RESEARCHWHAT IS RESEARCH?

DEFINITION OF RESEARCH: RESEARCH IS THE INVESTIGATION OF A CERTAIN SUBJECT TO FIND OUT FACTS AND TO GAIN NEW KNOWLEDGE.

WHAT TYPES OF RESEARCH ARE THERE?

QUALITATIVE RESEARCH: QUALITATIVE RESEARCH PURPOSE IS TO LOOK INTO THE USERS ACTIONS. IT IS USED TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND WHY A PERSON WILL ACT THE WAY THEY DO DURING A INTERVIEW, FOCUS GROUP AND WHEN SOMEONE IS OBSERVING THEM. IF SOMETHING WAS A ‘QUALITATIVE SURVEY’ IT WILL BE OPINION BASED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS. THERE ARE NO RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWERS.

QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH: QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH CONTAINS NUMERICAL DATA. THESE DO NOT CONTAIN OPEN QUESTIONS BUT DO HAVE MULTIPLE CHOICE ANSWERS.

PRIMARY RESEARCH: PRIMARY RESEARCH IS FROM THE KNOWLEDGE YOU ALREADY KNOW. OR SOME WHICH YOU HAVE FOUND OUT AND PUT INTO YOUR OWN WORDS. THIS CAN REQUIRE CREATING SURVEYS, REVIEWS AND POSSIBLY INTERVIEWS AND THEN TO EVALUATE THE OUTCOME.

SECONDARY RESEARCH: SECONDARY RESEARCH IS WHEN YOU HAVE THE REQUIRED DATA OPEN. SUCH AS FINDING THE INFORMATION THAT YOU NEED IN NEWSPAPERS, REPORTS OR PUBLICATIONS. THIS DOESN’T REQUIRE YOUR OWN KNOWLEDGE OR CREATING SURVEYS OR QUESTIONNAIRES LIKE PRIMARY RESEARCH. YOU JUST HAVE TO LOOK FOR RESULTS THAT HAVE BEEN ALREADY DONE FOR YOU FROM REPORTS OR SOMETHING SIMILAR.

HOW DO WE USE RESEARCH?WE USE RESEARCH BY FINDING OUT AND USING INFORMATION

TO COMPLETE PROJECTS, SURVEYS, HOMEWORK, CLASS WORK, PUBLICATIONS AND REPORTS.

THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED BY USING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESEARCH SUCH AS QUANTITATIVE, QUALITATIVE, PRIMARY AND SECONDARY LIKE I HAVE MENTIONED IN THE PREVIOUS SLIDE.

WHEN USING RESEARCH WE HAVE TO CREATE A FILE CALLED A BIBLIOGRAPHY. BY DOING THIS WE CAN PREVENT COPYRIGHT WHEN USING RESEARCH FOUND ON THE INTERNET OR A TEXT BOOK. BY DOING THIS WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE CREDIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE’S WORK WHEN IT IS RIGHTFULLY THEIRS. BY USING RESEARCH LIKE THIS WE CAN PREVENT ANY PROBLEMS OR NEGATIVE DISCUSSIONS WHEN USING RESEARCH IN OUR WORK.

LIKE I HAVE MENTIONED IN THE PREVIOUS SLIDE, A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS A FILE WHERE YOU HAVE TO WRITE DOWN THE REFERENCE OF WHICH WEBSITE OR WHICH INFORMATION SOURCE YOU HAVE USED AND WHO COMPOSED IT SO YOU DO NOT TAKE CREDIT FOR ANOTHER PERSON’S WORK. THIS CAN PREVENT PLAGIARISM IN WORK THAT YOU HAVE COMPLETED WITHOUT CAUSING ANY NEGATIVE DISCUSSIONS AND NOT GETTING CREDIT FOR YOU OWN WORK.

YOU MUST MAKE SURE THE GOOD AND BAD FACTORS ARE BALANCED SO IT IS NOT BIAS. MAKING THE READER THINK THAT YOUR VIEWS AND INFORMATION IS NOT ONE SIDED.

I SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THE COMPUTER, USUALLY UP TO 4 HOURS ON FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE OR ON SKYPE WITH MY FRIENDS.

WHEN I AM NOT ON THE COMPUTER I AM EITHER LISTENING TO THE MUSIC ON MY IPOD OR READING A BOOK FROM MY BOOKSHELF OR A NEW BOOK I HAVE RECENTLY BOUGHT AT THE WEEKEND.

I LIKE WATCHING COOKING PROGRAMMES AND STAND-UP COMEDY PROGRAMMES LIKE MOCK THE WEEK.

SIMILARITIES, DIFFERENCES AND BOUNDARIES. I SAY THIS BECAUSE BOTH A TEXTBOOK AND THE INTERNET HAS A WIDE RANGE OF INFORMATION THAT YOU COULD USE.

ADVANTAGES OF THE INTERNET: YOU ARE ABLE TO ACCESS THE INTERNET ANYTIME AND ANY DAY, WEBSITES ARE CONSTANTLY INFORMED WITH NEW INFORMATION FROM THE PAST AND THE PRESENT, IT ALLOWS YOU TO SEE NEWSPAPERS, WORD DOCUMENTS AND QUOTES OR INFORMATION FROM BOOKS WHICH YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO FIND IN THE LIBRARY.

DISADVANTAGES OF THE INTERNET: IT DOES NOT PROVIDE THE HELP TO FIND RESOURCES WHICH A LIBRARIAN WOULD HELP YOU WITH, THERE COULD BE UNWANTED INFORMATION ON A WEBSITE AND IT COULD BE HARD EXTRACTING THE RIGHT INFORMATION, THE INFORMATION CAN NOT ALWAYS BE RELIABLE, THERE IS A CHANCE THAT YOU CAN RECEIVE A VIRUS ONTO YOUR COMPUTER FROM CLICKING ON A WEBSITE IN THE PROCESS WHEN YOU ARE DOING YOUR RESEARCH.

ADVANTAGES OF A TEXTBOOK/LIBRARY: YOU ARE ABLE TO FIND NEWSPAPERS, DOCUMENTS AND REPORTS FROM THE PAST AND PRESENT, A LIBRARIAN IS THERE TO HELP YOU FIND RESOURCES WHICH YOU MAY NEED, THERE IS A WIDE RANGE OF INFORMATION YOU COULD LOOK AT.

DISADVANTAGES OF A TEXTBOOK/LIBRARY: ACCESS TO THE LIBRARY IS LIMITED AND ONLY OPEN AT CERTAIN TIMES AND DAYS

SOCIAL NETWORKING

THERE IS YET ANOTHER WAY PEOPLE CAN FIND OUT INFORMATION WHILST CONSTRUCTING A FILM. FOR EXAMPLE, SOCIAL NETWORKS SUCH AS FACEBOOK, TWITTER AND YOUTUBE. FIRSTLY, FACEBOOK CAN BE USED TO POST A QUESTION ASKING ALL THE FRIENDS THAT THEY HAVE TO GIVE THEM FEEDBACK OR YOU COULD MAKE A GROUP WITH THE DESCRIPTION OR THOUGHTS FOR YOUR FILM AND PEOPLE CAN “LIKE” IT TO CONVEY IF IT’S A GOOD IDEA. SIMILAR TO TWITTER, WHEN YOU “TWEET” A POST PEOPLE CAN EITHER COMMENT THEIR IDEAS AND OPINIONS OR “RETWEET” THE POST WHICH CAN BE EQUIVALENT TO LIKING A POST ON FACEBOOK. LASTLY, FOR YOUTUBE YOU CAN POST A VIDEO POSSIBLY SAYING YOUR IDEAS AND POSSIBLE DECISIONS YOU WILL MAKE IN YOUR FILM. THEN OTHER USERS CAN POST A COMMENT PRAISING OR CRITICISING. OR GIVING YOU FEEDBACK TO IMPROVE YOUR FILM. THEY CAN ALSO “LIKE” OR “FAVOURITE” YOUR VIDEO TO DISPLAY THEIR POSITIVE RESPONSE OR “DISLIKE” YOUR VIDEO TO CONVEY THEIR NEGATIVE FEEDBACK. MOREOVER, YOU CAN SEARCH TRAILERS OF THE SIMILAR GENRES THAT YOU WISH TO PICK FOR YOUR FILM AND YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH AND WHAT KIND OF RESPONSE THE VIEWING AUDIENCE HAD.

MY EXPERIENCE USING THE DIFFERENT METHODS

I HAVE HAD A NEW EXPERIENCE IN USING ALL THESE DIFFERENT RESEARCH METHODS. BY USING PRIMARY RESEARCH, I FOUND IT QUITE EASY. BY HAVING TO CREATE SURVEYS AND QUESTIONNAIRES THEN FINDING VARIOUS NUMBERS OF PEOPLE TO ASK TO GET ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS. EITHER HAVING QUALITATIVE OR QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH I WAS ABLE TO GAIN USEFUL AND A GREAT DEAL OF INFORMATION TO DETERMINE IDEAS FOR THE FILM I WISH TO CREATE. ON THE OTHER HAND, I FOUND SECONDARY RESEARCH NOT AS EASY AS PRIMARY. MY REASONS BEING, BY HAVING TO USE BOOK RESEARCH AND INTERNET RESEARCH TO CONDUCT SECONDARY RESEARCH. WITH INTERNET THERE IS ALWAYS SOME UNWANTED INFORMATION SO ITS HARD TO FIND WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR OR THE RESEARCH YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS NOT LISTED. BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS RELY ON THE OTHER TYPE OF SECONDARY RESEARCH: BOOK RESEARCH. TO CONCLUDE, PRIMARY RESEARCH IS MORE FUNCTIONAL BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO GET INSTANT AND ACCURATE INFORMATION. WHEN SECONDARY WAS TIME CONSUMING WHEN I WAS LOOKING FOR THE INFORMATION WHICH I NEEDED.
