Saltscape Project Introduction

What is the Saltscape Project? The Saltscape Project is a one point four million pound landscape partnership in which will run between 2015 and 2017, working with the community, public sector, voluntary organisations and the private sector to protect, enhance and restore the rich salt landscape of the Weaver Valley (Saltscape Project, 2015). The partnership is working to deliver thirty different projects as part of the scheme in order to reach three main goals of which were set at the very beginning (Saltscape Project, 2015). The three mains goals or “The Saltscape Vision” as it is referred to on its website are:

To protect, restore, enhance and manage this unique place (Saltscape environment) as one environment.

Reconnect people with their landscape and heritage. Make the area a better place to work, live and visit.

(Saltscape, 2015)From these three main goals, the scheme aims to deliver project in which cover four main project areas of which include:

SALT LEGACY – In which restores and protects the natural and built features of the landscape to help secure its future.

SALT PEOPLE – Engage the local community to ensure the long-term success of the project and help to support community groups by networking support.

SALT WAY – Making the Saltscape accessible to people by encouraging its uses by local people and visitors alike and by improving towpaths and walkways.

SALT SKILLS – Developing specialist skills within the community and continue to provide a wide range of exciting learning experiences.

(Saltscape Project, 2015)The scheme currently runs a number of different community projects in an effort to maintain and reach the goals it has set for itself, this ranges from Water Vole conservation in Frodsham to historic restoration at the Anderton Boat Lift to the geology of the Saltscape (Saltscape, 2015). In addition to the active work it does on the landscape, the work extends to providing family fun events, heritage training courses, volunteering opportunities, education workshops for schools, conservation trainee placements and grants for landowners (Saltscape, 2015).

The Saltscape project has been primarily set up and operated by Groundwork Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside. The local community charity works to help change places and lives in the areas of which it operates with a mainly environmental agenda (Groundwork Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, 2015).

Where is the Saltscape and what does it contain? The area in which is described, as the Saltscape environment is located in the heart of Cheshire and extends along the River Weaver from Frodsham in the north through the salt towns of Northwich & Middlewich and just finishes south of Winsford

(Saltscape, 2015). The area contains a number of “hotspots” of which most cluster around Northwich. These hotspots include:

WEAVER HALL MUSEUM & WORKHOUSE – A museum is now built into the former refuge for the poor in Mid-Cheshire, which used to house the Northwich Union Workhouse.

LION SALT WORKS MUSEUM – A restored historic open-pan salt producing site, showcasing the two thousand year history of salt in Cheshire.

ANDERTON BOAT LIFT – A local landmark of which has been transporting boats up and down the River Weaver and Trent & Mersey Canal since the eighteen seventies.

NORTHWICH COMMUNITY WOODLANDS – A three hundred and fifty acre site created from largely derelict land of which limewaste was once disposed of.

NORTHWICH TOWN CENTRE – A vibrant town centre standing in the centre of the Cheshire Plain and a designated conservation area in which a small number of ancient listed buildings remain.

(Saltscape Project, 2015)Many other local attractions of which have been maintained and or are monitored as part of the scheme are dotted up and down the River Weaver as well as in other places around the Saltscape environment (Saltscape, 2015).

OpinionThe Saltscape project has attracted quite significant interest from the community as well as internationally. It has featured quite prominently in local press and has been described as a “story to be told across the world” by a Japanese Professor visiting in 2015 (Northwich Guardian, 2015). Many of the partnerships landmark projects have featuring the local newspaper, the Northwich Guardian such as the opening of a new river link path between Northwich and Winsford (Northwich Guardian, 2015), ninety thousand pound restoration of the Anderton Boat Lifts toll booths (NorthwichGuardian, 2015) and the organisation of a local heritage day in Northwich (Northwich Guardian, 2015).

On Friday 16th October 2015, Sarah Perry from the Saltscape Project and Sean O’Hare (Mako Media) came in to pitch to me what they wanted as well as tell me more about the Saltscape Partnership. Both individuals presented a PowerPoint first explaining how the Saltscape Project was provided funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and how it was made up of a consortium of local business and organisations. Perry and O’Hare also went on to add that the Saltscape Project aimed to complete over thirty projects in the area of a three year period, first starting in two thousand and fourteen. Perry additionally mentioned how the project aimed to Protect, Enhance and Celebrate the post-industrial landscape shaped by salt. The presentation then went on to explain where the Saltscape is located and that the area is historically important and contains unique heritage both in the built and natural environments. (Walters, 2015) (Perry & O'Hare,2015).

Perry and O’Hare then moved on to explain what their aims were for the video and what they wanted and did not want. Perry primarily wanted a thirty-second video in which showed the Saltscape as an environment and how each of the different key locations is linked together. Both individuals clearly stated however that this advertisement is not to be about Saltscape as an organisation but as an environment

and that all effort should go into showcasing this. In addition to this, Perry and O’Hare also commented on a number of video specific aspects of which they may find interesting including the showcasing of sites not documented as well as, the possibility of using black and white photography and the changing of the script to make it more screen suitable. Perry also stated that the video should be for a wide audience and that it shouldn’t be limited in demographic. O’Hare additionally added that if I wanted to make any changes to the script, that it should then be quality checked by the client to ensure that they are happy for it to be produced. (Perry &O'Hare, 2015)

O’Hare who is managing mainly the technical aspects of the production also went on to show me a rough schedule in which he would like to see what progress as been made. This included a first rough edit review date in which he and Perry could watch what has already been filmed and make recommendations as well as loose

SUGGESTED TIMELINE FROM O’HARE & PERRY

Ideas Proposal: Thursday 22nd October Two weeks to film with an ideal end to principal photography being: 6th

November Three weeks to edit first draft of the video and to present it to O’Hare:

27th November Two and a half weeks to complete full edit: 16th December

timeframes for filming and editing to ensure that the product is made on time for the deadline. Walters who was also attending the presentation also highlighted the fact that due to the relatively large timeframe that additional aspects like original music could possibly added to create a very unique feel to the video.
