the future of bridge. The new class schedule includes The Club series, taught by Dianne Cox, starts Tuesday, April 1. The Diamond series begins Monday March 31, and will be taught by Helene Fornia. Look for the start of Sunday Afternoon Swiss. The plan is to have this format once a month. Beginning date TBA. Anyone interested in taking the TAP? We have several people signed up but need a few more for Dee Berry to hold a class at ESBC. Please call Dianne ASAP at the club, 425-881-6110, or email her at [email protected]. We are very excited about this special 2 day seminar and hope you’ll join us and become an accredited teacher. Dennis, Dianne, Mary and I would like to thank our players for all their support and well wishes. It really is helping us get through these hectic first few months. We all bring something different to the table and love working together. We want to share our love of the game with everyone who comes through our door and make ESBC a fun place to play a good game of duplicate bridge. Elaine Vona

Bridge Buddies March 2008Bridge Buddies is a group organized to provide a welcoming social and competitive bridge playing opportunity for players who have recently completed a basic class or have equivalent experience. There are no master points involved. There are often more experienced players who are kind enough to share their knowledge, and we welcome them.

We meet on the first and third Saturday evenings of the month at the Eastside Bridge Center in Redmond. We have Potluck at 6:00 PM and play at 7:00 PM. The potluck is optional, but the food is great, we have a good time and nearly everyone participates.

We provide coffee and tea, or you can bring your own non-alcoholic beverage.

We can easily accommodate single players, but prefer that you come with a partner. We play tournament style

duplicate bridge. We use bidding boxes and keep score, so that we become accustomed to the kind of play at ACBL tournaments. We usually have 7 or more tables and play about 18 hands.

The charge is $4.00 per player. No advance arrangements are necessary, just come as often as you can.

If you provide your email address, you will get regular announcements of our games, hand records and from time to time information on bidding and playing.

If you have questions or need directions, email Roger at: [email protected] call (425) 820-7454

Mercercrest Bridge ClubThe Mercercrest Bridge Club congratulates the new owners of the Eastside Bridge Club and wishes them much success with their new endeavor.

January and February were super months for our club. Attendance was high even with the cold, sometimes rainy, nights. Newcomers to our club included Stan Harris, Joyce Williamson, Maria Schwager, Richard Farrar, and Brady Allen.

The Mercercrest Bridge Club continues to be the place to be on Tuesday nights. We average 20 tables. The bridge is extremely competitive yet stratified, the snacks are plentiful, and the camaraderie is exceptional. It’s kind of a “weekly party”! Best of all, it’s still the least expensive pairs game in town. With the ACBL increasing the amount of the masterpoint awards for games with fifteen tables or more, the awards for placing are quite substantial at our club.

We meet in the lower level of the Mercer Island Congregational Church. The game starts at 7pm and the cost is $5.00. For partnerships and more information, please contact Marsha Rayton at 206 601-5211 or [email protected].

North Seattle Bridge ClubAttention duffers: The North Seattle Bridge club of-fers a Wednesday game at 10:30 am that is open, and stratified and geared for new-to-duplicate players. The game is somewhat slower, only 21 boards are played, but the price is right: $4.00. The welcome mat is out for everyone so enough tables can par-ticipate to be fun and competitive. Bring your own partner or call me (Vicky) and I’ll find one for you.

Free coffee, tea and snacks every day, Monday through Friday. (Every Thursday in the month of May, games will cost only $5.00.) All games start promptly at 10:30 am. There is plenty of parking at the back of the church. Our club manager, Corey Pe-terson, helps make the game friendly. Corey makes every effort to accommodate special needs and often posts the final scores before you can ask for them, a plus for those in a hurry.

Pairs arriving late may not be allowed to join the game by the director if the addition of a pair would cause delays for other pairs.

More information can be obtained by calling Club President Dan Tuttle at (206) 992-3351 or by emailing him at [email protected]. The game costs $3.00 and includes light snacks.

Seattle Bridge CenterThe pro-am game held Saturday March 8th was a huge success. We had 16 tables with players who were not life masters matched with more experienced players. Thank you to Shawn Abernathy for all her work matching the partnerships and to Sharon Erwin who did the boards and hand records. Everyone had a good time and hopefully some information was

President’s CornerOur Sweetheart Sectional was held in early February and was a big success. Attendance was up, with 309 tables in play. (This is our third consecutive three-day sectional that has cracked the 300 table barrier!) Henry Lortz has the early lead for the Microsoft trophy, but there are still three more sectionals this year, with plenty of masterpoints for everyone. The facility at Vasa Park had easy freeway access, plenty of parking, and space for our growing tournaments. We will be returning to Vasa in late October for our fall sectional.

Next on our sectional schedule is our 299’er sectional, to be held at the Aqua Club in Kenmore. Both pair and team events will be held over the weekend of April 12 and 13. If you have less than 300 masterpoints, this is a great opportunity to earn silver points in a relaxed atmosphere, as well as to enjoy both free bridge lectures and our Seattle Unit hospitality.

Following that on our sectional schedule is our Knockout Sectional, to be held at the Renton Community Center over the Memorial Day weekend. This is traditionally our largest sectional, so we hope to see you there.

On the business side of our unit, 2007 was a relatively “flat” year in terms of finances. We had an excess of revenues over expenses of a few hundred dollars. Tournament costs are rising, and we have worked to keep our tournaments an attractive experience for our players.

As always, your unit board is here to serve you, our members. We are always looking for volunteers interested in helping to provide a great bridge environment. Please let us know if you are interested in assisting in any way.

See you at the table,Linda

helpful.

The monthly unit game is at SBC Swiss Teams Sunday May 4th at 1 PM and 6PM. Reservations please. The second international fund game is Thursday May 8th at 10:30AM. Hand records are provided and many more master points awarded. Club championships every session Monday May 12th through Sunday May 18th. Lots more points awarded with no additional charge.

SBC will be closed Friday May 23rd through Monday May 26th for the Seattle Knockout Sectional and Memorial Day weekend. Good luck to everyone at the tournament.

Monday and Tuesday morning games are still ½ price games. Entry fee is just $3.Unlimited free parking with handicap access.

Mini-McKenney Placewinners From Seattle Unit 446 - 2007 To accord recognition to a broader spectrum of players, the ACBL has divided membership by masterpoints into thirteen categories from beginner (0-5) to those with 10,000 and greater masterpoint holdings. For calendar year 2007, the following Seattle unit members placed in the top 100 among all ACBL members [American, Canadian, Mexican, Bermudian, et al]. The listings reflect the category the individuals rank and the points won for the year. In only the listed categories did Seattle members place in the top 100.

The Seattle Unit Jabon Trophy Competition is for the unit member beginning the calendar year with fewer than twenty masterpoints, who then accumulates the greatest number of points in that year’s unit sectional competitions. Dan Perry has assumed the early lead in this competition after totaling an impressive first tournament total of 4.82 points at the Sweetheart Sectional. He has less than a two point lead on second-place, however, and the competition threatens to heat up beginning with the 299’er sectional April 12-13 and continuing through the three remaining open sectionals that the unit sponsors – Memorial Day; Suntan; and Fall.

The Microsoft Trophy – including its predecessor title the Weisfield – goes back to 1974. This year’s leader after the Sweetheart Sectional is 1975 and 1987 winner, Henry Lortz, who accumulated 33.56 points in the three events he played during that sectional – winning Saturday’s Open Pairs and the Sunday Flight A Board-A-Match Swiss teams. He accomplished this while playing in relatively unpracticed partnerships – but with strong players, and not employing his favorite big-club methods. Either the rest of the field has little chance when Wayne

and the Big Club return, or we are hopefully anticipating their return. Henry won the Saturday pair game, and was a teammate on Sunday with former Seattle unit member, Darryl Pedersen [the 1983 trophy winner] who now resides in Mill Creek and claims Everett Unit status – thus cannot challenge for the trophy; another possible element of the Lortz grand strategy :). Neil Ballard holds down second place after a consistently solid performance during the February competition. The following Seattle unit members comprise the leader list at the quarter-pole:

HospitalityHello from the Hospitality Chair!

First, thanks to all who contributed to our February Sweetheart Sectional. It was wonderful to see so many people chip in and help, with treats and time and ideas. Many thanks to Anita Longley, Elaine Vona, Mary Romeo, Sharon Erwin, Linda Kleinsasser, Kay Adams, Julie Godfrey, Linda & Don Mamula, Karen Dahners, Barbara Nist, Galen Hesson, Elizabeth & Hayyim Grossman and to all the others who contributed to make the Sweetheart such a great success!

We have two upcoming events: a 299er tournament on April 12-13 and our 4-day Knock-Out Sectional in May (23-26). We need your help to make these events the best they can be. If you bake, a batch of cookies or a cake are always welcome. Store-bought goodies are great, too! We always need clean plastic bags for the bridge tables. If you have an hour to spare, we can use you in the kitchen or setting up or taking down tables and chairs. There is always something to do, and more hands make for a much better time.

If you want to help, and have questions, call or email me at [email protected] or 425-641-5988.

See you at the tables.

MUGOn Sunday April 6 the game is at Eastside at 6 pm. On Sunday May 4, trying a two session swiss teams for a change, starting times of 1 pm and 6 pm. For those who have not tried it before, swiss teams take four people to play in it, two pairs. One plays NS and the other plays EW. This is a chance to try teams before our biggest sectional of the year over Memorial Day weekend at the Renton Community Center. Reservations as always encouraged for Seattle. 206 282 6414

We had the second annual Super bowl brunch potluck game in February at ESBC. Lots of food so you only left hungry if you wanted to. Everyone had a chance to get home in time to watch the game. We will be doing this again next year. Barbara Nist did a fantastic job with the food in March at Seattle. Also we had a special Pro/Am game in March at Seattle that was set up with much hard work from Shawn Abernethy and Patty McCallum.

Unit Round Robin Teams2007 & 2008 As referenced in the last edition of the SUN, the 2007 competitions concluded with the victories of the YARINGTON [Dick Yarington, Ken Scholes, John Schermer, Bill O’Brien, Kevin Bolan, and Leo Svarcs] and BAER [Dave Baer, Mike Hughes, Jen Chalfan, and Chris Moore] in brackets 1 & 2 respectively. Some of the hands from the bracket two final were included in that last issue. In the bracket one final, the Yarington squad was

convincingly the better team – producing a succession of winning actions throughout the match and avoiding any missteps. Both winning squads have now prevailed in their respective flight for each of the last two years. Congratulations to them, and lets see what we can do to improve the level of competition in 2008. Both to move toward that end, and to comply with the request of the bracket two winners, we are initiating the following modification to establishing the brackets for 2008. The winner of bracket two will be “promoted” to bracket one each year. Thus, whatever number of teams comprise this year’s bracket one, the BAER team will be one of that group. As in prior years, the brackets will be based on the average for each teams masterpoint total per player on the squads – with the highest x-1 number of teams plus the BAER team comprising the top bracket, and each ensuing bracket similarly determined by average masterpoint holding. While last year’s entry only allowed for two brackets, we hope to have as many as three for the 2008 competition. To familiarize those who may not previously have enjoyed this competition, the format is roughly as follows. Teams enter and are assigned an appropriate bracket. Each team plays a round-robin of matches against the other teams in its bracket. These matches are scored at IMPs converted to Victory Points, with the cumulative total determining the top four place-winners in each bracket; who then enter into semi-final and final playoff matches to determine each brackets final placings. The matches are played by mutual agreement of the teams involved, usually at a residence of one of the participants. Complete conditions of contest will be forthcoming for all teams entering this year’s event. Many thanks to Marci Knipschield, who has served as coordinator of this event for the past several years. She understandably has requested a reprieve from the demands for the time being. Her work is much appreciated, and we are glad that she will be continuing to compete in the event, and will call upon her for input and assistance. Board member Pat Dunn will serve as the coordinator for the 2008 competition. By the time you read this, all of last year’s teams should have been contacted regarding their participation for the upcoming year. Others interested can reach Pat as detailed below. Deadline for entries this year is April 20, 2008. “Regular Season matches” will be conducted between April 21 and October 15, 2008. Playoffs will be conducted between October 15 and December 20. Addendum from Dick Yarington:The editor asked me for some interesting hands from the RR final. After asking my teammates for some interesting hands all that we could remember was that Ken Scholes got to use a Multi 2 diamond bid and that John Schermer played a part score and made 5 more tricks than his counterpoint. We do remember that Ken Scholes provided the best wine of anyone on the team, some very enjoyable Oregon Pinots. If you want a good bridge hand I’ll give you this one which John Schermer played in the recent Vanderbilt in Detroit. It is worth noting that he outplayed the frequent national champion in his seat. The dummy was 10xxx, Kxxx, Qx, AQx and John the declarer held: AKJxx, Qxx, Ax, Kxx. A club was led against 4 spades. He won and cashed 2 high spades. Lho showed out on the 2nd round. John cashed the remaining clubs and exited with a trump. Rho returned a heart and John made the key play of playing the Queen. LHo won with the Ace and returned the Jack of diamonds. John ducked and won the Ace. He now cashed the King of hearts and exited with the Queen of diamonds. Rho won and had to return a diamond. His hand was Qxx, xx, Kxxxx, xxx.
