Skateboards: four wheels and a plank of wood yes? Well, not quite. Skateboards are actually very well made, and there are many different variations where brands have tried to improve skateboards in their own way, putting their mark on the skateboarding scene. Some well known brands are: Element, Enjoi, Almost, Jart, and Black Label. As with bmx’s you can buy a complete skateboard, or you can buy each part skateboard, or you can buy each part separately to make the skateboard that is best for you.

As with bmxing, skateboarding can be easy to learn, and hard to master. Or it can be hard to learn as well, it all depends on the person. When you have mastered skateboarding however, you’ll soon be skating like a pro, a little like in this video.

So you’ve learnt the basics of Skateboarding or bmxing, and now you want to take it one step further, you want to go to a skatepark. But which one? There are a lot of skateparks, and often they are geared towards a specific type of skating, street skating or vert skating being 2 examples. These next few pages will show you some of the best skateparks around Manchester.

Projekts, also known as ProjektsMCR is in the center of Manchester, and although it is a park you have to pay to skate, it is well worth the price, as it is one of the best places around, and the price is not dear. Bad news for bmxers though, this is a park for skateboards only

Stories are often told about skateboarding and bmxing, whether about great tricks, or big bails. Today we have Callum, and his story is definitely one of the latter.

My story is I was out with my friends on Platfields skate park, on a normal weekend before school and college started I had spent the whole day here as normal. The day was coming to an end when I tried one of my more difficult tricks called a tuck no hander so... I dropped in the ramp, flew over the fun box, put my bars in my lap, threw my hand in the air, then I put myself back into the normal riding position ready for the landing, as I came down my bike lent forward causing my front wheel to case the edge of the fun box, and caused my top half to go over the front of my bike face first into the hard marble. I blacked out instantly, my friends said at this point I tried to stand up but failed, when I woke up I was surrounded by friends as they asked me if I wanted an ambulance, I said yes then moments later, I blacked out.... I woke up yet again surrounded by paramedics and an blacked out.... I woke up yet again surrounded by paramedics and an ambulance, they asked me many questions, like, are you ok, where are you hurt, is there any pains in your neck, I told them I had a sharp pain in my neck and my face was sore, they put me in a neck brace and a stretcher and put me in the ambulance. I was rushed to hospital, when I got to hospital my mum and her boyfriend were waiting for me, my mum was shocked and my mum’s boyfriend took pictures to capture the moment. I was taken for an x-ray quickly, as they thought I had broken something in my back. It turns out I was lucky to walk away from my accident alive, and I didn’t even break a bone all I had was burns, cuts and bruises, a chipped tooth and a black eye. I was later discharged from hospital and went home... Later that week I had to go for a brain scan to check for any damage, it turned out I had minor brain damage and my bike survived in the end :D

My accident has not affected my ability to ride, I am not afraid of the skate park this has only made me more aware of what I am doing, I can still do the same tricks as I was doing before my accident, me and my friend Joe go on crown point north and fakie down the hill next to Tesco for a good laugh. The only thing I am afraid of is hitting my head really hard, which could cause me to get further brain damage or even death

Although it can be worrying to hear about stories like this, don’t let them put you off learning to ride. Accidents like this are very rare, and the positives of gaining a new skill far outweigh the negatives.far outweigh the negatives.
