawke’ Pub’, meaning on filming day we can be time efficient and waste less time travelling from location to location. The park also has open spaces, which is ideal for the pan of the dead victims body. However, it also has more closed spaces that are surrounded with trees, which will be needed for the drug exchange scene, and the shallow focus shot of the male character.

Christie’s House –Feltham

All of the domestic scenes such as the kitchen scene of the carrot being cut, the shot of the boy and girl snuggling up on the sofa and the shot of the bloody t-shirt being placed into the washing machine, will be filmed in this location. We have chosen to film some of our scenes in a home environment, as the soap opera genre is characterised by the “...the home, the family, domestic tribulations and the strong woman” according to Rebecca Feasey. We want to “repeat” (Neale) these representations, to ensure that ‘Upon Thames’ comes across as a realistic soap.

Drama Studio – School

This location will be used to film all the scenes using the ‘guess who’ board game. Using a drama studio with all the professional equipment, will allow us to manipulate things like the lighting manually to create a dramatic mood. For example, we can dim the lights or create a spotlight effect if necessary.
