1. What does the table describe? What verb tense is

used?

2. Did the literacy rates of the country vary considerably

during this period?

3. Did the literacy rates in the Lowlands and Midlands

increase or decrease over the period?

4. What can you say about the literacy rates in the

Lowlands between 1998 and 2004? And from 2004 to

2007?

5. What can you say about the number of literate people

in the Midlands over the ten-year period?

6. What do you think about the number of literate people

in the Highlands in the period from 1998 to 2007?

(How much of the population was literate in 1998 and

how did the literacy rates change in the following

Page 12: Unit 5 - Writing Prepared by: Ms. Lan Phuong I. Warm-up Find out the Topic of the lesson: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ describe changes in numbers in a table years.

III. Practice (Task 2)The table describes the trends of literacy rates in

Sunshine country from 1998 to 2007. As can be seen, the literacy rates of the country

varied considerately during this period. It is clear from the table that the literacy rates in the

Lowlands and Midlands increased over the period. In the Lowlands, there was a gradual rise in the number of literate people between 1998 and 2004; but from 2004 to 2007, this rate went up sharply from 56% to 95%. The number of literate people in the Midlands showed a steady increase over the ten-year period (from 70% in 1998 to 85% in 2007).

On the contrary, the number of literate people in the Highlands declined steadily. In 1998, 50 % of the population was literate, but this number decreased gradually in the following years – It was only 30% in 2007.

This data may help researchers make suitable plans for educational development in each area of the country.
