Nervous System Functions

Sensory input- gathering informationMonitor stimuli inside and outside the body

IntegrationProcess and interpret sensory input and decide

if action is needed

Motor outputResponse to integrated stimuliActivates muscles or glands

Nervous System Structural Classification

Central nervous system (CNS)BrainSpinal cord

Peripheral nervous system (PNS)Nerves outside the brain and spinal cord

Page 4: Unit 4 The Nervous System and - MR. CRAMER … · Unit 4 The Nervous System and Nervous Tissue. Nervous System Functions Sensory input- gathering information Monitor stimuli inside

Functional Classification of the PNS

Sensory (afferent) divisionNerve fibers carry information to the CNS

Motor (efferent) division Nerve fibers carry impulses away from the

CNS

Two subdivisionsSomatic nervous system = voluntary

Autonomic nervous system = involuntary

Organization of the Nervous System

Page 6: Unit 4 The Nervous System and - MR. CRAMER … · Unit 4 The Nervous System and Nervous Tissue. Nervous System Functions Sensory input- gathering information Monitor stimuli inside

Nervous Tissue: Support Cells (Neuroglia)

AstrocytesAbundant, star-shaped cellsBrace neuronsForm barrier between capillaries and neuronsControl chemical environment of

the brain

Nervous Tissue: Support Cells

MicrogliaSpider-like phagocytesDispose of debris

Ependymal cellsLine cavities of the

brain and spinal cordCirculate cerebrospinal

fluid

Nervous Tissue: Support Cells

OligodendrocytesProduce myelin sheath around nerve fibers in

the CNS

Page 9: Unit 4 The Nervous System and - MR. CRAMER … · Unit 4 The Nervous System and Nervous Tissue. Nervous System Functions Sensory input- gathering information Monitor stimuli inside

Nervous Tissue: Support Cells

Satellite cellsProtect neuron cell bodies

Schwann cellsForm myelin sheath in the PNS

Nervous Tissue: Neurons

Neurons = nerve cellsCells specialized to transmit messagesMajor regionsCell body- nucleus and metabolic center of the cell

Processes- fibers that extend from the cell body

Neuron Anatomy

Cell bodyNissl substance- specialized rough ERNeurofibrils- intermediate cytoskeleton that

maintains cell shapeNucleusLarge nucleolus

Neuron Anatomy

Extensions outside the cell bodyDendrites- conduct impulses toward cell bodyAxons- conduct impulses away from cell body

Page 13: Unit 4 The Nervous System and - MR. CRAMER … · Unit 4 The Nervous System and Nervous Tissue. Nervous System Functions Sensory input- gathering information Monitor stimuli inside

Axons and Nerve Impulses

Axons end in axonal terminals

Axonal terminals:Contain vesicles with neurotransmittersSeparated from next neuron by a gapSynaptic cleft- gap between adjacent neurons

Synapse- junction between nerves

Page 14: Unit 4 The Nervous System and - MR. CRAMER … · Unit 4 The Nervous System and Nervous Tissue. Nervous System Functions Sensory input- gathering information Monitor stimuli inside

Nerve Fiber Coverings

Myelin sheaths- jelly roll like

covering (schwann cells)

Nodes of Ranvier- gaps in

myelin sheath along the

axon

Neuron Cell Body Location

Most are found in the CNSGray matter- cell bodies and unmylenated

fibersNuclei- clusters of cell bodies within the white

matter of the CNS

Ganglia- collections of cell bodies outside

the CNS
