1. Read the Excerpt from “What to the Slave is the 4th of July” speech by Frederick Douglass on July 5, 1852. Highlight any words that stand out to you, key phrases, or important ideas that Douglass is presenting.

2. Write about 2-3 sentences at the bottom of the page summarizing it or sharing your thoughts on the reading.

3. Listen for Mrs. T to ask you to pause from reading to discuss it with a partner. If we all finish the first reading at around the same time, we will take a break to discuss it before moving on to the second reading.

FOR HOMEWORK: Read “Excerpt 12” on the back side. Again, highlight words or phrases that stand out to you. Write about 3-4 sentences reflecting on this. Summarize the reading and include your own thoughts and opinions. Does it give you any insight to Frederick Douglass.
