What is a pronoun?

•Pronoun: a word that takes the place of a noun.

•Subject pronoun: a pronoun that takes the place of a noun as the subject of a sentence.

Subject Pronouns

•Singular: I, you, he, she, it▫Mary went to the store. ▫She went to the store.

•Plural: we, you, they ▫Jane and Pamela play basketball. ▫They play basketball.

Examples

•Replace the underlined subjects with pronouns.

•Leo and Emily cooked.

•Leo bought the fruit.

•Emily served egg rolls.

Fix it- rewrite the 8 underlined nouns as pronouns:

I am proud to have been Alex’s swim coach this year. Ron White and Alex have worked hard. Ms. Pinza has told me she gets to school early and sees Alex at the pool. The pool is already busy. There Alex is, doing laps. Who noticed the backstroke flaw? That was Ms. Pinza. Alex and I worked together, and Alex improved. Alex is a fine team player. The strongest swimmers on our team are Ron and Alex. The team unanimously chose Alex Sachs as their captain.

What is an object pronoun?

•Object pronoun: can replace nouns used after action verbs or after the words to, for, with, in, or at.

•Me, him, her, us, and them are object pronouns.

•You and it can be subject/object pronouns.

Examples

•Mrs. Stone drove Clyde. ▫Mrs. Stone drove him.

•Beth went with you and I to the store. ▫Beth went with us to the store.

Using Object Pronouns

•Do not use an object pronoun when you need a subject pronoun. ▫Him and me like that car. ▫He and I like that car.

▫Imagine you were saying the subjects alone.

▫He likes that car; I like that car. ▫You wouldn’t say him likes that car or

me likes that car.

Using Object Pronouns

•Object pronouns are used even if there are more than one object.

▫Mary thanked him and Mrs. Stone. ▫Mary thanked he and Mrs. Stone. ▫If it helps, take “and Mrs. Stone” away.

What is a double subject?

•Sometimes people use two subjects – a noun and a pronoun – incorrectly.
