Richards, Jean. A Fruit is a Suitcase for Seeds. First Avenue Editions, 2006. This book provides an excellent introduction to seeds, their purpose, and growth. Illustrations across the bottom of the pages visually emphasize the suitcase theme.

Shannon, George. White Is for Blueberry. Greenwillow Books, 2005. Text and illustrations partner to upset the reader’s preconceived notions about color in nature. The opening page depicts a black crow, but the text reads, “Pink is for crow….” The page turn reveals a spread showing a nest of newborn birds and the conclusion: “…when it has just hatched from its egg.”

Ayres, Katherine. Up, Down, & Around. Candlewick, 2008. Simple rhyming text and bustling illustrations combine in this cheerful book full of plants and prepositions. A repeated theme in the rhymed couplets is the direction plants grow: “Broccoli grows up. / Beets grow down. / Green beans climb / around and around.”

Saltzberg, Barney. All Around the Seasons. Candlewick, 2010. This colorful picture book highlights the wonderful things that make each season of the year unique. Lively verses and exuberant images show children finding fun in everyday pastimes, from dancing through a sprinkler to building a snowman.

McClure, Nikki. To Market, To Market. Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2011. We follow a mother and son to the weekly market. As they check off items on their shopping list, we learn how each particular food was grown or produced, from its earliest stages to how it ended up at the market.

Rylant, Cynthia, and McClure, Nikki. All in a Day. Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2009. This picture-book poem discusses the many things that can be done in a day: plant a seed, make a wish, live a life. The detailed illustrations were each cut from a single piece of black paper using an X-Acto® knife.
