READ ABOUT ITRead this biography. Think about your guesses while you read.

Ray CharlesI was born with music inside me.

They called him "The Genius""the only genius in the

[music] business, according to singer Frank Sinatra. That made hima genius is the original way in which he combined the diverse1

genres2 of jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel, and country. He

broke down the walls that had always existed between musical

    genres, creating groundbreaking

    3

music that has had a hugeinfluence on the course of rock and pop. It has been said that his

music can "break your heart or make you dance." His name wasRay Charles, and he was known as "the father of soul."

Ray Charles was born in 1930, into a poor family in the

southeastern United States. At age five, he gradually began to

    lose his vision4

and was totallyblind by age seven.

Charles had shown an interest in music since the age of

three. At seven, he left home to attend the Florida School for

the Deaf and Blind. There he learned to read, write, and arrange

music in Braille5 and play the piano, organ, saxophone, clarinet,

and trumpet. While he was at the school, his mother died. At

fifteen, he left school and began working as a traveling jazz

musician in Florida, and later in Washington state.

In 1950, Charles moved to Los Angeles, where he found

his own unique sound. He combined jazz and blues with gospel6

music to create his first big hit recording, "I Got a Woman." On"I Got a Woman," Charles began to sing in a more emotional,

intense, and exciting voice. He later said, "When I started to sing

like myself ... when I started singing like Ray Charles, it had this

spiritual and churchy, this religious or gospel sound." This recording

made him famous and marked the beginning of a new musical

    genre, "soul.7

Throughout his life, Charles continued to write and

perform. He also made television and movie appearances. Hisparticipation in the 1985 release of "We Are the World" broughta renewed interest in his work.

influences on popular music. His passionate singing and intelligent

combining of different musical genres is the ideal that manymusicians continue to measuretheir work by.

Ray Charles died on June 10, 2004, at the age of 73. A

notorious ladies man, he is survived by 12 children, 18

grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. He was quite humble8 In

1983 he said, "Music's been around a long time, and there's

    Tears in Heaven

The Eric Clapton song "Tears in Heaven" is a tributeto Conor

    Clapton, Eric's pre-school son. On 20 March 1991 at 11 a.m., four-and-a-half-year-old Conor Clapton died when he fell from a 53rd-

storywindow in a New York City apartment. He landed onthe roofof

    an adjacentfour story building.

The death of his son had a deep impacton Eric Clapton. Fornine months the grieving father concentrated on coming to terms

with his loss rather than on performing. When he returned to the

stage, his music had changed, becoming softer, more powerful, and

more reflective. "Tears in Heaven" was Clapton's way of pouringhis

griefand growing acceptance of Conor's loss into his music. At the

1993 Grammy Awards, Clapton's recording of "Tears in Heaven" won

the award for Best Pop Vocal Performance (Male Category).

    Would you know my name

if I saw you in heaven?

    Would you feel the same

if I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong and carry on

    'Cause I know I don't belong

    here in heaven...

    Would you hold my hand

if I saw you in heaven?

    Would you help me stand

if I saw you in heaven?I'll find my way through night and day

    'Cause I know I just can't stay

    here in heaven...

    Time can bring you down,

    Time can bend your knees

    Time can break your heart,

    have you begging please...

    begging please...

    Beyond the door

    there's peace I'm sure

And I know there'll be no more

tears in heaven...Would you know my name
